CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
Does anyone ship 4-5 guides at once? If so, how much does it usually cost? I'm ditching some of my old guides (from n64 to early ps2) and will more than likely trade them here or ebay them if a local buyer doesn't come through with the deal.
If you use Media Mail, the increase in cost is minimal. I'd imagine if you were using another service (first class), the increase in weight would make your sale not worthwhile, unless the buyer is paying for it all.

Guides fit into the media mail guidelines, so you can use media mail without any issue.

Most guides barely fit into first class on their own, so 4-5 guides would either be media mail, parcel post or priority mail.

http://postcalc.usps.gov is your friend for seeing what the various options would be for shipment pricing.

If I ship a few guides and they aren't large, I put them into a Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope and ship it for $4.05. It only takes 2 to 3 days, and weight isn't an issue since its a flat rate.

If you create your label at www.usps.com and pay for it online, you get free delivery confirmation as well. You can order their flat rate envelopes online and they'll deliver them to you for free.
Penny guides has always been a myth to me, I looked everywhere, never found anything... until today!!!

I just got TWO penny guides from EB games:

Sigma Star Saga / Rebelstar Tactical Command Combo

and...

Romancing SaGa !!!

I think Romancing SaGa is newnly pennyed, as it was still $15.99 in GameStop last week I checked... but man, today is a truely happy day for me, I almost wanted to cried when the cashier told me BOTH SSS/RTC and RSaGa are penny guides!!! I also asked about Star Ocean: Till the end of Time, but that was still $15.99, so I told the dude, I'll just take the two penny guides, thank you. Handed him a buck and got 98c back... :bouncy:

Today, I feel that I have become a true CAG! Thank you OP, thanks to everyone who made this topic! I feel alive! :bouncy:

To all those who still think penny guide is a myth, have faith man, the day will come for you and you'll be on top of the world!
And just keep your fingers crossed that the cashier doesn't respond by taking the guide and all other copies to the back to be destroyed.

Went to a BB today that I didn't go to during last drop to see if there were any left behind, and found a Price of Persia : Warrior Within. I think this guide dropped before I even started collecting guides - so I wasn't 100% sure it had dropped at BB in particular so i had it checked. 'Item not Found'.
Then I noticed that the UPC was actually ripped off from the back of the guide. Knew then that they mustve sent that back to the publisher and the guide never made it to the dumpster, got lost or something and got put back out on the floor recently.
He then checked by SKU and it came up a penny - so i said thanks and took it from his hand before he could think about what to tell me. Did the same thing at the register and got away with it =]

Maybe I'm missing it in the first post, but is there a list of previous penny guides from Game Crazy other than ones from the last few months? I was at GC for the classic plastic sale today and noticed some pretty old guides...like Zeda Windwaker, Animal Crossing, etc.
Did Ultimate Spider-Man ever .01 out at TRU?
The guide?

If you want that guide, PM me, I've got 8 extra copies and I'd love to sell you one dirt cheap.

You guys are my new heroes, thanks.

Here's a very partial list of guides recently pennied out at Game Crazy. I think these were pennied out about 2 weeks ago when stores did inventory. As a general rule, pennied guides are pretty difficult to get at Gamecrazy. N = Nintendo, P = Prima, B = Brady

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (N)
Pikmin 2 (N)
Battalion Wars (N)
Zelda: 4 Swords Adventures (N)
Starfox Assault (N)
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (N)
Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green (N)
Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green (P)
Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone (P)
Getaway Black Monday w/ DVD (P)
Yu-Gi-Oh Dawn of Destiny (P)
Yu-Gi-Oh Destiny Board Traveler (P)
Killzone (P)
Cold Winter (P)
Coded Arms (B)
Grand THeft Auto Liberty City Stories (B)
Resident Evil Outbreak #2 (B)
Dead to Rights II (B)
Ratchet Up Your Arsenal (B)
Musashi Samurai Legend (B)
Fullmetal Alchemist 2 (B)

Looks like my TRU is under new management so they are pulling penny guides off shelves. So now I have no luck at TRU/EB/or GS. Least I still have my good ole best buy that actually labels em at $.01.

If anyone gets any of these from a gamecrazy let me know. Sucks to not have any in my state.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Musashi Samurai Legend (B) - Might already have

I actually went to a GC store that had a shelf of old guides behind the counter...stuff from 2-4 years back. No idea why they were hanging on to it as the district manager is the one that's usually working at that store and has to know they are pennied out. He seems to be a collector though, so maybe he can't bare to throw away guides and saves them to give out to MVP Card holders...I'll ask next time I'm in there since I bought an MVP card recently.

Remember if you ship media mail they will not try to return to sender if for any reason it can not be delivered. I don't remember how much, but you can request them to add on the return if undelivered option. Most of the time you don't have to worry about it, but if its worth something I suggest shipping it another way or adding the return option...

I've sent a guide media mail that i sold on half.com - the buyer never picked it up from the post office for whatever reason and it returned to me. i had to pay the return postage though.

