CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

Alright, a quick 15 mile round trip netted the following experiences:

GS #1
Stupidly bought the Prima Pokemon XD guide (I really need to start writing down what publisher these are) - but it was a sealed one, so I can return it no problem next time I'm in a GS. No other pennies.

GS #2
Found another Shining Force Neo, Romancing SaGa, and FFIV (yay). The manager was PISSED when I asked him to price check. He just scanned it, threw it off to the side (repeat three times), bagged them, and handed them to me without saying a word.

GS #3
Got Viewtiful Joe for a buck (generic UPC, pretty beat up, but oh well). They had a ton of old guides there, but I only had a list of ones I want, so couldn't say what else may have been pennied. Kingdom Hearts: CoM is ridiculously still full price.

EB #1
Girl had no clue what to do with penny guides. Scanned them a few times, manually adjusted to full price (which I nixed immediately), then she called another store when all three rang up at a penny. Whoever she was talking to just told her to give them to me, so that's what she did. Score there: FFIV, Romancing SaGa, 25 to Life.

So... if anyone has Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, Mario & Luigi, or especially Fire Emblem (or anything else on my want list) hit me up!

Total for trade:
25 to Life x1
Shining Force Neo x2
Romancing SaGa x2
FFIV x1

went to ebgames today managed to get
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-Double Jump x1
Mario & Luigi partners in time x2

Gamestop
final fantasy iv advance x2-- I am keeping one of them
gantlet seven sorrows
fire emblem path of radiance -- only copy they had

I went to the EB nearest to my house (which is a new one, since I've moved recently), and it's sort of an out of the way EB. I've been in there once prior, where I managed to get FSW: 10H for the $9.99 pricing mistake.

Today, I went in there and figured that I'd see what they had for penny guides from the recent drops. Going in armed with a BT-enabled PDA & BT cellphone, where I can surf CAG in-store makes for a very powerful ally in guide hunting.

They had a few guides up front, so I asked where the guides were. The rep instore told me they moved them to a rack about halfway in the back. So, I went over to go look. I ran through the guides, with this thread on my PDA, checking through the last couple of pages, as well as the OP. After some work, I took a nice stack up to the counter and had the rep ring them out. A few weren't pennied, and a couple of them didn't come up, so she removed the non-pennied ones and put the ones that didn't come up to the side.

So, as she's done with the transaction, she runs off to the back to find some larger bags for the guides. After a few minutes, I'm thinking she's calling her store manager or the RM/DM to ask if she can sell them. However, she comes back with a box, and puts the guides in the box for me. I go to grab a dollar out of my wallet, and she decides to cancel the transaction and give me the guides for free.

In complete amazement, she asked me how I knew they all were pennied. To which I told her, "Most guides aren't worth the paper they're printed on for the prices they're charging, so when they drop to a penny, it's an important thing to know". I smiled and headed out the door.

Now, on to the list of what I scored:
Genji: Dawn Of The Samurai (DoubleJump)
Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow (DoubleJump)
Makai Kingdom: Chronicles Of The Sacred Tome (DoubleJump) (x2)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocture (DoubleJump)
Phatom Brave (DoubleJump)
Dungeon Siege II (Sybex) (x2)
Romancing SaGa (Brady)
GT4 - Driving The Game: The GT Experience (Prima hardback) (x2)

One of the Makai Kingdom, the Genji and the SMT: N guides have some wear on them, the rest are pretty much perfect.

For all the times EB's dicksmacked me when I found penny guides, I think this makes up for it, a little. I'm sure there might be some other penny guides there, though the thread's a little hard to read on a PDA. I'll have to go through the larger list that someone posted a few pages back and see what matches to that list. Might be a nice little motherload to pick clean. :D

No HL2: RTB book, however.

My EB had the guides pulled but they did have SSX On Tour and Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood guides marked at .99. .99 works for me.
My EB had the guides pulled but they did have SSX On Tour and Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood guides marked at .99. .99 works for me.
Methinks I might have to check for that when I make my second pass. :D

Whoa please people make me some deals for Makai Kingdom guide and Shining Force Neo.... Im flat broke but gotta have those guides.... Genji sounds awesome as well....... Damn not having money! :whistle2:(
They will ring up a cent, and you know they'll ring up 1 cent because the employee will start acting very weird.

If you start seeing a bunch of keystrokes and the full price comes up, you know you've just been fucked.

