CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

I have a Double Jump Castlevania DS guide I'd trade for Mario & Luigi Partners In Time or another guide for a game I own. I also saw a Double Jump Genji guide at Gamestop I could probably grab.

I also have several other guides on my trade list. Mostly looking for Nintendo guides for games I own.

My BB had a bunch of Quake 4 PC guides at the last drop, probably still there. Not sure about F.E.A.R. And I anticipate getting both of those games one day. When I have a nice computer.

checked a handful of guides at best buy today.

Dead or Alive 4 = 16.99
Final Fantasy 4 = 14.99
Morrowind GOTY = 19.99
Age Of Empires III = 19.99
Need For Speed: Most Wanted = 16.99

I didn't check the cover price on morrow wind but the only reduction i recognized was

Perfect Dark Zero = 9.99

OK, so today I go to EB to look for some penny guides from the latest list of drops. I find Shining Force Neo, FF IV and the Castlevania Dawn Of Sorrow guides and proceed to the register to check out. I also grabbed a dvd so I was actually paying for something. So the cashier starts ringing up everything and when the guides come up as a penny she proceeds to price override each one to $14.99! I see this happening and tell her "If those guides are ringing up for a penny, then that's what I expect to pay for them, I don't want them if they are full price." And to my surprise, without a word she removes the overrides and re-scans them at the .01 price and lets me have them! I said thank you and got the hell out of there before they changed their mind or a manager found out. So, now I have a castlevania Dawn Of Sorrow FT as I don't own the system that it's on and I don't plan on getting one anytime soon. I'll trade it for any 1 of these: Culdcept, Wild Arms 4 or WA Alter Code F, Makai Kingdom, Digital Devil Saga, Golden Sun Dual guide, Wild Arms 2. Or PM me with an offer of what you've got available.

i dont think you will have any success getting these guides
Culdcept, Wild Arms 4 or WA Alter Code F, Digital Devil Saga, Golden Sun Dual guide, Wild Arms 2

they have dropped to a penny yet, full price. and some are harder to find more than others

Makai Kingdom dropped.

I have the following guides for trade from the recent drop:

Civilization IV- 1
Shining Force Neo- 1 (spoken for)
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance- 1 (spoken for)
Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows- 1
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness- 1
Final Fantasy IV Advance- 2
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time- 1 (spoken for)

PM for trades (not really looking to sell, but I may entertain offers). Also, please note that I will be out of town from the 2nd-6th, so I will be able to check messages periodically, but I will not be able to ship out until the 8th (Monday).

I hit up an EB just to see what they had. I didn't have high hopes as I've been denied here before.

I got lucky and snagged :

Shining Force Neo x2
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance x2
Stubbs the Zombie x1
FFIV x2
Mario and Luigi PiT x1

Went to an EB near school - they had a bunch of the drops at .99 cents. I noticed Stubbs and SSx on Tour. Wouldv'e grabbed them if i hadn't traded for them already.
I did get some info though. I asked if that is what they are doing with penny guides now. Dude said "Yea, but only with the ones we outright own, mostly EA guides." So i guess EB fully buys those guides so can mark down as they please. Makes sense.

i checked the prices on

fear, and quake 4 pc at best buy, they rang up full price.
i did pick up the sims 2 university pc guide for a penny though

That Sims 2: University guide is really cool, because not only does it have the expansion, but it also has the entire Sims 2 guide reprinted in it as well.

Yet, the actual Sims 2 guide for PC is still full price

i know, i was like why is this sims guide full price.

Still have one Mario and Luigi PIT, in case anybody is looking for one. Looking for Castlevania DOS. I also have a pokemon XD guide (Prima version from BB drop).
That Sims 2: University guide is really cool, because not only does it have the expansion, but it also has the entire Sims 2 guide reprinted in it as well.

Yet, the actual Sims 2 guide for PC is still full price
That Sims 2 University guide is huge. Odd that it's pennied out and the main guide isn't. Very odd indeed.

My girlfriend would love me forever if somebody can get me a Sims 2 University guide. Is $5 a reasonable offer for it or is it harder to find than that?

I would check the local Best Buys here but Roufuss usually has them covered well before me.
I have the following guides for trade from the recent drop:

Civilization IV- 1
Shining Force Neo- 1
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance- 1
Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows- 1
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness- 2
Final Fantasy IV Advance- 2
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time- 1 (spoken for)

PM for trades (not really looking to sell, but I may entertain offers). Also, please note that I will be out of town from the 2nd-6th, so I will be able to check messages periodically, but I will not be able to ship out until the 8th (Monday).
I'm interested in the Fire Emblem and Pokemon XD guides. PMed ya.

The only Sims 2 University guide I ever saw was in Port Richey, and it was the only one I've ever seen, and that's out of all six Best Buy's around us.

Well, looks like the manager at the EB I've been getting guides from for the last several drops has decided to turn into an asshole. I'm looking today, and notice that very few are there - it was the same with the last drop. I figured someone else had figured out they had the penny guides & had beat me to them. But the manager speaks up and tells me "We've started doing our jobs, man, you're not gonna hit the gold mine anymore." I found it vaguely amusing that he admitted they hadn't been doing their jobs in the past, but let it slide. I found a few they had missed, and asked him if he minded me getting those - he said ok.

So I'm checking out, and he keeps on with the conversation. "Do you have a store or somethin'?" - I tell him no, as I've told him every other time I've been in there - I collect them, and I trade the extras online for others I'm looking for. "Yea, it actually hurts Gamestop to sell 'em for a penny, we're supposed to pull 'em". I'm not saying much, just thinking to myself, "OK, it's your damn job to pull them, how is it MY fault that you're all lazy incompetent SOB's?"

