07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

Snagged a Liberty City, Godfather and Kameo guide today. They had a couple more Godfathers but that one didn't even ring up at 1 cent, when she scanned it some sort of msg came on her screen and she just threw the guide in my bag without it showing up on my receipt so I think i just got lucky getting that one.

All the stores in my area were cleaned out already or pulled.

Manage to find some guides hidden though. Picked up one of each of the following for trade.

Liberty City Stories
The Godfather

Also have Psychonauts and Siren guides for trade.

CML and pm if interested
the city of villians binder-guide looking thing is also on the best buy penny drop list, but this store doesn't have it.
Oh really? Mine had some i think.... though the guide gets horrid reviews on amazon and i don't even have the game so prob not worth the extra trip back, unless someone here specifically wants one....if thats the case PM or something.

Is this is the complete new list of Penny Guides at Best Buy

Titan Quest
GTA LCS ps2/psp
Kameo
Auto Assault
City of Villians (Binder Guide)
Ghost Recon AW

Is the Godfather Guide pennied out for PS2/Xbox or not?
If their are anyothers let everyoe know. See ya Later
Is the Godfather Guide pennied out for PS2/Xbox or not?
the old one is pennied out:

the new one is not pennied out:

I think I know what happens to penny guides (along with returns, defective crap, etc...). People can buy lots (bundles) of random stuff from BestBuy which they turn around and sell at flea markets and stuff. I saw a bunch of stuff with BB return receipts still attached along with pennied guides with full priced stickers on them at the monthly computer parking lot sale at the northrup grumman parking lot in manhattan beach. Was a bunch of 'maybe' defective merchandise and radom stuff (almost like a Bag of Crap sale sight unseen).

Just thought I would add my observations as to where penny guides disappear from shelves and end up.
the old one is pennied out:
Is there any actual different content as to these two guides?

beats me. my guess is: probably the only difference is that the newer version includes psp controls & x360 controls in the explanations of how to do this 'n' that. basically a quickie editing job?

Got 2 Kameo guides up for trade. If you want to purchase instead, please take a look at my list, and pick two or more. I can also get any of the PC penny guides (recent ones), just pm me.

Didn't bother checking the local Best Buys because I've had terrible luck with recent drops. If anyone has a Kameo guide for trade and wants something from my list, let me know!

Would anyone sell me any of these guides? I'd prefer to get more than a couple at once, if anyone has them.
(All PC)

Age of Empires III
Age of Mythology/Expansion
Black and White 2
Darwinia (?)
Dawn of War
Far Cry
Freedom Force/Vs the Third Reich
Half-Life 2 and any other source game (CS:Source, DoD: Source, HL2E2, HL)
The Movies
Oblivion
Prey
The Sims 2
Warcraft III

Thanks

HEy heads up to all when I was at work yesterday we got a sheet of paper tellin us to pull the Half-Life 2, driver:parallel lines, madden 2006 from our shelves. Don't know if their pennied out or what. We usually just write them off and toss them. Theis was at the polaris Ohio Circuit city by the way.

Does anyone else feel like penny guide hunting is dying?

I was looking at my shelf, pulling guides for trade and stuff, and I realized that I had a shitload of guides from two or so years ago and how easy it was to get them, and how nobody cared and the cashiers were either amused or didn't care, and the guides would sit on the shelf for weeks after they pennied.

Now, these days, stores are pulling them ASAP and giving people this incredible hassle when they find them. New drops at Best Buy used to be a time of scrambling, people would pull big hauls, but now it's met with lackluster attitude because everyone's BB pulled the guides already.

We don't even hear about EB / GS drops anymore, if they even happen, and TRU is the same way BB is.

Did we at CAG cause this? I mean, over time companies had to have gotten wise of the huge amount of people pulling 1 cent guides from their store. I mean, this was my favorite pasttime on CAG and it seems it's an art that's slowly dying out. All the local BB's pull the guides before they even open now, even the ones who NEVER did such a thing.

Hell, I buy the RPG guides I want at EB / GS for full price now because I realize once it's pennied out, I don't have a shot in hell anymore of getting the guide, through my own methods or through CAG, since other CAG's are having just as much of a hassle.

What is everyone else's thoughts on this? It just seems the glory day of guide hunting is pretty much dead, when the only reason you didn't get a penny guide is because someone beat you to them, not because of stores pulling them all before they open.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. Its getting harder and harder to get penny guides. Its only a matter of time until we get shut off completely. People with the most success are the one's that work at these store or know people that do. Its not just CAG though. My friend's been getting penny guides well before this site. It does make it easier though, which is why they are being pulled so quickly. At my BB, they only pull the videogame guides, and leave the PC game guides. Pretty soon, they'll be pulling those too.

My BB does that too, as well as other ones... I'm thinking maybe the people who do Media don't necessarily do PC stuff, and that's for the PC section people? It's the only way I can explain the inconsistency.

Hell, I know someone who works at BB, and I still didn't get a Kameo guide, so it's becoming even harder to even get them out of the store.

I feel as though we already have been shut off completely.

