Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

If you have guides to trade or request please post here as well and of course any video game magazine deals you may find from any store.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

Good Hunting

Will they sell them to u At EB ive been going to TRU without problems and i didnt want to run into any at EB so tell me u expirences at EB ok thx
I'm sure Hoshi will vouch for me since I recently did a trade with him. :)
Word.

-Hoshi

Wow, the new guy (possible manager?) at the EB in the Mall of America (Bloomington MN) is a serious jerk. Avoid at all costs!

I bring up the Crimson Skies book and have him price check it for me. Both he and I can clearly see that it is $0.01 in the system. He insists though that he will charge me $14.99 for the guide simply because that is what is on their price tag on it. Excuse me?!?!?! The price in the system is always what the price of the item is (this is the way it is everywhere in retail). Just because someone was lazy and didn't put a $0.01 price tag on it he thinks he can charge more than what corporate is telling him to charge for it? I had previously worked at this EB for five and a half years. Not always were the items on the floor 100% caught up with the price changes. But that did not give me an excuse to charge someone more for a game simply due to a tagging error. The price in the POS terminal is what the item was. Period. No shafting of customers or anything of the sort. Don't get me wrong, if they flat out didn't want to sell the guide to me that would be no big deal to me at all really, but to tell me that they will do everything they can to purposely rip me off should I want to actually buy it is what pissed me off. Looks like I'll have to stand there and physically remove the price tags from anything before buying them now.

This is why I hate the high turn over at places like EB. You get someone who has no idea how retail stores are run and give you the run-around like this. Bah!

For you, and for the many people who have had this problem at CompUSA, I think a chat with the Better Business Bureau is in order. This tactic seems like a version of the bait-and-switch (especially since CompUSA has them marked as a penny on the shelf). They lure you up to the checkstand with what you think is a cheap guide, and then hope you'll go through with buying it for a higher price. Also, a lot of states have laws that if a price tag and the ring up cost aren't the same, the store HAS to sell if to you for the cheaper of the two.

we are supposed to toss them at the end of the night.
maybe he...
1. tried to charge you more because he knew you wouldn't buy and tossed it at the end of night
2. kept it for himself

some stores keep them on the shelf so people can get them for free. Others, like mine, follow EB policy and pull them.

Will an employee get in trouble for selling them at 1 cent? Does EB tell you to pull them for space reasons, for inventory write-off reasons, or to discourage people from coming into the store to look for 1 cent guides? I understand following policy but if a person manages to find some charging them higher than it is in the system doesn't seem fair.

I don't know the specifics of how write-offs work, but I'd imagine they'd also want to discourage people from coming into the store and looking for penny guides. Imagine if you brought a fat stack of penny guides up checkout, and all of these penny-pinching parents and school students were right behind you watching that transaction take place. They'd wreck the guide rack in minutes looking for those deals. When I browse for penny guides, I tend to grab the guides and hold on to them until the store is thinned out, then ask about it.

None of the EBs I've gone to seem to care about whether the penny guides go through the system, though. Hell, last time I asked about them, they pulled out a box of penny guides from behind the counter and asked me if I wanted to buy those, too. One of the Gamestops I've been to, the manager stopped the sale in mid-transaction, voided it, and just gave me the guides. The TRU I work at doesn't care, but will pull them all from the shelf and put them in the glass case to keep someone from hoarding them all. The TRU across town from here, though... Last time I was in there, the manager got pissed and instructed his cashier to destroy the guides. Now, I've been in and out of TRU for almost three years now (and I know I've been there longer than that manager at the store across town), and I've never heard of them having to do anything like that. I have to go through my managers at work to buy stuff anyway, and they never once thought of destroying the penny guides. I just tell them "They're too old." and they just nod.

This response was longer than it needed to be.

I am pretty sure we do it for both space (thats a main reason at my store) and inventory reasons (corporate wide; we have some deal worked with Brady/Prima that we only pay them if we sell them. After a while, they tell us to destroy them.) It isn't about the third for sure.

Hope that clears some stuff up

Thanks for the info guys....today I got a gotham racing and an indy for free...there are two EB's equal distance to me, I chose the one with friendlier employee's who are cool about the guides, I also picked up a Shrek 2 XBOX for a birthday present, so the store got my business.

Now all I need is a 1 cent alias guide, c'mon drop!

That's why I think it's a good idea to let customers buy penny guides, it creates a good rapport. If store A is friendly and lets you have some free guides, and if store B is rude and laughs in your face, who are you going to buy games from in the future? Not to mention that when people drop by a store looking for penny guides, they may buy something else too that they otherwise might not have bought at that particular store.

Also, thanks to all of you "insiders" who are sharing your knowledge about your store's policies. 8)

Do you have any idea what formula they use to determine which guides get marked down? Is it based on the sales of the game, the sales of the guide, how long it's been out, whether there's more than one brand of the guide? Sometimes the choices seem a bit confusing.....I definately wouldn't have marked down nintendo games' guides so quick, like wind waker, warioworld, mario kart. But i've seen a lot of older guides (like Halo, even though it is very popular) still full price. And Alias. You can't tell me anyone actually has bought that guide :)

It needs to be mine for 1 cent! Actually that may prove tough once it is discounted because I haven't even seen one at any price at any of the stores I go to. Lordopus if (when!) it drops if you could grab me a copy before they're torn up that would be great and I'd definately get you the self addressed envelope w/ postage.

