What's the best version of Linux?

Well I don't know if it is the best distro, but I just got Suse 9.1 . Just installed it today, and so far it has gone pretty smoothly. Still have XP on my C drive, and Suse is on a partition on my slave drive.

I believe most installs have a boot loader so you can choose which OS you want to load.

My advice, try downloading the LiveCD demo from http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/index.html. You can try out Linux without having to install any software -- it all runs right from the CD.

I'm sure someone else can give you more info on which is the best distro though-this is my first experience with Linux, but so far, this has been a positive experience.

It's a trial and error process. However, considering your question maybe something like Mandrake Linux would be a good place to start. If you have a broadband connection and a CD burner maybe Knoppix would be a good thing to try. It is a version of Linux that can be run off a CD for people that want to try it, but not have to re-partition their hard drive. I've yet to try it myself, because I'm a Gnome, not KDE guy myself.

Try different distros and see which works for you. Just remember Linux is not for the weak. It is not ready for your grandma. It is a very good operating system, and the challenge of learning it is rewarding.

P.S. -- Seeing as how you are starting out and might not have a broadband connection. This website is a good place to grab distros for cheap.

However, you pretty much have to know what you want before hand.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the tips guys. I'm currently downloading a few distributions and try each of them out. Yes, I am aware that have alot of things to learn but I'm just so tired of Windows I might as well try something new.

I hear very good things about Gentoo. It has a port system similar to FreeBSD which I recommend over ANY linux distro.

FreeBSD is much better than linux on many fronts.

Gentoo is very nice. www.gentoo.org

However, it definitely isn't a "beginner" distrobution. If you want something for your first distro, I would recommend Fedora, Mandrake, or Suse. Lindows is also a nice "newbie" distro.

I'd say stay away from any RedHat distributions. I ran RedHat 9.0 and had nothing but problems. I recently toyed with RedHat Fedora Core 2, which I also had continuous issues with. Mandrake I have found to be pleasant and have heard good things about SuSe. The best that I have played with is Debian, but that's just ridiculously difficult to install...

Well if you are a noob and feel that you dont want to go that far with linux other than to fool around then mandrake is good..and debian as well. I hear better comments about debian though.

And yes..stay away from RH.

Ok, I've started downloading Mandrake right now. I'll probably test it out on an extra computer after work tomorrow.

What's the issue with Red Hat though? It seems at least be the most famous version of Linux.
For those using Linux what is the best version to get? Also any transition tips would be nice.
There's really no ultimate version of Linux. If you're a newbie, I can recommend Mandrake, it's sweet.

EDIT: (reads one post above...) Oh! Hmm. I'm just being a dumbass today!