I'm just hoping that when Animal Crossing Wild World and Kingdom Hearts 2 penny out, I will be able to snag out.

I agree, they have become harder to get. BB were always my sure things (since I have had little to no luck with the Ebs and GSs around here) but now they are starting to pull them. The only reason I got a kameo was becasue I asked a guy about it and he was cool and went in back and got me one. Fortuantely for me they still had penny guides out from months ago...:D . But this may be a sign of trends to come...

Have you guys noticed that some of these stores just aren't carrying many guides? One BB that never pulls them has virtually no guides for sale except some sports ones. And a CC I went to today had no guides at all. I remember the good old days when GS had "used" guides for $.99.

I know I haven't seen much in the way of penny guides recently, though I know the BB's around here have been carrying less guides over the past few months. Maybe 6-8 different guides per store. I haven't been in an EB or GS in more than a month, though I don't think anyone's mentioned a drop there in at least as long.

I know I haven't found any of the last ones from BB, mainly because I think BB is pulling them early when they get below full retail. I did pick up the KH2 guide when Overstock had it on sale a few months back, and I picked up the Morrowind guide with a GGC, since I never expected that one to penny out. Besides that, somewhere along the way, I end up with them.

This time around, Kameo and Godfather have eluded me.

Do you know how to look up the locations for the Godfather guide?

Thanks!

It's funny, I started hunting for penny guides only a few months ago and have had relatively good luck getting them in my area, at least at BB, I've never really tried anywhere else. I've even ordered them online and picked up in store a couple times and have been finding plenty of the new pennied out ones the day they drop in price at BB. It seems like if you can't get there by noon of drop day though, they get pulled.

Of the many times I've bought them at BB, I have never been hassled by a clerk for purchasing them. In fact yesterday the girl just tossed the Godfather guide in my bag when it wouldn't ring up at all. Only once have I had a clerk mention the one penny thing and then she just went "hmmph" and put it in my bag. Maybe the BB employees in my area are just not that hip to the whole penny guide thing yet. Also, I've never tried buying just a penny guide, I always have at least one game, DVD or CD in my hand as well to purchase. Maybe that helps them not notice that the guides I'm buying are only one penny.

Randomly found a GR:AW guide in adddition to a Godfather guide at the local Best Buy.. both are up for trade.. I want Kameo or any number of guides off my want list, PM me with what you got!

I for one know that at my best buy, it can be a very difficult thing to attain penny guides, and i'm assuming its like this company wide. I used to work full time in the media department, so alot of the times i'd be the one coming in at 7:00 AM, and one of our first priorities whenever it occurred was to take the penny guides off the shelf. I worked at a small Best Buy, so the one other full timer in media was just as cool, so we always pulled the guides for ourselves. We didn't believe in throwing them out, so we always had to sneak them into the install bay and buy them back there. Its a company wide thing though, if you don't dispose of the guides like your supposed to, you can get in serious trouble. Unfortunately, i've switched over to car audio, so I don't have the leet access anymore. But with this recent pull they left it out back ready to toss, so I grabbed them all.

As for EB/gamestop, I went in there one day with a list of penny guides to search for, and a girl I used to work with asked me what I was doing. She was fairly new to EB, so she didn't even know what a penny guide was. Well, I had her search like 5 guides, and low and behold, they had them all out back. Apparently they had a 4-5 foot stack of old guides in their bathroom out back. I told her if she pulled all the penny ones for me, I'd give her 30 bucks. Few weeks later, she calls me and I bought like 45 guides off her for 30 bucks, all different.

My best buy is always a safe place for guides. I went yesterday and got Titans Quest, Auto Assault, GTA Liberty all for $.01 and all marked at $.01 too.

Course my EB/GS/TRU have been pretty lack luster lately.

Gah! my Trade list...it is gone! damnit. Strange, but oh well, now I just gotta type up my guides. Newest addition: Titan Quest.

QFT. ^_^

Seriously though, this has been a trend many of us had noticed. I for one loved the thrill of the hunt to be able to run out to BB and grab the guide for a game I have for a penny.

It was a fun ride while it lasted. Some stuff may fall through the cracks, but like you said, it isn't even close to what it used to be like just 6 months ago even. Always got a good chuckle when the stores would actually put up price tags for the penny guides. May have to resort to trying to predict the price drops, hiding guides around the store, and praying for a cool cashier.

wow. one of the last sticky threads. At this rate though I don't think it will much reason to remain sticky much longer... I think the reason guide hunting has become so sparse for so many of us is that Eb's, GS's and R zone's typically have the same faces and/or managers. At least they have for the most part locally for some time. Usually they are like no prob to start and usually I would buy a lot of games too so everyone is happy but with 9 or so different stores locally doesn't quite allow for that all the time and besides there is only so many games I want to play and even fewer that I have time for.

Over time they come to recognize you as the guide person and no longer seeing much profit in you just decide to pull them. I would not say guides are dead especially since there will be a ramp up for christmas and a Jan 15 or so clearence, but when a town gets to know you unless you can still spend money hand over fist then you get left behind... When I go way out of town I can come out of 70-80 percent of every store I walk into with at least 1 clearenced item but locally 10-20 % if that.

