Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

If you have guides to trade or request please post here as well and of course any video game magazine deals you may find from any store.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

i got you man. i have an extra without a doubt. id like to do this trade.
cool, works for me, thanks.
I had a lame penny guide experience yesterday at a EB store, my 2nd one ever, and 1st at the store. While purchasing 3 preowned games, I thought what the hey, and I picked up a Full Spectrum Warrior Guide, since I own the game and I was going to pick it up for a penny. The cashier scans it, and the lcd screen showed sure enough it was .01. When I leave the store, I notice that the receipt total price showed $35.xx instead of $20.xx.

The guide for Full Spectrum Warrior - FULL SPEC WAR HB - was $14.99, she tried to sneak in the price on my card, but when I saw the balance on my card left over was $0.69, instead of like $16. I ran back in the store, and had to refund it.. But instead of it going back to my Edge Card, she put it on a Custom Gift Card. Total extra time was 10 minutes for me going back into the store, waiting in line, and signing the receipt.
I've had similar things happen to me with penny guides at several EB Games stores before. My local EB's dont seem to be some of the penny guide friendly. Bastards.
I have an extra Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for trade if anybody is interested.
Ooh, I am! Hehe. :D

Please, check my list.
If anyone has an extra Ninja Gaiden Guide, I am interested in it as well.
I have a couple of Ninja Gaiden guides. What do you have?

Just picked up quite a few guides at my local gamestore...looking to trade for a few...here's what I have

RPG Maker II
Zelda: Four Swords (Nintendo)
Crimson Skies
Unreal II: The Awakening
ESPN NFL 2K5
Socom II
Manhunt

Looking for several different guides...PM me if interested and I'll try and think of some that I need.I also have several older guides in my basement...I can't remember them all, but I know I have a few counterstrikes, a few Sonic Advance 2, and a smattering of others as well.

yes, you are correct, my apologies...I will however add the following to the gamestop list...

.hack 3: Outbreak is pennied out...that isn't on the master list, but it rings up for .01...so hopefully I've done my part...

I picked up some guides at BB the last couple of days... so these guides are pennied out. BUT why do the stores need to "destroy" them? I don't get what the purpose is. The stores are just clearing inventory to make way for new guides coming in but why not just sell them to the customers instead of destroying them?

I've had mixed experiences so far. Some stores let me buy them but others refused to and said they had to return them back to the manufacturer... just confused about the whole "destroying" aspect.
Not to be off-topic or anything, but isn't this a penny guide thread, not a trading thread...
I agree, better to set up a tradelist and mention it in a legit post.

Like, see my tradelist, really I have a ton of guides:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=715136#715136

BTW, the publishers may be demanding that the stores destroy the old stock . . . that may explain how streaky the penny guides are.

They should have the stores send back the cover page for credit like the paperbook and magazine industries have done. That way the stores could give away the coverless guides without them ending up one ebay, etc . . .

I wouldn't mind coverless guides.

Hehe, answered 5 million times, here is 5 million and 1:

The stores have agreements with the publishers that if the guides don't sell they will get credit for them if they return them. In reality though, the publisher doesn't need the guide back which hasn't sold anyway...so it's easier and cheaper to just destroy it and save the money it would cost to ship. At that point the publisher would prefer the guides destroyed rather than given away for free...why exactly? There are arguments back and forth but basically A) it hurts the perceived value of an originally $15 game guide for it to be sold for a penny, and B) if more and more people know they are going to get 1 cent guides they are less likely to pay $15 when it will be dropped in a number of months. People tend to argue about the last one, some say they never would have bought the guides in the first place....but if I am going to be honest, I probably would have eventually bought guides for Pikmin 2 and Paper Mario 2 if I didn't know they would have dropped.

So basically that's why they do it. On one hand it's silly to destroy perfectly good stuff. On the other, it discourages people expecting to get guides from 1 cent and not paying full price. Sort of a weird analogy but you ever go to a resturaunt or get delivery and there's a problem with the order... they fix it but they take away what they originally brought you....you know they're going to toss it but I figure they do it to discourange anyone who would purposely do something to get it free. I used to order from this Pizza place in college, they delivered us a plain pizza instead of our toppings, when they came with our corrections they took the plain back which we definately would have dogged anyway...they basically explained that they weren't accusing us of it but sometimes people would straight up lie about what they ordered over the phone to get extra food...so their policy was to take back the "incorrect" orders and toss them....weird analogy but similar in that they didn't want people getting free shit.

So I don't blame any stores who refuse me, but that doesn't stop me from trying because I sure as shit love 1 cent guides.