Case in point, I go to buy the GT 4 hardcover book I found... employee rings it up once, twice, calls another guy over, they mumble softly "This can't be right... here do this..." My total is now $36 something because the guide was $35.

I left it there.
This shit happened to me about a month ago. I went to a local EB and they had 2 copies of the GT4 Hardback. The one I took up for a price check had no sticker. Of course the chick, no offense ladies, behind the counter did just as you said stumbled and entered something in the computer. Then she printed off a new sticker that was like $36. I'll be heading back this weekend and if they pull this I'll call the cashier out. They will give it to me for the price it rings up or I'll make a scene until they toss it in the back room:p Of course if this were to happen once I left the book would be right back on the shelf, I would feel a little better letting off some steam:)
LOL I only saw a single copy of the Mario n Luigi one the other day when I went to check on copies of Timesplitters for FYE trade fodder. As for the rest, most of them I wouldn't want or have already grabbed en masse from one of the Best Buys I've hit.

BTW, can I ask you all a question. For an auction of 3 360 guides, what would be a decent price to charge? I'm just curious because I finally put a lot of Quake 4, Condemned and PGR3 on Ebay, but virtually NO bites.

I had someone from Canada offer me $15 SHIPPED, but I told them I would wait till auctions end.
Hmm...3 worthless 360 guides...start them at a penny plus $5 Media Mail shipping. You'll make $1.00 on the shipping if they sell. That's about the best you're gonna do.

After you add in time and gas, your business is losing about $1.00 for every guide you buy.

I wound up pretty lucky. I stopped at a total of two EB's (should have stopped at Gamestop too, but they tend to be more dicks for store clerks there than the local clerks at EB. One of my favorite clerks was at the 2nd store that I went to. I guess he 'got' in trouble for selling me penny guides last time & brought almost all the guides I was looking for (just one of each: Final Fantasy IV, Fire Emblem, Shining Force Neo, Mario & Luigi, & Pokemon XD) and told me that I can have two of the five.

I wound up telling him that I was allowed to take guides from the prior EB that I visited and then told him the only reason why I was going store to store was to look for the new Outrun for Xbox (which was true as well) Well I wound up walking out with all of the guides (and the Pokemon XD that he pulled wound up being the Prima version instead of the Nintendo version...didn't realize until after I hit the car with the woman) I bought a copy of Lost Magic just so I could at least walk out with one 'bought' item

Good times!

If anyone can get me any of the following guides, I'd pay about $5 each or trade some games from my Trade List or a combination of cash+trades.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-----Double Jump
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time----Nintendo
Makai Kingdom: Chronicles Of The Sacred Tome (DoubleJump)
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness----Nintendo
Shining Force NEO----Brady
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocture (DoubleJump)
Sigma Star Saga/Rebel Star

I would probably pay more for the SMT Nocturne guide since it's harder to find.

Thanks to the kind CAGs who have gotten me 3 of the guides I needed so far!

Went back to the same EB I was at last night, this time with the list in hand that Flea Flicka posted.

Found the following:
Brothers In Arms: Earned In Blood (Prima) (x3) - $0.99 each
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Nintendo)
DOA: Ultimate (Prima)
Age Of Empires 3 (Sybex) (x3)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Nintendo) (x2)
Star Fox: Assault (Nintendo)
Star Wars: Battlefront (Prima) (x2)
Enthusia Professional Racing (Prima) (x2)
Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich (Brady)
Geist (Nintendo) (x2)
Act Of War: Direct Action (Brady)
Rome: Total War - Barbarian Invasion (Prima)
Dungeon and Dragons: Dragonshard (Brady)
Call Of Duty: United Offensive (Brady) (x2)
The Punisher (Prima) (x2)

All of the guides save the BiA: EiB guides were penny, and the same rep from last night didn't charge me for any of them. So, for $3.15, walked out with an armload of guides, again.

I'm keeping 1 of the AOE III, Punisher & BIA: EIB guides for myself. Rest, who knows. Methinks it might be time for a TL to dump all these guides I'm overflowing with.

I hit 2 EB's, a GS, and a Funcoland last night. Found a few more guides:
Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood---Brady(1)
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30-----Brady(2)
Arc the Lad: End of Darkness---------Brady(2)
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time----Nintendo(1)
The Warriors------------------------------Brady(2)
Ultimate Spider-Man---------------------Brady(1)

I'm still looking for:
Makai Kingdom: Chronicles Of The Sacred Tome (DoubleJump)
Shining Force NEO----Brady
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocture (DoubleJump)
25 to Life----Brady
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow-----Double Jump
Gauntlet Seven Sorrows----Brady

If anybody wants to trade for or sell, send me a PM.