I think it is "Bound Printed Matter" where they will not return the package, I'm not sure about media mail . . . but I think they will return it (but charge you for it).

But I do know for sure that they will return any package as long as you add delivery confirmation to it.

Yes, but some stupid postal employees think they can't and will reject them. They can open and inspect Media Mail packages and often do. I haven't had a problem with it though. Use a post office that's always busy as they don't have the free time to be a pain in your ass like the small town post offices do.
Even though this is off-topic, since media mail is being discussed - can video games be sent media mail?
First Class and media mail are very similar in pricing for 1 game - but i guess if you are sending a bunch its cheaper media

If your shipping disc format games and they ask what your shipping, just say DVDs/CDs.

I picked up a couple more Zelda Four Swords Guides from TRU. Both up for trade.

My one friend n I took a trek out to central Pennsylvania today for the heck of it.

I grabbed a better looking copy of the Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow guide, which I'm keeping for my personal collection.

However, that does mean that the original copy I found in another out of the way EB is up for sale now. No reasonable offer will be refused.

Note: I said REASONABLE. LOL

On the same note, I stopped at the Lycoming Mall area TRU on the way back tonight. And there, in their antiquated game section(they have the paper slips to take up for a copy of the game(s) you want), I found a lone beat up copy of the WM 21 guide.

It came up a penny when I went to the register with it and the clerk IMMEDIATELY lost his spine and own will to think for himself. He called a co-worker first, then a manager and, you guessed it, DENIED. I hate trying to wrangle any guides I may find at TRU from them.

Also, in that same shopping center area, it looks like they're building a Best Buy store.

Anyway, anyone who may want to either buy or trade for the Castlevania guide, PM me. I'm looking for one or two things only though.

LOL - i took a random trip with a bud to Nebraska to find some penny guides. Found a copy of Madden 2005 at TRU and brought it up to buy ( LOLOL ).
DENIED! LOL! Oh well, only $250 worth of gas. LOL.

man, that sux! Having found a penny guide only to be denied by them bastards! WTF!!! :bomb:

Today, I went to a few EB/GameStops in the middle of nowhere and found a FF VIII guide! I knew it must be penny guide, took it to the cashier, he scaned it and told the manager look ...... the manager looked at me, , and said it's free, just give it to him. :bouncy:

I love CAG!!!

LOL Pook

I just have to laugh, as I haven't gone on any long trips in at least a little while.

And, it was her idea to 'get out of the area', not mine. I basically repeated what she used to say about going all that way for nothing, etc, etc. Thing is, she wanted to see State College area. And see it we did, but the thing is, she isn't the best driver and wanted to park someplace and get out and walk around the town a bit.

Then again, I'm not the best driver either, but still, I'm sure we could've found a parking lot to park in and managed to walk around there a bit at least.

She DID fill up prior to our jaunt and yeah, she had to put more in before we headed back, but it was HER idea.

My days of hoarding guides are over. Mind you, if I find a copy of a guide that may be worth a few bucks on here or elsewhere, I may still grab it. But other than that, any guides I grab are for the personal collection.

And Asgardian, you found a FFVIII guide? What state are you in, I may take a 'random trip' out to clean out your EB/GS stores.

LMFAO j/k Seriously though, nice find, I wish I could find copies of The Suffering and Silent Hill 1 and 2's guides. I'm still kicking myself in the butt over trading away SH1's guide to EB for like a buck in 2001 or so, when it just fetched $33 on Ebay not too long ago.

Is that really a penny? I see them at EBs alot...

I'm in CA, there's 3 GSs, 2 EBs, and 2 GCs near me, but they never have any penny guides. In fact, I think I've found penny guide in one of the GS before but they told me the price was $15.99 because that nasty store manager didn't want to sell it to me... :(

Anyway, I guess it is really up to the cashier rather you can get them or not.

Yeah, finding the FF VIII guide was awesome, the guide came out in 1999, so that means it could have been sitting in that GS for the past 7 years waiting for me to rescure it! :bouncy:

PS: Off topic, and might not be news to anyone, but I went to a GameQuest store for the first time yesterday, and I found they have Shadow Hearts (original) for PS2 for $30. That game is pretty hard to find, and they have new copies...

That's the TRU near where I live and please tell me you didn't just dis the paper slip system ;) That's hilarious that you mentioned that Wrestlemania guide, in the black rack with maybe some Nintendo Powers & Racket & Clank Deadlock guides IIRC. I noticed it afew days after the drop months ago as it was the only guide they missed pulling, it was stuck pretty good I'm thinking that you probably had to use the Jaws of Life to get it out :D I noticed it and after seeing how bad it was stuck I got a good laugh out of it and mentioned it to my one friend that works at that TRU (not R Zone though) I've never been denied guides at this store before, last time I got some guides the manager came over for something and made a comment about how I beat them to the guides. Do you remember the name or what the employee, manager looked like? You must be legendary for this in PA, NY and NJ like how they have a picture of Al Bundy and it says not to take a check from this man only it's you and not to sell this guy any pennied out items to you :) Did you actually have a look at the games? They still have afew decent clearance games floating around at this TRU.

