If you end up picking it up check for the dlc characters. Last I checked (a long while ago) the characters were free but I remember it being mentioned that at some point they wouldn't be. No idea about this deadline.

Not sure. I think the destiny reddit page has some guides dealing with drops and tricks. I got to lv24 by doing the crucible with bounties and buying something from the vender with the bullhorns once my crucible reputation hit lv2.
