CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

Tried to pick up Freedom Fighters and TMNT at CompUSA. Both rang up full price.

Did pick up Spyro: Year of Dragon for 0.88 at CompUSA. Sux that it's so YMMV.

Also found some other older guides like Drakan, FF VIII, RE Outbreak, and others at a local garage sale. These and others are up for trade. Trade list is in my sig. PM if interested.

There are now only 25 guides listed in the guides section of BestBuy.com. Any idea on what may have been removed and/or added? That tricked me before, where the total amount of guides on the site stayed the same but they had actually taken a down a few and replaced them with others.

PS: Anyone know why there are two of the seemingly same guide for Oblivion listed on on BB.com? Also why does the rating list nudity? Is it because of the mod/hack you can do?
Dropped yesterday at GameStop.

Ninja Gaiden Black for Xbox
Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects
Ratchet Deadlocked.
Can anyone else confirm these?
Can anyone else confirm these?
I'll try and confirm tommorow. I have a good friend who works at EB and he doesn't mind me bringing a bunch of guides/games to check prices on so hopefully there will be others.

Managed to find a Half-Life: Raising the Bar hardcover book at Gamestop today. Anybody interested in it. I would like to trade it for RPG guide(s) mainly, but if you don't have any, let me see what you have and we'll go from there.

I spoke to my friend at Gamecrazy the other day. All the guides listed in the OP are now at .00 value, no longer at .01 which means there should be a new list of guides dropping soon. They said it's been quite awhile since they got one so they're due anytime now. They also could not give me any of the guides that they had because they're still in their inventory until they get the OK to destroy them. They said they'll hold them all for me whenever that happens. :) I'll try and get the new list from them whenever it comes down.
I just have to ask, where did you get those Dead or Alive and Need for Speed guides? I mean seven?! That's usually around the largest amount a Best Buy gets of a single guide. Did you take them all?
The answer to your question is two-fold.

I got them at various Best Buy stores.

However, no, I didn't take them all.

I stopped back at one BB today, and there were still 6 or 7 Need For Speed guides still sitting there.

Here's my theory on the subject (and I don't believe I'm alone on this):

I would rather pick up most of them than let Best Buy throw them away.

Second, and more important to me, I started VERY late on the CAG guide trading thread. I didn't have any guides except what I've found within the last couple of weeks.

I needed to have something to trade, and if I only picked up two of each (one for me, and one to trade) then I would only have had two guides to trade.

Hope that answers your question.

NFS:MW is by FAR the most common penny guide I've seen in the various BB near me. The BB nearest me has a pile of at least 20+. It seems a bit 'worthless' for trade though, cannot see anyone would need to trade for it really... I've got 3 copies anyone want to trade? :)
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but Indigo Prophecy just dropped to a penny at EB/GS. Been waiting for this one a long time.
One person said they got one but several others said they checked and it was still regular price. Did you get one (or extras) or did you just have it scanned?

I agree. Better to somewhat hoard guides than let them be tossed (which is what stores are doing more of). During one BB drop, I "liberated" guides from a cart that was clearly heading to the back of the store. At a TRU drop in 2005 I also "saved" a shitload that were in a shopping cart about to be destroyed.

Plus the trades don't add much cost. If I can get a guide via trade for $2 . . . I'm happy.

Not a penny but I did find Star Ocean Second Story for $3 at used bookstore . . . already sold for $50 on Amazon :whistle2:(
One person said they got one but several others said they checked and it was still regular price. Did you get one (or extras) or did you just have it scanned?
I picked it up saturday and was told it was on the new penny list that came out that day (there were a few others - forget what else exactly but they had all been recent BB drops (except for Indigo Prophecy.)) It had been pulled and was stacked seperately with the other penny guides but they didn't bother scanning it - maybe another CAG could try their local EB/GS to confirm?

Stopped by 2 different GameStop stores on the way home. At the first one, I found a free copy of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. The second one rewarded me with a free copy of Ninja Gaiden: Black. Both are up for trade.

I understand. "I got them at various Best Buy stores." I figured that as a possiblilty. Just make sure you leave them there for a while before taking them all. ;) Although I think you may have a harder time trying to trade those, as they are very common. :\

I checked one of my GS's today and can confirm Indigo Prophecy is a .01. It seems that the best possibilities are games tagged at $9.99. I saw Drakengard 2 and Perfect Dark Zero tagged at this price but wasn't able to check them. I had to put on an Oscar-worthy performance to get the Indigo Prophecy guide.:)

I found a weird occurance today. There was a guide, I can't remember which one but I noticed it was old. So I took it off the shelf and first thing I found was that it was sealed in plastic, as were several others on the shelf and it had an old $0.99 tag on it with "GENERIC GUIDE (Do Not Buy)" on it. Thinking maybe it was an old stock of something?