I hate BB even more now. I went a couple days ago to my BB and saw that they had most of the guides on the list. So I took a couple of each and made sure to leave about 1-3 of each for someone else. I just got one for me, one for my bro, and one for my friend who picked up some guides for me from another store. I come up to the front of the store, everything going good, I'm getting rung up at the cashier and she rings up most of the guides and then suddenly phones the up one of the managers. I ask her what's wrong since the computer of the transaction was going smoothly. Suddenly some idiot comes out of no where and starts to tell me that it is just a glitch in the system and that they are unable to sell them to me. I tell them that this is not the first time/glitch that has happened and that I have picked up some guides in the past. he tells me that I should have been allowed. So then I tell him what about the little tag/signs that you have back in the guide section. HE suddenly looks puzzled and tells me to show him. O.K., I go back and show about 3-4 of the tag/sign things. He grabs them up and makes sure to see which of the guides are the ones ringing up for .01 and takes me back to the front. Now alll of a sudden he tells me that, O.K. alright I'll sell you one guide of each one that I took. I said, O.K. so now it's o.k. for you to sell them to me, then where does it say that there is a limit on them in your policies. He says look bro, I'm trying to be cool here but that's just the policy. he says, "their are plenty of policies that we don't have up". I say then that is illegal. To me what you just said sounds like you just made it up on the spot. He tells me that we do it because we want to spread the wealth among our customers and that we hate the resellers/hoarders/ebayers/ etc. I say look man, I'm not taking everyone of them, you still have like 2-3 of each in the back. he says that he will allow me to buy just one set today and then as many of them that were left tomorrow. I wasn't going to buy everyone if I did come back, but I still wanted an extra. So, at that point I"m really starting to blow up at this BB. All this BS that they keep telling and giving me the run around. Saying that they have to send them back. the worst part of all of this experience is that I ordered some of the guides previously for in-store pickup and they wouldn't let me take them. I get all pissed at them and later come back with my friend and we got the guides. But the story doesn't end here, just to show them off and see if I could get another couple of the ones I wanted, like they said that they would give me, I went back yesterday and tried to find the guides. Somehow, they all nearly magically disappeeared. I say to myself, if they weren't letting me take a couple extra then how did most of the go away. SO I ask one of the floor men to see if they have any of the guides left in the computer. turns out that they still have 4 of each in the back. he goes to the back and grabs me the whole cart and says just take which ones you want, it's all cool. I do that go up to the front and then suddenly out of nowhere the manager from the other day shows up and says that I'm now not alowed to buy any of the guides that THEY said I could the other day. I'm a big scene about it, show the other customers the true side of BB, you know, telling them that if I bought a bunch of items that were 1000 or more they wouldn't care but for these they do. So anyway he eventually gives me a couple of the ones I want but takes most of them away. Worst BB in town I say. I have never had problems getting guides ever from the other stores.

For the Vegas CAGs that care, it was at the Marks Street Store next to the Galleria Mall. They still have plenty of guides so don't worry, unless they destroyed them or the employees bought them themselves. The only guide that they won't have is the Pikmin 2 guide whcih I picked up the last one.

I hate BB is all I can say. The hassle of going there and finding what I want if they have it isn't worth it anymore. I'd probably get a better deal and better customer support/relations if I went to Fry's or CC.

That manager is a dick. I've never ran into any problems like that yet, only one nervous lady at TRU who said they would get fired if they sold penny guides but the manager okayed it. She still looked nervous as hell selling me them though.

If anyone has an extra Ninja Gaiden Guide, I am interested in it as well.
I have a couple of Ninja Gaiden guides. What do you have?
I have copies of all of the recent markdowns from BB + Splinter Cell: PT, Mario Part 5 [from TRU]. Contact/PM me if we can work something out.

Sorry for the post, I'm still getting use to the forums here.

Scored all the guides from the recent Best Buy drops, no problem today. The cashier was really puzzled by it all but scratched his head, looked at the screen a few times, hit a few buttons then told me, "Forty cents please."

The only one I wasn't able to find was X-men Legends...no where to be found. There are lots of guides from the other drops still in there too like Star Wars Battlefront and a few others.

Does anyone have a Fire Emblem or Star Ocean 3 guide? I have Kingdom Hearts, X-men Legends, Mech Assault 2, and DBZ Budokai 3. I might be able to get some others if there is interest.

Be thankful you got some at least. The BB at Pasadena, CA just went ahead and junked all the penny guides. They would rather do that then toss some bones to the Devil Customers.

Hey, I'm very extremely grateful. I just sick and tired of all of this BS at BB and in particular this store that I went to. It's not the first time that I have picked up .01 cent guides from them. I have come to the conclusion that this is just the worst store in town.

I actually had a good trip when I picked mine up Monday. Got few extras of each that they had extras of, and went to the front. The guy checking me out was kinda surprised but thought it was funny. He came to the DBZ guide, which they only had one of, and says "oohh, did we have any more of these???". I told him "No, but go ahead & take that one." He didn't want to at first, but I explained to him that I was mainly picking that one up to trade anyway - I have no interest in DBZ. So he took it & thanked me.

