CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
If it follows that the guides that were $9.99 before they were pennied out, the following should be the ones that get pennied out next month:

Sims 2 (Windows)
Need For Speed: Most Wanted
SW Battlefront II
DOA4

That's it for the guides that are $9.99 on the BB.com website right now.
I'm going to be a little embarrased buying the DOA4 guide, especially if there are people behind me in line... :/

I'm just guessing, though from the last couple of drops, the guides that were pennied out were $9.99 @ BB.com the month before they were pennied.

They've done it twice before, so I'm hoping they stick to the same behavior. Have someone at the front price-check it, which they can do without ringing it out as a transaction, which I've done before with guides in the past.
I'm going to be a little embarrased buying the DOA4 guide, especially if there are people behind me in line... :/
Never be ashamed of your cheapness!!!
I'm going to be a little embarrased buying the DOA4 guide, especially if there are people behind me in line... :/
How do they know that you weren't expecting the guide to be full price?

When it scans for a cent, say: "Oh, well, what a plllleasant surprise! Have a nice day!"

Or something not so lame. ;)
Does GR/Blockbuster ever penny out guides? I saw some older ones at a BB today including Mario Party 5.
yes and no

they do but we currently have no informants there

can't promise but could say with most certainty that if you found that at a blockbuster and it does not have any special used or other tag on it that it would be clearanced. The cashier may just give it to you but be on the look out for a odd face, price overiding or just plain out denial/sorry can't sell it. If it happens just say ok and walk away as its not worth the trouble but just do one of the oldest to start to test the waters. If it works out good grab somemore if the store is not busy and go from there. if it works out bad leave the others to try with another employee another day. good luck.

I saw Resident Evil: Outbreak 2 at a GR...that one is surely old enough to be pennied. It's hard to believe that with all these Blockbusters in the country, not one CAG works there and can check a few guide prices.

I know Blockbuster is sometims a little more strict on their field destroy policies than some other chains...but it really depends on the manager. If you have a cool manager, like at my GR, he actually lets the employees take stuff home that's supposed to be field destroyed. I went to another one and was talking to a guy there...and he said his stupid bitch of a manager is on a power trip and does everything by the book...including running DVDs and games through a shredder to field destroy them. What a waste. At the very least, Blockbuster should donate that stuff...they get the same tax writeoff they get when they destroy it.

There ARE employees that work at Blockbuster that are part of CAG. I can think of 3 off the top of my head, myself being one. Since working there, I have not seen any guides penny out, although I've only been there for 2 months. However, I know things do penny out, however, I think it happens AFTER the field destroys are supposed to happen. I am not 100% sure of this though, and will not know until it actually happens. I (or others) will keep everyone posted as to when this happens.

Also, if you do find a penny guide, it depends on who's ringing you up as to whether or not they'll sell it to you. Most likely a regular CSR will sell it no problem, but a Store Manager or Assistant Manager will probably say they can't. Just some FYI.
LOL - i took a random trip with a bud to Nebraska to find some penny guides. Found a copy of Madden 2005 at TRU and brought it up to buy ( LOLOL ).
DENIED! LOL! Oh well, only $250 worth of gas. LOL.
I doubt you are serious.

They're not Optical, they were busting me for going here n there looking for games and what not. Although, that is a bit curtailed for now. Mind you, I may go to Lycoming Mall area tomorrow, since their Circuit City had most of the $8.96 games on the shelf still.

Eh, Ebay wouldn't even consider that excessive, especially since he ships UPS Ground. What would that run...$10-12? Gotta be more than Media Mail, right?
Yeah, I noticed that one too. When the hell did Kameo get pennied?

Dave
Who knows...the OP has been updated for Best Buy since February. I can't keep up.

LOL And to think, I thought when I was guide hoarding, that I was bad.

All you see are stacks and stacks of guides in the 2-3 pics on that auction. Thing is, there's only a few of some of the bigger name ones, like Halo 2 and San Andreas(from the pics anyway).

