if all he wants to do is play movies, just look for one w/ internet connectivity so you can get firmware updates easy. and one that has HDMI 1.3 & outputs all the new audio formats. if you care about upscaling DVDs, besides a HTPC a PS3 does it the best.

well i installed orange box w/ the dvds. but when i formatted & reinstalled steam a year later, i couldnt find my discs, so just clicked on TF2 and it downloaded & installed it. so probably yes.