I picked up a Stubbs the Zombie guide at an EB this past week. The clerk scanned it then said "This guide's on closeout, let me get that price for you." He punched in a couple numbers, then said it would be $3.99. I figured I'd get it since it's a guide I actually wanted. The weird thing is the receipt didn't list the guide but just said something generic like "Closeout item" with a numerical code next to it.

Later that day, I went to a different EB and brought some known penny guides (SF: AC, America's Army, Tak 3) to the register. This time the clerk said they were on clearance for either $3.99 or $4.99 each. I said they were supposed to be pennied and the clerk said "nope, they hadn't dropped that far in price yet."

So this happened to me twice at two different EB's. Anyone else have a similar experience recently? The clerk at the first EB said the closeout price had something to do with the merger with Gamestop - saying it was an item that wasn't in Gamestop's system, that's why it was ringing up as a closeout item.

I would MUCH rather them acknowledge the guides that have dropped to a penny, and charge $3.99 or so for them, rather then them just piling them up, throwing them out, making a big deal about it.

Please let this be widespread.

Yeah, I'd definitely pay $3.99 for several of the recent drops like Castlevania: DoS, Final Fantasy IV Advance, Mario & Luigi, and Shining Force Neo.

I found a Stubbs the Zombie at an EB yesterday marked 99 cent, I bought it of course. I saw 2 more at a GS with the regular price on it. Should Stubbs be pennied?

went to best buy and grabbed star wars battlefront II guide. it rang up 16.99 today. the dragon quest 8 guide also rang up 17.99 (worth a try). weren't the star wars guides supposed to be .01?

I got these penny guides:

stubbs (paid .99 cents for it a few days ago, so now I have 2)

romancing saga-I was at an eb and noticed most guides weren't out. I asked if he had a mario and luigi and he checked the back. The guides were on the door and I noticed a romancing saga (helped that the words were big so I could see form a distance) and asked him for that. He went to change it to full price (he checked the book then muttered 15.99 and he started to type it in), but I said I thought it was clearanced. He then gave it to me for a penny. There were also 3 sigma stars, but I had a personal copy and felt strange asking for multiples in this situation.

Star Wars Republic Commano
Sigma Star/Rebel Star (I couldn't find any when they were pennied and eventually traded for one. I found this one in an eb that didn't have it the last two times I went and could have grabbed 4 total yesterday)
Shining force neo x2
FFIV

I really want a mario and luigi partners in time guide, and I'd also like a fire emblem path of radiance guide. If anyone has one I'll trade a stubbs or shining force neo, or something from my trade list.

im Looking for

I've got 3 of the 4 you want. Sent you pm.
So most of these guides cost only $0.1? Why would they charge that little?
I think its supposed to just be a marker that they are not supposed to be sold anymore. Why they didn't make it $999.99 or something, I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with value of inventory reasons.

Because if they charge $999.99 and someone stole the guide out of the store, that would destroy a store's profit margins, even though it was just imaginary profit, since the computer would still show them as missing a $999.99 guide if it didn't get deleted right.

At .01 cent, it's just alot easier to self contain merchandise that needs to be destroyed.
So you just walk in with a list and find the ones you're looking for and they automatically ring up as 1 cent each?
You get one of the following scenarios:
1) The UPC doesn't scan, though the SKU # from the sticky tag does scan, and it comes up as $0.01. (EB/GS)
2) The UPC does scan, and it rings up at $0.01 (EB/GS & BB).
3) The UPC doesn't scan nor the SKU # comes up in the computer. (EB/GS)
4) The UPC or SKU does scan, though it doesn't scan as $0.01, it scans as something else, like $0.99. (EB/GS)

In some cases, if it doesn't scan by UPC or SKU #, sometimes you can get it for free, though it depends on the rep. If it scans out at $0.01 either by UPC or SKU, then you might get the rep changing the price up to something bigger, such as the list price.

What happens with the guide after the price is check depends on the person running the register.

Makes sense to me. If they ran inventory and found 20 penny guides gone, and each was $999.99 each, that would be a real mess. Missing $0.20 is a whole different story.

I guess it works out best for us that they don't make it something like DON'T SELL instead of $0.01.