The EB guys around here are really good about it, I usually make a crack about how I'm just helping them with their job, and they laugh & agree. I guess it helps that I frequent the EBs tho, and actually spend money there (and yes, buy guides at full price when it's something I really want), so they know I'm not just coming in for the freebies.

BTW, check my list for the guides I have for trade - I'm attempting to get guides for every PS2 game I own that has one, so if I don't have it I'm interested. :)

You need to take your business elsewhere.

When they see they can't even sell penny guides then maybe they'll try to figure out why people aren't shopping there anymore.

It's a cycle here on CAG. I've been burned sooooo many times by other CAGs who wipe stores clean of any deals without thinking of their fellow CAG, that I simply had no hesitation in buying every last bloody one of anything I felt was worthwhile. Up until just today I used to be nice and only pick up 2 or 3 at most of anything, but every other CAG out there seems to be overly greedy so my hand has been forced and I had no choice other than to follow by example. Even with all that said, I still showed plenty of restraint and left a shitload of Spyro guides, all of the Xmen Legends guides, and even two of the three highly sought after Paper Mario guides. More magnanimous than was necessary by me. Calm down.

FWIW, I'd almost be willing to help you out should your BB order fall through.
Just curious, how do you know it's a CAG that's grabbing all the guides in your area, and not just some random greedy person? And please, don't let the hoarder types bring you down to their level. Just be happy when you're lucky enough to score some nearly free stuff, and don't worry about it when you don't. IMO, it's not really worth getting upset about. It's not as if we're entitled to a fair share of free guides.

As for my expedition today, I only hit the BB in Suprise, AZ. Picked up a Spyro and an NFL Street 2, but that was it. The only cheap guide still there when I left was one copy of NFL Street 2. Even the full price guides were pretty sparse (except for a ton of Fable). I asked an employee if they had any Paper Mario guides, and she said they were sent back to the publisher. Um...okay. My guess is they were probably sold out prior to the penny drop.

Are you sure i scored at 4 guides @ pasadena yesterday and they still had a couple left of the good guides and plenty of the Spyros and Paper Mario.

All they had in Dearborn, MI BB was the. 27 Paper Mario guides.....which i already bought at full price. Oh well. I did get an Onimusha 3 guide from there for .01 a few months ago.

That's a good Avatar you have there.

I'm looking for the BB guides I missed: Killzone,MechAssault 2, X-Men Legends and possibly Paper Mario. I went to two BB's and found nothing. I will buy or trade. I have all of the recent penny guides from TRU. PM me if you can help. TIA

East Lansing had

4 NFL Street 2

and I foudn 1 stashed Paper Mario.

I bought 2 NFL Street 2 and the only Paper Mario.

I am a few days late so most likely another CAG or BB employee beat me.

This was back in late Jan or early Feb. Maybe whoever was in charge later decided not to junk then when questions were being asked.

Indeed it should. Since scorch claims the mods always listen to him when he calls for stuff to be locked, maybe we should get him in here to call for this to be stickied.

Not sure if this has been posted..

GameCrazy received a memo Wednesday to destroy several old guides, such as Silent Hill 3, Hulk, etc.. and the most recent ones being Thug 2 and Spiderman 2. However, there is one that's on the list that was pennied out that makes it worth the trip.. the Onimusha 3 Limited Edition guide is now a penny. GC ordered them to be destroyed by Saturday morning, so if you want it, i'd check a local GC tonight.

Checked the Biloxi TRU, was suprised to have found the S Mario 3 guide in stock, and fire Emblem guides, picked up a few other items as well, the cashier there had no trouble selling them to me for a penny each (as opposed to the Mobile TRU where they took ALL the guides I had and would not sell them (it was about 6 or 7)

Made out really well at a local GS that night, digging around spotted a RE4 guide for 1.99, always love looking through GS used guides, got MGS3 last week for 1.99 as well

Gamestop can be really cool for PO guides . . . I found a RE4 (beat up but $2) . . . now I need a cheapass copy of the game  . I also got a $2 GTA SA (which I've picked back up . . . so it's handy).

Yes I agree. MGS3, Jak 3, and GTA: SA are the ones that I really want also. Other than MGS3 and Jak 3 most of these will probably stay up in price if I had to say since GTA: SA probably won't see a price drop any time soon and neither will Halo 2. I remember that for the first two GTAs it took them a year and half if not more till they were 19.99 so probably their guides will stay up.

I managed to pick up the following that I would be interested in trading

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3
NFL Street 2
Mario Party 5
Medal of Honor Rising Sun
NCAA 2005
NBA 2K5
Crash Twinsanity

I'm looking for the following

Mario and Luigi
Golden Sun/Golden Sun: Lost Age
Hot Shots Golf Fore

Thanks!

Picked up Mech Assault and NFL street 2 at the best buy in shreveport LA. They were even given their own shelf space and a sign pointing out that they were 1 cent, which is a first for me