Then he says something that really bugs me: "Yea, the sad thing is we just throw 'em away. We had 80 in the store the other day, and we just threw 'em out. Of course, anybody can get 'em outta the dumpster if they want." Jackass - he basically told me he'd rather throw them out than see me get them, but if I wanted to dumpster dive for them I could.

fucker.

Anyway, I found 2 of the 3 I really wanted - of course, Castlevania: DoS being the one I missed. So if anyone has a spare, please check my list in my sig.

I got denied at a different store today. This particular store had tons of guides up out of the reach of customers (god only knows for what reason). I noticed they had tons of penny guides up there. I walked in today, and they had brought everything down. I didn't feel like bringing up too many just to get denied, so I grabbed two (GT4 hard cover book, and Mario and Luigi PIT for more trades). The manager scanned them and refused to sell them. I tried to pretend I was surprised, but I just walked out without making a big deal. They won't pull them or sell them, so they just sit there taking up space...arghh

If the national chains were smart, they would require their employees to destroy all penny guides immediately, stripping their covers and trashing them. This would probably increase strategy guide sales in the long run since there are thousands of guide collectors that tend to wait for guides to be pennied out. From a retail perspective, it makes no sense to ever let anyone buy a guide for a penny. You're basically telling your customers...don't ever give us any money again...just wait long enough and you can have all our product for free.

If the retail chains were smart, they wouldn't charge $15-20 for a fucking book. All Brady guides can be bought directly from Brady for 35-40% off, shipped for free. Retail chains make a KILLING on these books.

If they just marked them down to a decent price, I'd buy them. $10 is a perfectly acceptable starting price, and after they get old mark them down to $5 or so.

I would not have nearly the number of guides I have now if it weren't for them being pennied out, and thinking I would have paid full price for them if I didn't have any other option is ludicrous.

What would you consider a reasonable price for a guide, Rictor?

IMO, a 'reasonable' price would be $5. I mean, I can recall when I used to buy guides for every game I bought, in case I got stuck.

That was probably 5-10 years ago, they were $14.99 cover price then.

Now, I see them retailing for $17.99-$19.99 and then these stores wonder WHY they don't move......its kind of ridiculous.

Either way, I've reduced my 'guide addiction' to just wherever I happen to be headed(no special trips anymore) and I mainly get them for games I have already.

Mind you, my personal collection(a copy of each from my bunches of guides I have) numbers 60 + already.

May I just ask you a question - how do you buy pennied guides at GameStop without having whoever is behind the counter tearing off the cover? I was just asking because I know of one store in my area that has a whole bunch of guides on the list.

No luck getting the Castlevania: DoS guide, so I would really like to trade for one. Please CML if you have one for trade; I have LOTS of guides including many from the most recent drops.

Doctordoom, the only real way to try and buy penny guides are to find them on the shelf and hope beyond hope that the manager or one of the clerks doesn't give you the shpeel about 'we cant sell these'.

My policy has always been at these stores, if its ON the shelf, its for sale, whatever it rings up to.

However, getting EB/GS to follow that policy is another story. If they pulled the guides they're supposed to, then they wouldn't be ON the shelf when I go to grab them, would they?

For anyone who was seeking out this FF IV guide, don't bother looking hard. This is the worst guide I've come across in a long time... it literally has NOTHING AT ALL on the extra two dungeons added into the game, and still does that annoying ??? for the end boss stats.

Nintendo makes some horrible guides.... the FF 4 guide clocks in at 104 pages which is a disgrace.

Yeah, I was surprised to get a few requests for this guide, which I snagged for other CAGs. It is just crappy to say the least. It's right up there with the Wrestlemania 21 guide. That one is about 30 pages of button combinations...:bomb:

I used NP's FFIV guide when I played and finished FFIV. I was also a little disappointed that there weren't any dungeon maps for the Lunar Ruins considering that FFI&II guide has all the maps for the extra levels. Oh well. Maybe for FFV and FFVI, the guides will have the maps for all the new levels.

I busted out the guide I had for the PS1 release. Except for missing the extra dungeons, it worked great, and was much better than the Nintendo Power one.

Noticed today that most stores around here still have most of the guides from the recent drop, except Castlevania of course. I also noticed that God of War got a reprint, without the DVD. So, if your store still has one with the DVD, I'd purchase it, instead of waiting. This is one of the few guides that is worth its retail price, much like the DoubleJump books.
is god of war guide pennied out?
God of War was pennied at Toys R Us a while back, but it has not been pennied at gamestop/ebgames. And since I noticed my local gamestop got a fresh reprint (15 guides without DVD), I doubt that it'll be pennied out anytime soon. Some guides take forever to be pennied at gamestop/ebgames.

Sounds like the experience I had, except I ended up getting nothing out of it. Corporate did get a nice call from me though :)

maybe thats why the managers started changing their policy about pulling the guides from their shelves, oh well no more penny guides

huge pennied out at EB today!!!
Saw a 6 feet long list of pennied out items, but it only said "Closeout," so I have no idea what exactly the item is.

it think it means the prices dropped to .99 cents

thats what it said on my reciept when i bought stubbs and brother in arms earned in blood guide

Man, that Castlevania guide weighs a ton, for a little guide. Mind you, most of the rest of my recent pickups from this round of drops(and a few older ones) are just going into my personal collection.

And to whoever found that the SSX On Tour guide was .99, let me just add, if you have a Gamer card from EB/GS, they take 10% off those guides too, as I got mine for .89.

I wonder if this works for ALL the lower priced guides?