I just went to my local GS, got Ninja Gaiden: Black and Indigo Prophecy! :bouncy:

Going to keep NGB, but Indigo Prophecy will be up for trade! CML!

Thanks CAG! :)

i went to my gamestop yesterday (yes the same one where the manager told me to 'get the hell out of' his store) Picked up an extra copy of FEAR guide for one penny and he told me he'd give it to me this time but Gamestop store policies will be going through a change and any guides that ring up one penny will automatically be charged full price for. I think he's full of shit personally just because Delaware gamestops are horrible like that.

Actually, that was what the stickers on the Stubbs guides I saw a while back said, minus the 'do not buy' part.

So, maybe those were just older guides that they had re marked to .99. BTW, those Stubbs(and SSX ON TOUR) guides WERE .99 a WHILE ago, like last summer I think.

I remember Shiningslade saying something about getting an SSX or Stubbs for .01 recently though.

Well, I KNOW they WERE marked .99 a while back. I would say it had to be at least 3-4 months ago, if not longer. I guess sometimes I have no sense of time though. But I DO remember buying a copy of the guide for Stubbs when it was COLD out now and it WAS .99. SO :booty: !!

My EB has Stubb's guides, but they're still marked full price :(

Also, there's only 25 guides on BB.com now. Did 1 drop?
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but Indigo Prophecy just dropped to a penny at EB/GS. Been waiting for this one a long time.
Thanks Johnny. Stopped by local gs, and eb. They've actually been much better about picking up their penny guides, but I did find a single Indigo Prophecy for my use. The guy said 'Dont' worry about it', and let me have it. As I was walking out, he yelled 'You got lucky'! Yes, of course I did...except luck had nothing to do with it:applause: !!!!!

If any can grab an extra Indigo and/or Marvel guide, I'm interested. My guide list isn't posted right now but will be tonight. My EB shot me down. He gave me the usual "we throw them away line" - which I expected - but what really made me mad was that he lied & said they go down to $5 before they're trashed. I wanted to tell him "No, because if you marked them down to $5 I'd buy them - they go from $15-20 to trash." :whistle2:|

So what exactly has been pennied out as of recently at Best Buy and GameStop? I haven't quite been keeping up with this thread.

Oh, and also, what exactly has been pennied out as of recently at CompUSA?

I didn't try extra copies of Indigo Prophecy, Marvel or Ratchet Deadlocked, since I wanted to increase my chances of getting the Indigo guide. I'll stop by the other store, in my neighborhood and see if they have them. There, they are not as strict as in other places, as long as you're buying an item of some sort...any price.

Wasn't able to get any Indigo or Marvel guides (yet), but one of the guys at the EB down the street informed me that there were quite a few other guides that dropped including Final Fantasy X (which I was able to grab one of- for trade). It would be nice if someone from EB/GS could get us the full list as we are definitely missing out on some quality guides here (according to the EB dude).

I got lucky tonight, was down in Wilkes-Barre, PA for a quick shopping trip with family and stopped in the Gamestop at the Arena Hub Plaza. They had a single copy of the Indigo guide in stock AND I snagged a mislabeled used first party Dual Shock 2 for $7.99. A $12 savings over their usual price of $19.99.

The clerk groaned because I took out my Edge card too, to get my 10% off on TOP of the cheap price. After tax, it cost me less than $8 total and I was out of there.

I then stopped at the EB at Wyoming Valley Mall(5 mins away) and 'liberated' another copy of the Indigo guide AND a PRISTINE Ninja Gaiden Black guide.

I didn't find any of the other guides that dropped at EB/GS in either store though.

Good job, now trade me the extra Indigo Guide? LOL!

Actually, I had them check Drakengard 2 at the Gamestop I nabbed the first copy of Indigo Prophecy at. It still came up full price though. There were a couple other decent candidates for the .01 drop though, including one of the Sims guides and that pesky True Crime:Streets of LA guide, which my local EB/GS stores have marked down to $7.99 for whatever reason.

What I laugh at though, is that while other more 'common' guides drop, ones that have already long since disappeared at Best Buy are STILL on the shelves at EB/GS. Ones like the original Kingdom Hearts, San Andreas and God Of War.

However, I guess its because these games are insanely popular and will still sell copies of the guide with the game from time to time.

One guide that just doesn't want to drop to .01 at either place though, is HALO 2. That one has been $5-10 forever at BB and EB/GS.