Hell, when I was looking for a cheap copy of San Andreas' guide, I couldn't find one.

I gotta laugh though, at people on here reporting that Ebayer for 'excessive charges'. How do you even know it was that one person who amassed all those guides? They could've had a deal with some employees(like I should've when I thought I could do the Ebay thing).

Honestly, if I couldn't find any of those guides and grab at least one, then their auction might be a good thing for me. Hell, 10 guides for 21 bucks, that's like $2 a pop. And thats not even before taking into account what it costs for shipping alone. I doubt that Ebayer is making much money at all.

Well, I ventured into new territory yesterday. I decided to got to a Kmart in White Plains, NY to see if I could get any decent stuff. I ended up getting the poor guy in Electronics in trouble because he brought me into the stockroom to see their games. They had pulled most of their games to the back because they had no room in the cases (which they did have plenty of). Anyway I left the store to find an EB Games (that had so many guides that I thought I was there 4-5 months ago! lol)a couple stores down in the plaza. Now I've discovered a new approach to getting penny guides. I grabbed a huge stack of them and boldly went to the register. The clerk was like "Are you serious?" I said with a smile "yup, I think they're at a magical price" So he starts scanning them and was kinda surprised yet kind of not. The other guy was like "yeah we need to scan some guides one of these days" I'd post pics but I've no idea how to since it needs a URL of the image and it does not have one as it's on my hard drive. If anyone can tell me how to do it I'll gladly show my goods!
Hes not going to make that much off of those things, especially since he is shipping via UPS. It's not worth the waste of floor space IMO.
It's a total waste. Think about it, how much time did he spend on gas to get to Best Buy & back (with that many, more likely multiple Best Buys), eBay fees, and all the time and effort it took to go there, buy all the guides, haul them to his car, haul them into his house/apartment, etc. He's probably making about $1/hour for his work!
That's something I'm planning to fix this weekend.

AFAIK, Kameo hasn't been pennied at BB, that I know of. Easy enough thing to check. BB site says it hasn't:

Sorry all I just don't have time between family and work. Shrike has been ever so gracious as to offer to take up this endevour even with all his other CAG responsibilities. I hope to be able to do this again in the future I just don't know when i'll have the time. Keep em coming all. Fragmented is better than nothing.
Look at this jackasses Best Buy hoard of guides:

You can see the yellow Best Buy $.01 yellow stickers on them. Looks like he wiped out half the Best Buy stores in California.
What an ass.

Not only does the auction show piles of guides, but several shown are not actually part of the auction!

It is auctions and pictures like these that will make the publishers ask BB/EB/TRU to NOT sell penny guides in the future.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted and DOA 4 guides are no longer available on the BestBuy site. Do drops happen on the first of the month or on a particular day(the first Monday e.g.)?

I have a question guys. WHen I went to my EB and asked for a price check on a listed penny guide, the guy said just look at the price on the back. So, does this mean that he will override the .01 price with the normal price on the back cover?

It usually happens on a Monday... they could have pulled them down early? I wonder if we can get confirmation on it.

I'll buy any extras anyone gets, so send me a PM if guides dropped.

That Nintendogs mini guide that was on the site is gone now, too.

I have a few guides on ebay now. Mainly guides i've had available for more then 3 months that I havent been able to trade away here. Same thing but man I did not have a huge as pile like that guy did.

Hate when people go to the store and buy all the guides. When I go i usually grab 2-3 copies of the guides for trading and leave others for anyone else who might want.

If I even go to the store now, I'll grab 1 for myself and 1 to trade.. I used to grab 3 and 4 to trade with CAG's but that plan backfired as now I have a ton of guides no one wants.

Each time BB or anyone else drops guides, I just trade for the guides now... this pile is getting smaller and smaller, and I don't have to hunt to 4 different stores to grab guides.

I got every Best Buy drop last time just by trading / buying... worked out nicely.