Which store did you find the Castlevania DoS guide at? I know it wasen't the EBgames near me as they are actually are pretty good at pulling the guides the only thing I've found over the last year was an Advance Wars DS guide that magically re-appeared somehow afew weeks after it was discontinued at EBgames.

I didn't see them on the front page, and I don't feel like looking through pages and pages of stuff to see if someone already mentioned them so here goes:

A few penny guides I secured at a local TRU:

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones (GBA)
Pikmin 2 (GCN)
Star Fox Assault (GCN)

Guys, I have a four day weekend coming up next weekend, so I hope to get a re-done penny guide thread done over that weekend.

Plus, don't forget that we're coming up to the beginning of a month in a week, so BB should be pennying guides out, if they follow pattern.

I scored a ton of guides yesterday at 4 different EB/Gamestops. Check my sig for all the new loot FT/FS! Just about everything that is listed as new is what I scored.

If it follows that the guides that were $9.99 before they were pennied out, the following should be the ones that get pennied out next month:

Sims 2 (Windows)
Need For Speed: Most Wanted
SW Battlefront II
DOA4

That's it for the guides that are $9.99 on the BB.com website right now.

Last drop the pile they stacked on a cart of penny guides had DOA4 on it - I didn't try bringing that one up because no one mentioned it was a penny. Last time I was at the store it was back on the shelf so im shooting for that one =]

I believe it was the one in the Nittany Mall out towards State College more where I found the Castlevania guide.

I just kind of did a double take and couldn't believe it was just sitting there, wedged between some regular sized guides.

And the one clerk at the Circuit City by the Lycoming Mall mentioned someone who 'came in with a list' saying they needed 'this game, this game, this game' from it.

And those games all turned out to be the $8.96 4th of July sale ones.

They then went on to complain about people leaking these lists onto the net, etc etc.

I found it to be quite funny, as I was trying to not just blurt out 'im one of those internet shoppers too'.

Anyway, are you out near Berwick, because I don't wanna head down that way, if the Kmart there is cleaned out.

Have you noticed if the same principle applies to GR/EB?

I think the PSP version of the LCS guide will be next to penny out at EB/GS, as many of my local stores have copies of it in stock still.

I stopped at a GC tonight, they had both versions of the LCS guide in the back.

Sadly, I couldn't convince the clerk to let me have one of the old PSP only versions.

My gamestops and TRU stores have recently begun cracking down on penny guides so i'm always willing to trade/buy rpg guides.

Whats hilarious though is my best buy loves penny guides. They put a $.01 sticker on em and stick em on a table for people to take. Last time I went there employee's ended up snagging a few guides for themselves that they wanted.

I'm surprised That they had a Castlevania guide still at the Nittany Mall if it didn't get pulled as I'm sure there are afew CAGs around State College. I haven't been to that store for ages though myself since it's about an hour and a half away.

Did they pull all/some of the $8.96 games at the Circuit City by the Lycoming Mall? When I was last in Friday morning they still had everything on the floor with the PS2 games marked correctly & not in a bin. They were mixed in with the other $20 or less games. I was gonna stop by tomarrow or Thursday but I may just wait till this Sunday if they pulled the clearance games.

I live in Williamsport about 10 minutes from the Lycoming Mall, you didn't mention the K-Mart in Williamsport so I'm guessing that you didn't stop by but it's pretty barren. I stopped by last week and they didn't have F Zero GP Legends, Wing Commander Prophecy or Soul Calibur II anymore which were the only super cheap clearance games I remembered seeing afew weeks before. I'm guessing that they tagged them down to the correct prices and people actually bought them :) They haven't had alot of the good stuff in months though as they actually seem to do alright selling video games at this K Mart since it the closest place around that sells games for alot of people in Williamsport.
has prince of persia the two throne been peniied out in eb/gs?
Oh, boy. I certainly hope so!!!

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but when I checked the prices on Silent Hill 2 and C-12 at the Kmart at the Laurel Mall in Hazleton, I also had them check the prices of 3 guides I saw sitting out there.

They all came up $6 something each. Wario Ware and two other guides were out there for the taking.

And FOne, I checked the Williamsport Kmart while I was out towards State College last weekend and saw how barren it was. And, as far as I could tell, most of the games that're part of the $8.96 sale are still out there at the CC by the Lycoming Mall.

They had copies of the 'deluxe' Marc Ecko game stickered right, as well as what seemed like a whole section devoted to JUST the $8.96 games.

I was half tempted to grab an Eyetoy Groove(w/camera), which was also marked at $8.96, since I've had no luck finding the Eyetoy standalone locally.

I may have to hope that my local CC has alot of the $8.96 games when it comes time for the sale, as there are about 3-5 I want from the list as of now.

But, knowing me, I'll get there too late in the day and poof, all the good games will be gone.

They had those Getting Up LEs sitting their marked correctly for awhile. I think I might be the only person that bought one and I only bought it to trade in at FYE for something else I wanted :)
