CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
From now on, are all EB drops Gamestop drops and vice versa? I assume so, since they are technically the same company now. if so...the hunt is ON!
More importantly, are all current GS penny guides pennied at EB and vice versa? I know they were similar for the most part since the merger, but more looking back to previous drops.

I know Gran Turismo hardcover was listed as Gamestop .01 here - and rang up at EB for the same.

I found the following penny guides:

Best Buy (Union, NJ):
Matrix Online PC game - marked $0.01
Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard - Brady- marked $0.01
Dawn of War guide (PC) - Prima - marked $0.01
Rainbow Six Lockdown (PS2/XBOX) - Prima - marked $0.01
Everquest 2 (PC) - Prima - marked $0.01

Ebgames:
Half Life 2 - Raising the Bar - Prima - sealed
Pokemon Emerald (GBA) - Nintendo

I've had good luck at EB games this week with getty penny guides. It all depends on who you get at check out. I went to a store that I thought was very good about taking penny guides OFF the shelves. But I managed to find Age of Empires strategy guide and the kid at the counter just gave it to me!

I went an EB and he said they were pennied out today. I then went to a GS and they said they did their's on Monday. One of the guys printed me out the ones they did on Monday. Should be the same for both EB and GS.

Ooooh, Castlevania...drools. thanks! I'll check the 2 near me tonight!

They also pennied out Civiliazation IV guide I believe yesterday. Got lucky at one gamestop they had one civ guide and an age of empires 3 guide in the back. The employee was shocked that they ran up a penny and he asked the manager and he said it was my lucky day so I got both.

Hmm... I guess I will go out after all. Dawn of Sorrow, FFIV, Fire Emblem, and M&L. I hate having to ask for that many guides at once, but I guess I'll stop at GS first, since they have all their guides out on a rack.

Hmph... well, found Shining Force Neo at GS, and it's up for trade. I could have snagged Pokemon XD and Path of Neo, but I'd never tried to buy a penny guide there, so didn't bother trying three at once.

Struck out on Fire Emblem at EB, should have asked about others since he told me before he went looking that it would be free. Ah well. Might have to look for trades on those three if I don't have time to hit up another couple stores tomorrow.

It'd be nice if BB pennied out FFIV before the last one they have is gone.

If anyone gets an extra Shining Force, Gauntlet, or Castlevania let me know. Thanks
Damn, there's some awesome guides on there. I won't be able to land any of those (my GS is always on the ball, won't get a chance to get to EB), but if someone gets an extra Mario & Luigi, FFIV or Fire Emblem, let me know. I will glady buy and/or trade for them.

Well, I found a decent selection, though none of the ones I really wanted:

Gauntlet 7 Sorrows (X2)
Mark Ecko's Getting Up
Matrix Path of Neo (X3)
Pokemon XD
Romancing Saga
Shining Force (X2)

For some reason, the Shining Force guides and the PokemonXD guide look like they had water spill on them and dry. they aren't ruined, but it they are kinda warped at the top.

All extras are up for trade. Ive also got almost 100 guides at home I keep forgetting to put into a tradelist.

I'm looking for the Nintendo guides (Castlevania, FFIV, Fire Emblem, and Mario and Luigi PIT)

Thanks

Wouldn't mind one each of the following:
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-----Double Jump
Gauntlet Seven Sorrows----Brady
Marc Ecko's Getting Up----Brady
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time----Nintendo

If anyone wants to trade me Fire Emblem or Romancing Saga, see my list or PM me a price.

Espically since I was the one to tip you all off... :p

grab a stack and they told me to check with the manager. After waiting 30 min., the manager showed up. After begging for a while, they left me chose one guide. Grab a castlevania and left. Not a huge success but at least i got something.
As for the rest, most of them I wouldn't want or have already grabbed en masse from one of the Best Buys I've hit.
Wow... you'll pick up 15 copies of a worthless 360 guide at Best Buy, yet guides like Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, ones that actually DO sell, aren't worth your time?

Not really following the logic...

Seriously. I'm actually tempted to buy a Fire Emblem off someone if I can't find it tomorrow or trade for it.

When did BB penny out Fire Emblem, if they every carried it? Or did I just stumble upon one that was just removed from the site and should be pennied now or next week?

BB never carried the Fire Emblem guide for the Gamecube.

Some things aren't possible to understand.

I ended up buying the Morrowind: GOTY guide from BB with a GGC, since it's actually a guide I'd consider to be worth paying full price for. A bunch more I pillaged off of bradygames.com during the 65% off sale, mostly stuff that's either never been around in a while, or ones I know would be hard to pry out of GS or EB.

It's well worth $5-$7 for a guide IMHO, though $15-20? Nah.

I know I've never seen a FE (GC) guide at BB.

Since you just bought it you know it will be pennied out next week, right?;)

Nah, this goes back to many many months ago.

It was the first BB that I'd seen with one that didn't look like it had been beat to shit.

I need these 4 guides if anyone is able to get. Let me know, i can trade or pay.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-----Double Jump
Final Fantasy IV Advance----Nintendo
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance---Nintendo
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time----Nintendo

If anyone manages to find these... I'll trade for or buy them.

