CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
K sry but i really dont want to read this whole 72 pages to find an answer, and search doesnt really help me. Where in most stores are the .01 guides? I havent found any. And a 2nd question, are they usually marked at .01 or do they just ring up at .01?
They are usually located in the Videogame Department and some have seen them in the PC section if they haven't pulled them off the shelves. As for pricing, if they are still on the shelf, it varies store to store. Some have the last full price $9.99-$16.99, while few will actually mark them at the $.01. If you see a $.01 guide from the list in store you will usually have to have it scanned. Depending on the store you will either luck out and be given the oppurtunity to purchase or be told that the guide can not be sold.

(1) Read the top parts of page 1

(2) Write down (print out) some of the guides listed on page 1 and their associated store.. e.g. GS/EB, BB, etc...

(3) use maps.google.com to locate stores around and plan your hunting trip.

(4) No, penny guides are almost never tagged as $0.01, unless you found a gold mine store that loves to give things out for free... that's why you need to KNOW which one are pennied!

(5) When you found penny guide, bring it up to cashier then... either:
(a) if you are at GS/EB and you are not a sexy female or a giant, then you need to buy decoy games, I usually get around $10-$15 USED games per guide... (USED games can be returned for full refund at EB/GS within 7 days)
(b) if you are at BB, chose your cashier carefully, dont go for experienced/manager type, nor complete newbie... if you have one or more guides in hand, give them just one and say very clearly: "Could you please scan this to see if it is ALSO on CLEARANCE? Thank you." This method, IMO, helps prepare the mind of the cashier so that when the $0.01 price ringings up, they wont be so shocked as to call over a manager...

At the end of the day, rather you find penny guide depends primarily on your luck, but as your skill improves, so does your luck :)

Have fun, make sure you fill up your car before you start your hunting trip.

Best of luck matey.

For the first time in 10 years, I actually paid full price for a guide today. Decided I am going to buy the Disgaea 2 guide now rather than frantically trying to hunt down the guide in a couple months. Given how scarce the DJ guides are around here, I'm guessing I won't regret it.

In other news, I found a few guides that I now have up for trade.
Metroid Prime Hunters
X-Men The Official Game
Star Wars Battlefront II

Lastly, for anyone in the San Diego area, the Mission Valley Best Buy still has a bunch of the X-Men and a couple of the SWBFII guide.

I've actually found that that being upfront about it seems to work pretty well, especially with a cashier that's likely a "non-gamer" demographic (i.e. avoid the teenage/20 something male). When it rings up a penny, I just say non-chalantly that the store pennies out the old guides to get rid of them to make shelf room for the new ones (which is true). That plus the fact it rings up for a penny is usually enough to get them to do the transaction. Actually, I don't think I've ever been turned down for a penny guide at Best Buy, it's TRU that sometimes will turn you down.

has anyone tried price-checking old strategy guides they find at bookstore chains like waldenbooks, borders, barnes & noble, etc? is it their policy to penny-out guides, or does that happen only at electronics/videogame/department stores?

would like a definite yes/no answer from somebody who knows, rather than "i think probably," please. :p

I have been told by a gamestop manager that EB/Gamestop and Waldenbooks are the same company so the pennyguides should be the same. However that was a while ago, so things could have changed. You could always take it up to the register and have them pricecheck it for you.

I've asked my local Walden, B&N, and Borders. None of them penny out guides and look at me like I'm crazy when I ask. Checked at 3 diff stores for each company.

Yeah, they don't. What you'll notice between bookstores and gamestores is that book stores have a massive shelf to put all this crap, and they don't get very many copies of each. So there's no need for them to clear out space. I found a bunch of N64 guides, and Eternal Darkness last time I was looking at a B&N, all full price.

okay thanks, guys. i saw some old guides in a bookstore recently, but it was just before closing time and i wasn't able to do any price-checking, so i wanted to know if it'd be worth driving to the other end of town again. gasoline is expensive these days (more than $3 per gallon in california!).

Found some guides yesterday. They have been added to my tradelist. Have new TC AWF, Metroid Prime Hunters, the Xmen, and Sims 2 (a bit worn). I'd like to trade for guides I don't have. If you're really interested on a purchase, please try to buy more than one if you really want to purchase.

Feel free to CML of guides for your Advanced Warfighter guide. Thanks!
I always thought EB/GS was part of Barnes & Nobles, but Waldenbooks are part of Borders.
This is correct. I do inventories at both Barnes & Noble & Borders/Waldenbooks and I've confirmed this info with managers of both. In fact most Waldenbooks will be converting to a Borders Express in the near future.
my local BB is really $uck. They pulled off all the penny guides and dump all off them away :(
Sounds like it's dumpster-diving time.