One final thought...whenever I show friends 1 cent guide's that I've gotten, they always ask me why they were lowered to 1 cent and not 10 or 5 dollars. And I usually tell them the part about the writeoff and destroying it....but it actually is a good question....they lower games till they get very cheap, you'd think a lot of people would be willing to pay a reduced price for guides of games they are playing, at least $5.

Some guides are halved once or twice, but it seems random. TRU has the F-Zero guide for $7.50 (or $8, I can't remember) right now. I bought my Dragon Warrior VII guide from them for $3.48. So, not all go straight to a penny. I'd would absolutely love it if they dropped the prices of guides to $1-$5, though. It's too easy to hoard guides at a penny. This never occured to me until I was in EB a month or so ago, and saw someone buying up penny guides to games he couldn't even pronounce. I mean, c'mon, if you don't care enough to learn the name of a game, you obviously don't want or need the guide for it. He left with 23 or so guides, too. He even had to leave once and go get more money for those guides! o_O;; If that was $23 instead of 23 cents, a lot of those guides would've likely ended up in a lot more appreciative hands.

As was mentioned before, it's a deal with Prima and Brady where, like magazines, instead of incurring return shipping costs, they're destroyed on site; a consignment deal if you will. These stores aren't supposed to actually sell them because that obviously breaks the agreement with the publisher, priced at a penny or not. By selling even at a penny, it goes through the store's system as having been sold and......well, that's where my knowledge of the thing ends. They mark them down to a penny and toss them so no shrink dollars are incurred (how that works out, again that's where my knowledge ends).

Basically, if a rep from Prima or Brady strolled in and saw the guides being sold at a penny (or given away with the game, as I've seen Gamestop do), they would most likely have a hissy, report it to the company, shananana. What would happen after that, well, one more time for good measure......that's where my knowledge ends. ;)

There's this one BB close to me (Glendale, AZ), and they usually have next to no strategy guides, full price or a penny. But recently, Pokemon Snap appeared on the shelf. Where the heck did that thing come from?

You know actually I don't recall them ever evening putting it through the system for a cent at EB, they just give them to you. A few times I was rung up at Gamestop for a few cents and always at TRU.

I went to TRU in cutler ridge Fl, and they at first refused to sell me more guides at .01. They advised they were to be destroyed and I couldn't get any. When I asked to see the destruction or mark down list that had the guides placed on them, they said they had no such list. So I advised them that if they didn't have a destroy list then the item was an instock item and I wanted to buy it at said price. They let me get one of each, so we made off with xenosaga, DKC, dark cloud 2, counter strike, Kingdom Hearts, Indiana Jones, Yu gi oh duelists of roses. It was an alright find, but it's getting harder and harder now. So just be warned when dealing with toys r us

Exactly. Ringing something through at a penny is a big no-no since they do that specifically for inventory purposes. :)

Update for Fort Wayne- I went to EB,KB and Babbages/Gamestop at Glenbrook and they all had no .01 guides. I also checked BB at northcrest and found the same thing.

Interesting note though--- The guy I spoke to at EB told me they had some recently but they went rather quick. Is someone here in town hoarding? If so, share the wealth! If not, then where o where are the guides going?.....

Went by my local TRU tonight and found Xenosaga. While I was there I decided I would scan a few more, and came up empty. I was placing the scanned guides back on the shelf when I noticed several copies of the Devil May Cry 2 guide down at the bottom. Knowing how old that game is I took a shot & scanned it, and sure enough, .01. :)

BTW, my TRU has given me zero trouble about these guides either time I've bought them. Tonight I was with a friend, and I went out with 3 copies of Xenosaga (one for me, one for my friend I was with and one for another friend of mine) and 4 copies of DMC2 (same as above, but I got an extra for myself to take the poster out of). The girl ringing us up actually thought the whole thing was pretty funny.

Why oh why won't Alias drop....

I think I am going to throw caution to the wind and buy Riddick Prima for full price...but I just have to think alias is destined for .01 centness shortly...

Just an update for people who goto TRU. TRU has sent out new standards for items that are to be destroyed, which includes the Penny Guides. Management is now supposed to help track the guides and when they drop to a penny they are to be destroyed. Prima and the other guide companies agreement with TRU is that instead of having all the stores ship these back they can destroy them. This saves everyone time and money. TRU receives credits for the guides once they drop to this price and since the agreement is that they must be destoyed TRU is trying to follow this. The notice even says these are not to be given to guests or associates for any reasons and must be destroyed. These were always the rules, but it looks like they are going to try and follow them better.

Heh...I knew it couldn't last forever, especially with the number of people that have no doubt been snatching them up around the country. :p I'm sure they can pull up a report on how many 1-cent items have been sold, and when you see those numbers increasing the way they no doubt have been, they're gonna crack down on it. After all, why would a customer pay $15 for something that they know will drop to a penny if they're patient enough? Not that I've ever paid $15 for a guide, but that's the corporate mentality.