Final Fantasy IV Advance----Nintendo
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance---Nintendo
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time----Nintendo

Thanks in advance.

Wow, guys, I am SOOO pissed off right now. I ran into my first real "guide nazi" today. I go to my regular GS and there's always this one guy that hooks me up - if they penny stuff out he'll hold it there and give them to me. They had a HUGE stack of guides and he basically let me take everything - 3 copies of Fire Emblem, 2 Romancing Saga, SF Neo, etc. Then as I'm walking out the door this new employee yells "come back here - you can't have those. They have to go in the garbage." and literally made me give them back to him so he could toss them. I was in disbelief, mainly because some of the guides were NOT in the stack and were guides I, the customer, had wanted to purchase off the rack. Then when I asked to talk to the district manager and threatened to never shop there again he didn't really seem to care so I will be placing a call to corporate about this guy. His attitude was unbelievable, for a bunch of guides they were going to throw out. Anyway, end of rant. On a positive note, I did score an extra Gauntlet and Romancing Saga at my EB, so PM me if you want either of those. I need Fire Emblem :(

But if there are guides on the rack that a customer finds they are NOT supposed to pull them from their hands and throw them out. In fact, I think that might even be illegal.

Its not really illegal. Most states have laws that protect the stores from honest mistakes. Since most of the time the actual employee's don't know when a guide is pennied you can't expect them to actually take every guide off the shelf.

Even if it is illegal all your call to corporate would do is have them contact the store and insist that they remove all pennied guides immediately which would hurt you and not help at all.

i stopped by my gamestop these are the guides i got

romancing Saga x2 keeping one of the guides
final fantasy iv advance * thinking about keeping this
but I might trade it
marc ecko getting up x1
shining force neo x1

going to ebgames tomorrow to see what guides they have.

gonna check gamestop to see if i missed any guides

There's one at my BB that's still in mint condition. I'm surprised it's not beat up by people coming in to use it w/o paying $20.:) It's been there for at least a year.

I think my best buy has several of the morrowing GOTY guides. What day will they be pennied out? I can swing by and snag em for CAG'ers since i don't need em

I was only speculating. There's nothing official.

It's not the point whether it's illegal or not - the salesperson was rude and most of all, didn't care whether I shopped there are not. And that is why I will call corporate. Remember, the customer is always right!

I checked with my gamestop and the manager said they are currently being audited due to people getting the penny guides and selling em on ebay. They are currently recieving a list of guides that are pennied the day before w/ strict orders to dispose of them all by ripping off front cover and throwing em out.

So if anyone gets any of those guides available let me know.

I would have kept on walking.

Also my buddy back in Texas works at GS and grabs $.01 when he can and he grabbed the following this week:

25 to Life
Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows
Romancing Saga
Shining Force Neo
The Warriors

I won't have them in hand until July, but anyone interested in Romancing Saga or Shining Force Neo I will gladly trade. Let me know and I will hold them for you.
I would have kept on walking.
Same, I would have walked right out the door, espically since the other guy told you could have them. I just would have acted like I never even heard the guy.

What's he going to do, follow you out of the store for a bunch of penny guides?

one of the reason the manager wont let me buy them is that "people well sell them on ebay" What i do with what buy should be none of your business.

Sounds like he's just a jealous prick.

Do $.01 guides ring up this amount regardless of price tag on cover? Just wondering so I don't lug a stack full of guides to the register for nothing.

They will ring up a cent, and you know they'll ring up 1 cent because the employee will start acting very weird.

If you start seeing a bunch of keystrokes and the full price comes up, you know you've just been fucked.

Case in point, I go to buy the GT 4 hardcover book I found... employee rings it up once, twice, calls another guy over, they mumble softly "This can't be right... here do this..." My total is now $36 something because the guide was $35.

I left it there.

Found some of the guides. Already pm some CAGs that I could help (Roufuss, and psunami). Oh, and psunami, please clear some of your messages, so I can reply. Oh, and I have a Pokemon XD guide for trade as well (the Brady one, since now I found a Nintendo one for me)
Thanks.

If anyone can get me any of the following guides, I'd pay about $5 each or trade some games from my Trade List or a combination of cash+trades.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-----Double Jump
Final Fantasy IV Advance----Nintendo
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance---Nintendo
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time----Nintendo
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness----Nintendo
Romancing SaGa-----Brady
Shining Force NEO----Brady

lol, I've seen that before. Sometimes it's used guides, but I saw a couple that they just tried to put a new barcode on to scan em for 5 bucks. I just took off the label before bringin them to the counter. Yeah, cuz ya know, Makai Kingdom is "Nintendo Power guide vol IV" for 5 bucks

Speaking of 5 bucks, I'll paypapl 5 bucks + shipping for Castevania DS if nobody wants anything I have for trade for it. It's currently the only DJ guide I don't have, and that's only cuz I haven't ever seen it in a store, or I woulda bought it at cost. I love Double Jump!
