    What's the best version of Linux?

    Gentoo is very nice. www.gentoo.org However, it definitely isn't a "beginner" distrobution. If you want something for your first distro, I would recommend Fedora, Mandrake, or Suse. Lindows is also a nice "newbie" distro.