Programmatically, it wouldn't be hard to just convert all 999.99 guides to $0 loss in that case. Assuming that the stores truly are supposed to send back covers and get credit back from the manufacturer, it is a true loss to get rid of the guides at a penny each.
Of course, im not advocating that practice because i love my penny guides - just looking at it from the perspective of the retailer. Like shrike said, it would make more sense for them to change the value to a DONT SELL equivalent so it wouldn't sell at all.
I got quoted $3.99 today for Stubbs. Does anyone have the correct number they're supposed to key in for it?
It should be .01 (I got one at this price), but it seems some eb's are putting generic stickers on them at .99. The 3.99 may have been a generic sticker, but it's more likely the made it up when they saw the penny.

When I found the Stubbs guides at another EB, it didn't scan into the computer. The rep was speaking to the store manager about it, and they told him to ring it at $3.99. :bomb:

Since I didn't think they'd be there the next time I was there, I picked them up for $3.99. Better to snatch them up than let them get tossed.

hmmm is Shadow of the Colossus pennied out at GS or EB yet? I saw EB had alot but GS had none.... BestBuy has no more guides left so I cant hit them up anymore :whistle2:(

That makes three of us having the same experience recently with this guide. Does your receipt say something to the effect of "Closeout" in the item description?

As detailed earlier, I found 3 Stubbs' guides, which I was charged $3.99 each. This was a different EB, not the one I've scored numerous guides at.

I went back to this "source" EB again today, and found the following:

Resident Evil: Outbreak (Brady) (x3)
SSX On Tour (Prima) (x2)
Dead To Rights II: Hell To Pay (Brady) (x2)
Shadow Of Rome (Brady) (x2)
DOOM 3 (Xbox) (Prima) (x2)
SOCOM II: US Navy Seals (Brady)
Tenchu: Fatal Shadows (Brady) (x2)

All given out for free, as rung out as a penny each.

At this point, I felt a bit guilty about taking all these penny guides, so I asked the two reps (one of them being the one who's dealt with me on Thursday and Friday) what their policy on penny guides was, since I didn't want to get them in trouble. They told me that they really didn't have one, so they were supposed to dispose of them, and in this case, they're disposing of them to me.

I think this one is cleaned out of penny guides, though I know I'll be keeping a very close eye on this one when they next batch pennies out, to see what happens.

Which reminds me, we're at the beginning of the month, so BB might be pennying out more guides this week.
That makes three of us having the same experience recently with this guide. Does your receipt say something to the effect of "Closeout" in the item description?
It says:
Closeout-FINAL SA $3.99
250008 025/000

The EB manager on the phone gave him that SKU to ring them out at.

Shrike, it sounds like you have at least one "good" EB in town. Just hope that a new store manager doesn't ruin it.

I believe that's the same SKU my Stubbs had on the receipt. $4 is not bad at all for a guide I actually wanted.

I checked Best Buy's website and nothing of note is missing yet. Still waiting on that eventual DQVIII guide drop...
i heard from some one that madden 06 is pennied out at gamestop/ebgames

can anyone confirm this
The guy at a Funcoland said it was pennied. He said that the NCAA Football 06 was also. He just gave them both to me. They were both Prima. Since GS owns Funcoland, it should be for GS and EB too but it might be YMMV.

The local BestBuy is interesting to say the least. They probably have about 2 of those DQVIII guides, but about 35 NFS:MW. Even if I pick a couple, they're gonna have to throw the rest into the trash whenever the penny drop for that guide happens. What a waste of space and paper.

I am looking for the following guides:
Genji: Dawn Of The Samurai (DoubleJump)
Shadow Of Rome (Brady)
Tenchu: Fatal Shadows (Brady)
Shining force Neo

Check my trade list.

Thanks

Yeah, I think I finally have a "source" EB. Which is why I thought best to make sure I understood why they were being so generous and making sure that they knew the last thing I wanted was them getting in trouble.

Their apparent shock and amazement of me coming in and getting stacks of penny guides is always funny.

Hopefully, me taking the time to make sure I understood why they were being so generous and making sure they knew I didn't want them to get fucked over will keep that relationship going for a while.

Since they have a few DQ8 guides out there :D, as well as a couple RE Archives books.

When they penny em, keep me in mind for a DQ8 if you could. I really want that guide, but none of the local shops have any that I've seen.

I'll see what I can do. No promises, since things could change tomorrow, for all I know.

No luck on the G: 7S, ME GU: CUP, M&L: PiT guides for me, at the two I've been to.