You'd think that in today's day and age they could figure out something better than having the price drop to .01 in the system. Like making it an invalid sale, not ring up. Or, pull them off the shelves before they drop.

You'd think that...but for whatever reason, it seems to be some weird kind of standard. I've followed the Best Buy guides for a long time, and then found out here that GameStop, EB, and TRU all use basically the same system for price drops on those guides as far as the "last price before we pull it off the shelf" goes. There has to be some internal reason for it...I know that in most such systems, items MUST have a price associated with them, but I don't know why the ending price has to be one cent in these cases. I'm just glad it is. :)

there policy is to rip the covers off immediately so no one can get them per one store in Guernee Illinois. But I can tell you I have gotten them at some FYE's Its a YMMV as who and where.

Got the shaft at FYE. The cashier was nice about it, but when he tried to ring it up I told him it was on clearance but he went away for a few minutes to ask a manager. Came back and told me they had to send it back to the company. Wondered how I even got it. I told him, on the shelf. He was surprised and apologized but said he couldn't sell them.

Wasn't a complete loss because I picked up Euro Trip for 21.99 - 10 rebate and Spider Man Deluxe for 19.99 - 10 rebate.

went to a FYE outta state today and got turtles and wrestlemania and some manager lady said they should of got em but i can take them but I have to buy something. I go to grab the extra copy of wrestlemania and she says only one of each title. the cheapest thing there is like 1.50 for candy. ackkk to that.

Comp USA

$.02 guides:

Rayman 3
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
ZOE 1
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

I wasn't able to buy any of them - the manager said "they were not for sale".....yet they were on the shelves. Isn't there some law that states if an item is for sale on a store's shelves, then the customer has a right to purchase it?

Josef

Here is an idea. I am sure ones age or presence would effect this. If you are lucky enough to score some guides strait off the shelf and when you attempt to purchase them they say they are not for sale say but sir or madam they are out for purchase on the shelf and not just one but several how can they not be for sale?

That may work but if not keep progressing. Having an attitude of humility or curiosity seems to work with many people.

If not then question what they will do with them. The typical response is we send them back to the company or throw them away. CompUSA I am not sure of but in most cases that is not true. Brady, Prima, Nintendo and others have a contract to send X amount of guides to company X and store X agrees to keep them on the shelf for at least a while typically 6 months or more. You can proceed this farther by saying why would store X spend money to ship them back to a warehouse to throw them away there and if you guys are throwing them away / giving them to employees couldn't I take a couple off your hands on the way out to the trash? Having humility here is typically better than being a hard nose. Many store truly don’t care and the nicer you are typically the nicer they will be to you. Most people don't mind being nice and lots of others want to make happy customers and a happy attitude means typically they have done that but a hard-nosed attitude means we have already lost this customer so why should we care about giving him these guides. Bleh hopefully that proves fruitful.

Back on the trading front, if anyone is sitting on guides they don't need.... I am looking for:

007 everything or nothing....

PM me for what I have left, since I have gotten rid of a lot of my guides.

Another update for you. These three guides will be going down to a penny this Thursday June 26th at TRU. All are Prima guides.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SSX 3, and Wrestlemania XIX

Also, there are quite a few older Prima guides that aren't a penny, but will ring up for the Buy 1 get 1 free sale on video games. I know some of the code books(the ones that list tons of games for all systems) are included and there are a few Prima guides that were included, but not many and they ring up full price, but you are able to do the Buy 1 get 1 deal.

Yeah, I noticed that the Nintendo Metroid Fusion Guide, Wind Waker Guide, and the Prima Wind Waker guide were on the BOGO deal currently going. Thought it odd, but didn't think anyone would go for them.

however you've gotten this info., thanks! :)

I know that Tubtub said the TRU guides are not available till Thursday but I am just confirming that as of Monday the 21 that they were still full price.

oh I love it. unfortunately probably will make it worse for me at my TRU. The sooner they know the less chance of me getting any.

Hmm I wonder if they have always had advanced notice and just been a day or 2 lax on getting them cause they are always gone by the 3rd day.

tubtub - Do you know if TRU reguarly is updated several days in advance on guide drops ¿ Also is the drop on Thurday the 24 or Saturday the 26 ¿ Thanks for all your help.

If anyone goes to Toys 'R Us and picks up any of these the following guides I will pay you a nice profit for them :)

Nintendo Guides:
Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons
Animal Crossing
Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Advance

Thanks!
Chris

The price drop is Thursday. I guess when I was typing it, I accidentally hit the 6 instead of the four. TRU posts the price drops a day before they happen on their Intranet site. They, also, send the store a file that automatically prints out the whole store's price drops about a week before the price drops occur, but usually R-zone price drops don't arrive early. And most of the time the penny guides aren't listed in the price drops, but lately they've been better in letting stores know what guides are going to be a penny so they can make sure they are destroyed.

does anyone have a simcity 3000 guide? It's kind of old but I would trade for it. Just PM me for a list of what I would trade for it.