Is Halo 2 pennied at BB or any other stores???

I went to a GS, found a mint condition IP, took it to the counter with a couple of 'decoy items'... after the cashier ring up the price, she said "sorry we cannot sell you this guide....." fuck :bomb:

Not extremely exciting, but I picked up these at CompUSA for $.88 each:

Tekken Tag Tournament (up for trade)
Spyro: Year of the Dragon (up for trade)

(and this one I found very interesting indeed)

a sealed copy of Star Wars Episode I: Racer for the N64 (up for trade)

What was cool was that they had a TON of marked down games that they seemed in a hurry to get rid of, because I had 7 in my hands, and regardless of the individual prices, they sold them to me for $4.98 each!

Again, nothing exciting, but in my opinion, all worthy of a 5-spot:

XBOX
Lord of the Rings: Third Age
Shenmue II
CSI
Sphinx: Cursed Mummy

PS2
Music Maker: Deluxe Edition

GCN
1080 Avalanche
NFL Street

Someone came into my work today and made us scan the FFX guide, it was still $14.99

To that person, your welcome for the Ratchet Deadlocked, Medal of Honor Euro Assault and Matrix Path of Neo penny guides, whenever you come into the store be sure to ask me if we have any penny guides, as nobody else I work with will give them out.

Really? That is really odd. Hmmmm... perhaps what I got was a fluke then?? :bouncy: Anyways, it'd be nice if at least one more person could get a price check on the FFX guide and see what comes up. Would save me a trip since I know of at least 3 more EB/GS around me that have them (and I will be trying out tomorrow if noone else reports before then).

I got a price check on it from my old boss today when I stopped in at my local GS and ransacked the guide racks. It's still full price.

I did find Republic Commando, European Assault, Starfox: Assault, Marvel: Rise of the Imperfects, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect and Star Wars: Battlefront guides, though. All up for trade.

I went to one of my local BB today to see if they forgot to pull any penny guides and they didn't have a single guide anywhere in the store. I looked all over the videogame and PC section, and in one of the CD isles they had a bunch of videogame accessories in.

Okie doke. Looks like I just got lucky :D . Glad to know. On a lighter note, love your avatar dustboogie!

The Best Buy I went to moved them all close to the counter. They also actually labeled some penny guides - I got 2x Metal Gear Acid 2 and a copy of the Final Fantasy IV Advance guide.

My local GS and a nearby Best Buy appear to have not tossed a single strategy guide in months. I printed out a list of all the more recent drops and I'm gonna head out today and see what I can score.

EDIT: Okay, I found a (mostly) sealed copy of the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Limited Edition guide.. it's hardcover and was tagged at $29.99 (got it for $.01). Is this worth much?

possibly. I can tell you that it would probably be desired by CAG's here. Me being one of them.

That sounded too much like what happened to me yesterday to be a coincident... If you are that dude who gave me the stack of penny guides on top of the Matrix guide, and you missed the Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, then let me thank you again, YOU ROCK MATE!!! :bouncy: I’ve PM you.

Hey maybe we need to have a secret CAG hand-sign so that we can flash to people we think might be a fellow CAG! Lol…

Anyway, to the dude who got FFX, I asked for it to be scanned in 3 different GS yesterday, and none of them were penny. In fact, if you check the GS site, you’d see it is still listed at $14.99. Unless you found the LE… then it would make sense… either way, you were lucky mate!

Okay, so I started my day meeting my angel who granted me four penny guides, three of which were still sealed. I moved on to try to find a CompUSA, got lost and ended up in a TRU, found Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stone for $15, and managed to grab my first penny guide at a TRU: Zelda 4 swords and MGS: Twin Snakes! Ended the day with another Ninja Gaiden Black and Indigo Prophecy (sealed). Freaken awesome day I tell ya! :bouncy:

Adding to trade list:
Ratchet Deadlocked (sealed)
Medal of Honor Euro Assault (sealed)
Matrix Path of Neo (very minor wear)
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (seal) – I might want to keep it
Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures – I might want to keep it
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snake
Ninja Gaiden Black
Indigo Prophecy (sealed) – Trade ONLY

NEW SEALED GAME:
Fire Emblem: The sacred Stones

Well, went guide hunting today and came home with... well not much. After visiting 6 EB/GS's I found 1 penny guide- Marvel Nemesis. I had FFX scanned at 2 of them and indeed it came up full price... oh well. Eventually it'll happen for real. Anyways, I also managed to get a couple Auto Assault guides from BB, but that's about it for me. Anyone got an extra Indigo Prophecy they wanna trade?