Thats basically what I do Roufuss. I have to work a little harder since all the gamestops, EB's and TRU's by me have stopped selling penny guides so it takes a bit more work to get the guides from them.

Well, TRU generally just has stuff that's at Best Buy / EB and they penny it out way later, so I don't even bother with TRU anymore. Though I did trade for a Four Swords guide (and even gave the guy two extra guides because I was late!).

But yea, with EB / GS, I've gotten into the habit of buying the guides I KNOW I'll want and that will be in demand when they become a penny... mainly RPG guides. I'll take advantage of sales, deals, that extra 20% off when you buy the game, anything I can use because I know these things are impossible to find almost when they penny out these days.

This would be the way to sell them (lots of a few good ones with a bunch of junk . . . but this guy is a first-class jerk.

The size of those piles is incredible.

Plus, he could take the time to isolate the ones in the sale.

If he put a correct picture of what he's selling, he'd be less of an asshole. Though, in any case, he's still an asshole.

I'd go today, if I could, though I'm busy for the rest of the day. I'll see if I can try to go tomorrow and do some recon.

If someone else could as well, it would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I did with the KH2 guide, since I figured it would never penny out at EB or GS, and at half-price on Overstock seemed good enough to me.

Don't ask for a price check...just go to buy the guide (preferably with a non-guide purchase). If it doesn't ring up a penny or the cashier overrides it...say you don't want the guide and that you had heard it was on clearance.

This is one of the auctions i am doing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280003524885&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=018

You can see why those guides didn't sell/trade.

I think i have about 70 guides left that I still have to list and most of those were from my gamestop before they had to stop selling them. My gamestop had gotten orders to dispose of all the penny guides during inventory which happened to be the next business day from when I went there looking so the manager loaded me up and INSISTED that I take them all.

also when you go to buy the guide make sure to watch the cashiers face. The look on their face when they see it ring up at $.01 is almost better then the guides themselves

Can anybody tell me what guides are going to be pennied out? I'll get you free guides if you do lol. I've been reading these threads for ages and never ever figured it out. Everytime I get a price check they tell me 14.99 or something like that. I can never find a pennied out guide. Please help me.

So based on how long (read: never) Animal Crossing for GC is taking to penny out, I assume that AC: WW would be the best guide to choose for my free guide for renewing Nintendo Power (over New Super Mario Bros and Metroid Prime: Hunters)?

Remember that 7/4 falls on a Tuesday so there is a possibility that BB corporate will take Monday off and the guides might not drop until Wednesday. Just a heads up in case they don't come up 1¢ on Monday.

jericho we don't know. Just keep checking this thread and we post whenever we find guides that are pennied out. generally when a guide disapears from BB's website its going to be pennied out but its not the case. What most people do is have the stores scan prices on older guides whenever they go and post the results if any are $.01

I'm not sure how much renewals through Nintendo cost, but I just wanted to make sure you knew you could pick up another year of Nintendo Power for $4.69 at bestdealmagazines.com. With the JULY4SAVE coupon you can knock off another 18% to come in at $3.85. The shopping cart doesn't like IE6 on my PC though so you may need Firefox. While there's no guide included, it is a cheap alternative if you want to continue to hold out for a drop.

Yeah I am a gametz user, u can see link to tradelist in my sig.

FYI botticus I believe the animal crossing guide WAS pennied out at kmart a long time ago.

I don't think it was pennied out at K-Mart. They had afew GameCube guides that were free if you bought the game (Wario World, Star Fox Adventures etc.) Some stores didn't know what to do with the guides especially if they didn't have the games in stock but still had guides left over and if they scaned the guides I don't think they had a price in the system making things even more confusing for an employee that dosen't know what to do :)

It was pennied out. if you do a search on front page you can see its $.01 under k-mart. It was also pennied out at EB.

I know its pennied out because my k-mart still has 3 behind the counter they won't sell. They have been there for 8 months.