OK, it's official, Best Buy is now the WORST place to try to grab pennied guides from. My local two stores were cleaned out of guides, I ran into employees at both stores who said they pulled the guides, so that eliminated another CAG beating me to at least one copy of each new penny guide again.

And, I got a beligerent employee in the Wilkes Barre store, who told me point blank that 'they finally read their policy, etc, etc, etc'. She proceeded to drone on about how 'no one will find a penny guide ever again' on their shelves.

Anyway, I had the one employee check for a few of the pennied guides online, as GRAW was available through the site earlier in the evening, but UNavailable(sold out) when I got to the Wilkes Barre store.

I tried to arrange 'store pickup' of SW BF II for 3 copies of the guide(which was already listed as backordered when I was there) but that same employee said I could 'only have it shipped to my address' since they had none in stock.

See, I always thought that store pickup copies came from OTHER stores, if the store you chose for pickup had none in stock, so I figured I could still do that option.

Anyway, thats not the BEST part of this whole tale. The BEST part is the shipping cost for 3 paltry copies of BF II. A whopping $14.97, which comes out to $5.00 a guide roughly. WHAT A LOAD!!!

I told the lady(beligerent one) that at THAT price, it would negate any decent savings. Basically, without saying it, I told her to stick those guides.

Anyway, if everyone hurries, you may be able to snag a couple copies for pick up near you from the site.

Half Life 2 Episode One guide with a nominal shipping charge, It's a reg priced guide, at $19.99($2.49 shipping charge)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17005&type=page&_requestid=144421
Star Wars Battlefront II guide with a double shipping charge versus the Half Life 2 guide listed above($4.99 shipping):
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17005&type=page&_requestid=148375
Shipping is charged PER item, btw people. It makes you wonder though, why a copy of SWBF II's guide is charged twice the shipping, when its about half the thickness of HL 2's guide.

Peculiar or not?? Opinions?

Possibly something they do in order to deter people from ordering guides that get dropped to $.01 before they can manage to remove them from their website? God knows how their system works.

It's too funny though, as many CAGs did that last time, ordered guides that had pennied out for in store pick up via a web order at their local store.

I was going to try that but my local two are listing neither in stock, so I would be SOL.

But did it work? I ordered in store pickup and they cancelled the order.
I went to the store myself and picked them off the shelf(or the cart they pulled them onto in a halfassed attempt to pull guides).
Then i was offered free shipping to get the guides from the warehouse and that was cancelled as well.

Wow... I guess people really struck out on Best Buy :(

I still need a Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, if anyone can help me out!

My BB had multiple copies of Socom 3 and on copy of Call of Duty 2 on the shelves, but none of the newer ones. Anyone who wants a Socom 3, its available for trade, still sealed.
Another BB has Auto Assault on the shelves.

Got a couple copies of the X-men offical game of the moive guide...

I just went to grab one of those Tekken 5 UCE joystick w/game :bouncy: , now I want the Tekken 5 guide... anyone interested please CML for possible trades.

Thanks!

Why would you need six copies of a guide for a game that sucked? I'm confused. Wouldn't one be enough?

Love that Zidane clip!

Why does it matter that he picked up 6 copies though.

I would imagine that he could trade for guides he doesn't have. I don't see the issue.

CompUSA recently clearanced out some guides as part of it's inventory blowout. The only one that's really any good is Final Fantasy X for $4.98. This is still full price everywhere else, correct?

I guess lol...

The thing is, the X-men the movie guide might not even be worth a penny!:applause:

The only stores(when I checked BB's site) that listed any of the guides available within an hour or so's drive from me were: Kingston, NY and State College, PA.

Just a heads up for those who may live close to either of those and want to grab a copy of the SW BF II guide, since that was the only one I checked for availability.

BB.com said one of the BB's near me had SW BFII guides available so I figured what the heck, and went ahead and ordered it for store pick up. I received a blank email for what should have been my 'ready for pickup' email and thought they must have cancelled the order or something, but when I went down there today to pick up my B2 G1 free DS games, lo and behold, my penny guide was waiting for me for pickup.

Hell, if you think that's nuts, look at the link to his tradelist in his sig. He has 13 copies of the King Kong guide and 12 of Marc Ecko's Getting Up. LOL, that's some nice shiny toilet paper.