Basically if they can put a face to you its great to start but in the long run the more faceless you are the better...

kameo x3
gta liberty stories x2
Wait a second, Godfather was pennied? CRAP!!!! The one local BB had like 2-3 of the old guide last night and I didn't even THINK of having it PC'd again, since I thought only two guides dropped this month.

Oh and Roufuss, I think some of the BB guide pulling problems started occuring because of me in my major guide hoarding days, where I would 'clean out' a BB with 40-50 guides in stock from prior drops. LOL

As for EB/GS, I've found that the ratio for those stores is around 50/50 anymore, some are retentive and won't sell a guide for .01 no matter what, while others give you stacks of them for free.

Either way, whenever I get out today, I'm gonna go check the GF guide at BB, see if the old one DID penny, like I thought it would.

I checked my hiding spot for TR:Legend the other night n one of the %A#(&%(%&in' clerks must've found it and restocked it. I honestly think that stashing guides very WELL is the only way anyone is going to be getting penny guides pretty soon.
Basically if they can put a face to you its great to start but in the long run the more faceless you are the better...
I've decided to start wearing a different mask (a la Slipknot) everytime I go for penny guides.:D

So like others, I too have noticed this downward trend of being able to obtain penny guides, like we used to in "the good ole days." There are a few things that I would say contribute to this though. First off, as was stated by floormat, as the different stores start to recognize you as the "guide person," your chances start going downhill. Unless you can spend the money to accompany their "loss" of the penny guide, they're just going to pull them.

The second issue at hand is CAG itself. As CAG continues to grow and new people visit the site and read about penny guides, the competition grows. As the competition for penny guides grows, more stores begin to get cleaned out of their penny guides. As more and more stores begin to have this issue, what used to be thought of as "a lucky customer" here and there, now becomes the "devil customers that are ripping us off." Unfortunately, with the growth of CAG, we have doomed ourselves to failure.

On another topic, can someone from GS/EB please start letting us know when guides get pennied. We used to have several informants and now we get nothing. The only penny guides I/we have come across at EB/GS recently are ones that people have randomly come across or gotten a friendly employee to look up for us. With the number of guides that penny out at EB/GS, I believe this is one of the most important places to have an informant. Any takers?

I've always been able to get some of the guides available till recently. Before, the guides were all in one spot and occupied a fair bit of shelf space. Now they are distributed to the different platforms. I can find a few placed with PS2, some with DS and PC etc. The PC section had only about a dozen guides this time, the PS2 section a few more.

I went to the Hickory Hollow (Nashville, TN) BB last night, and they had no guides on display at all. They told me they reorganizing the game area for the PS3/Wii launch, and temporarily moved all the guides to the back. I asked about GRAW, he said they didn't have it (I hadn't seen it the last time I was there). He had thought they had Kameo, but wasn't able to find it in back. The guides should be back out on the floor in a few days.

Of course, my BB had diligently and promptly removed all traces of the Kameo guide from the store, which was still there a week ago.

Hit my BB today and went to the PC guide section. They actually had a bunch of guides out marked with 1 cent price tags. I've never seen that, and the cashier seemed to be just as amazed. There were guides for the Movies, Star Wars Empire at War, Quake 4 and Guild Wars all marked at one penny. There might have been a couple others but I can't remember. I only picked up Empire at War and the Movies but there were plenty of each left.
Lawdood, where are you located? And was the Guild Wars guide for the first one?
I'm in Sacramento and as far as the Guild Wars goes, I have no idea, I'm not really into PC games and have never played that.

I was checking BB.com and noticed 3 pennied-out guides: The Movies, Tycoon City: New York, and Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends. I ordered one of each for in-store pickup. They were also part of a B2G1F deal, so the total charge to my card is $0.02.

So, uh...that's my $0.02.

BTW, I'm looking for the original Guild Wars Prima Guide.

The Movies guide is a definite, but the original Guild Wars, LOTR Battle for Middle Earth(PC), and Half Life Episode 1 were not pennied out.

Picked up The Movies, Tycoon City: NY, Rise of Nations: ROL and Star Wars: Empire at War at Best Buy. Not without difficulty, though. I ordered Tycoon City off the website for in-store pickup. I picked up the other guides off the shelf and went to the front register. The cashier rang them up at 0.01 but refused to sell them to me. I asked for a manager who explained that because of a contractual obligation with the guide publisher, they couldn't sell them to me. I pulled out the confirmation for the Tycoon City guide and asked "If you can't sell them to me, why is your corporate office allowing it?" A moment later and another cashier came back and rang up the other guides.

I still don't like that Best Buy... they pull all the console guides, but leave the PC guides on the shelves.

Hah, ordered Movies and Rise of Nations for in-store pickup as well. I didn't want to get too greedy with Tycoon City (I think it'd be hard to trade or sell that guide anyway.)

I didn't have any problem with the .01 Titan's Quest pickup, so this should be a breeze.

Put in an order for in store pickup, but I'll prolly be able to grab them any time within the next few weeks (they NEVER pull PC guides at my store)