Lmao! you're right about that! Actually, I'd just rather salvage guides that are destined to the trash bin that's all. I am willing to trade the Xmen guides. I don't even have the game! I was just being a wiseass saying I got them after everyone was whining that their stores were wiped already. I really hate to see guides get thrown out and would rather save them. Oh and it's newbs like Kaniball that we do not need on here. Don't ever expect any trades with me dude. I don't care if you have the rarest game on the planet, I'd rather give my collection away than trade with someone that trashes me like that for no reason!:bomb:

Just a question...

Since BB is pulling their guides now, is it possible for us to buy the guides ahead of time at full price (the ones we know will drop) and after they drop, bring back our receipts and get refunded? I think they do that for regular items, so why not penny guides? What do you guys think?

I seriously doubt that would work, but I suppose someone could give it a shot sometime.

Assuming they would refund everything minus a penny, it might be hard to correctly guess what does drop ahead of time. On top of the hassle of returning the ones that do drop, youll have to go thru returning the ones that don't. It's worth letting others do the work, then buy the guides on Half.com for 75 cents when everyone competes

Actually, someone has already tried this (I believe it was Shrike, but I could be wrong). Nonetheless, the response was something to the effect of, "no we definitely can not and will not do that with the penny guides." So he tried to return them instead and he got lucky. Something along the lines of "We aren't supposed to let items like this get returned, but I'll do it for you this one time" (since he had the receipt and it was still in the Best Buy bag and all seemed to help).

Moral of the story... unless you get someone who is in their first week of training and doesn't call a manager, I don't think you'll get the price match AND you'll be stuck paying full price.

Silly question...but is there a set date that BB pennies out guides after the guide has been out so long? I ask because my local Best Buy has three copies of the Morrowind Prophecies guide that have been on the shelves forever. I keep waiting for them to drop because I don't want to pay more for the guide than I actually paid for the game!
Found a Ghost Recon Advance warrior guide for a penny:) But Quake 4 360 Guide rang up 19.99. WTF :bomb:
You sure it was for 360? I found the PC guide at a Best Buy.. they look almost exactly the same, and for some reason, the PC version hasn't been pennied.

Same with The Sims 2.
My b/f talked to his friend at BB, and he said they're being really strict about picking up those guides now. He gave us some advice to hide the guides you want (the ones that you know will drop soon) somewhere, and come in the day they drop and grab them. I guess that's my new strategy now.
I'm working at Best Buy, and as of 7:00 AM Tuesday the 29th, the following guides dropped to a penny.

X-Men #
Star Wars Battlefront 2
TC Advanced Warfighter
The Sims 2
Metroid Prime Hunters

Enjoy.
Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, I didn't check this thread until today thinking they would drop on Monday... what is this amazing CAG ability I have to narrowly miss out on penny guides? Is it a gift? A curse? :/

And I actually wanted two of the guides; GRAW and MP:H. :(

Positive. Some of the BB i go too actually stuff some behind the game . I saw the isle where the Guides were and there was any but many were beind the games themselves. Rang up 19

But today I managed to get a few more DOA 4 guides for some friends today.

Not only did my best buy have most of the guides from this drop, they had about 8 NFS: Most wanted and one black from the previous drop. And the day after I bought the last GRAW, they had another on the shelf the next day. Even the stores that pull the guides can often have a few guides show up the next week.

OH NO! I WANTED THE KING KONG STRATEGY GUIDE!!!! WHAT HAVE I DONE!?!?!?

Who the hell needs strategy guides anyway...seriously. gamefaqs.com
THe only way i would request trade for your guides is if i ran out of toilet paper at my house. I could wipe my ass with all 6 of the x-men strat guides for about a month. point is, let some other people buy them instead of you being a fucken asshole. "wiped clean." because u are a freak who collects video guides.

What do you care? They're going to be throw out anyway. If you have nothing positive to contribute to the thread perhaps NOT POSTING would be a better avenue for you.

Actually, I'm also a 'freak' who collects guides, but only really personal copies for the most part anymore. And, since Best Buy is now taking the guides off the shelves anymore instead of allowing them to be sold(in most cases because they weren't quick enough to grab them), it is kind of a good thing if someone from CAG grabs the guides they do find, so they don't end up in the dumpster.

And, to correct your little error, King Kong was pennied out at EB/Gamestop, NOT Best Buy, if I remember correctly. :D

For a newbie, you sure are a pushy, mouthy one. I doubt you'll last very long in the CAG community with that sort of attitude.
