so how long does it take for guides to become that cheap? I don't recall seeing prices like that in Orlando, FL.
The two best buy stores near me do not even carry guides.

a big tale of annoyance:

i go to my local best buy and bring to the counter a copy of the guides for payne 2 and persia, the checker rings them up for a penny each, as i am handing the two cents to pay, the general manager rushes over and says they cannot sell these guides to me at this price, they are required to return them to the publisher

naturally, i got annoyed, told him i had waited in line to pay for these items which rang up on their price scanner at one cent each, he didn't budge, at that point i told him that he messed with the wrong ivy-league lawyer and that i would be taking the matter up with best buy corporate

big fun

That is annoying. I have never had a problem buying guides. However it would have seemed he could have let you have the guides then direct an employee to remove the others from the shelf rather than causing a fuss.

dammit..i bought the manhunt guide a while back for $9 [price match target ad] thinking i got a good deal..but now theyre a penny and my bb still has a few left...nice ones too..man i knew i shoulda waited..i mean i dont even use my guide anyway lol..

You always have an easier time buying guides with something else, if you just pay 2 cents the manager sees you as a cheap ass :), with something else, a customer. Fair No, but realistic.

I've got Super Mario Brothers, VII, Sonic DX, Tomb Radier AOD, F-zero, Soul Calibur 2, Max Payne 2, Manhunt, and 1 Prince of Persia to trade.

Looking for Final Fantasy Advance Tactics, Myst 3 Exile, Silent Hill 3, THUG = Tony hawk underground, Virtua Fighter 4, Blood Rayne, Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny.

What to trade? PM me.

Just picked up Max Payne 2 today. They also had Manhunt, but I doubt I'll ever get that game. They had about 20 copies of each, but, of course, no Prince of Persia.

Thanks to the tips.....picked up two of each at Roseville, MN store today. They have a bunch left of all of them if anyone lives in or near Mpls. If anyone wants to trade for a MP 2, Manhunt, or Prince of Persia guide, I'm looking for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Fire Emblem. [email protected]

Picked up 15 copies of the manhunt guide today at the Fort Wayne Best buys. Prince of Persia and Max Payne was gone. It appears thats all they had too. If anyone needs one let me know. [email protected]. trade ship whatever.

Also the Star Wars clone wars guide rang up at 2.99 and the soul caliber II disc scanned at 4.99. Not one cent'ers but reduced non the less. Hope that helps someone.

Looking for a Mario Party 5 guide, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Disgaea if anyone has them trade whatever.

15 Manhunt guides and 1 Silent Hill 3 guide that I can part with.

yeah I went to both today. I was able to pick up the last two MP 2 and the last two PoP guides. I went looking for for all three for me and my buddy. Picked up a bunch of Manhunts though. Got rid of all but the two for us.

Is it just me or does the BB by Jefferson Pointe just suck when it comes to these? They had guides in little racks here and there. I asked the guy working in videogames if they had any .01 guides and he showed me the Manhunts he had sitting up on a shelf. I told him I didn't need it I was looking for the others and walked away. He followed me to the end of the aisle and asked me if I worked for BB. I told him no and asked why. He said he wondered since I asked for the .01 guides he assumed I worked there! I laughed and said no, I saw it on a "message board" on the web. He goes "We're on messages boards? Cool!" I walked away laughing....

I went to my BB yesterday. Got lucky and grabbed the last POP guide for 1 cent. Also grabbed a Clone Wars guide for $2.99. There were appx 10 Clone Wars guides left. Nothing else. The cashier I went thru said 'some guy' came in and bought 40+ guides for 1 cent each. Nice. If that person is reading this post, thanks for sharing the wealth jerkoff.

I just came from Best Buy Walnut Hill TX (Store 58) last night and saw at least 5 copies each of Manhunt and Max Payne and 2 copies of Prince of Persia guides for a penny. And Clone Wars are $2.99 and there are still a lot remaining.

I apologize if this has already been posted.

My Best Buy had one PoP guide left and I snatched it up. That was the only penny guide they had left. Oh well at least I didn't come out empty handed.

Now I know why I couldn't find any yesterday. Oh well.

The BB by Jefferson Point has a terrible selection of guides. I usually don' t even bother looking there. Plus, it's a long drive.

I wasn't trying to be greedy or nothing and sorry if I caused you any inconvience. I'll gladly give you some if you want any and i'd gladly take any if you have some I could use. Video game stores in Fort Wayne Indiana seem to rarely buy guides so they aren't worth much here as far as that (if you know otherwise please let me know).

If we ever get a CAG meeting or heck i'll met you at the mall or something if you want some. I wanted to get them for CAG'ers and anyone elase who wanted one. I didn't want them to all get snatched up and sit on someones shelf. Bleh Thats enough. If I can be of help let me know.

too much of a hassle to go through 11 , is this for every BB's? specificly has anyone bought a penny guide in the Los Feliz BB in Los angeles?>

I went to my BB today and all the guides were marked as 14.99. So I finally worked up the courage to ask some employee. I said, "I heard that when guides have been out for a while you guys drop the price to a penny to get rid of the remaining inventory". The guy looked at me like I was nuts. So I said, "Can you please go scan these and see how much the ring up for?".

He goes off and when he comes back his face was all white like he just saw a ghost. He shook his head yes, and whispered (I guess he didn't want anyone else to hear) that they did ring up for a penny.

Thanks guys :D
I get $4 a piece at McVans. I wouldn't suggest bringing all those in at the same time, though. :) I haven't tried EB or babbages.
I took three into McVan's at Parkwest and the dude said he could only give me store credit. I think we wanted to say never mind but I took the credit. $12 isn't much but add that up and Blam! new game.
Maplecrest is usually were I can sell the guides easily since it's the"mega" store...

I think it's the employees more than anything. The Jefferson Pointe BB had some Manhunts stacked up on an EMPLOYEE shelf away from the videogames and such. When I asked he took me to them but seriously, how many are gonna ask? Especially in that lame store :?

I got the last Max Payne 2 from my Best Buy today. The clerk said to me "what are you going to do, ebay this?" I told him I didn't even own the game but I might rent it someday. Actually, now it might be worth buying the $20 used one from Blockbuster and selling/trading the bundle.

They had a bunch of the Star Wars ones but nothing else from this list.
umm if possible could you be more specific on where this employee shelf is ¿? *grins* =P
yeah it was right there by their computer, they've probably been moved by now though.....

Toys R Us .01

(Note - According to the personnel at the TRU in Fort Wayne, Indiana there is a company mandate to ship back all guides that are .01 but they still have 2.00 guides on the shelves though so the truth of this may still be somewhat of a mystery)

EB Games .01

(I spoke with the manager at the Glenbrook mall location in Fort Wayne Indiana and he said that most guides are dropped to a penny around the six-month time frame. He didn’t seem to care as he said just clearing stock for the new stuff. If you have a cool staff might not hurt to ask what if any they have)

(3/2/04 Update: When speaking with the employees at the Jefferson Point EB Games in Fort Wayne Indiana they said that they receive daily updates on their prices and that if you happen to be there the day that the guides are reduced you can get them but other then that they have a company mandate to trash them. This seems to contridicate the impression given by the Glenbrook Mall EB Games in Fort Wayne Indiana as he left the impression that they just go fast not are trashed. I was not able to retrive any kind of list from Jefferson Point location as they claimed to trash them. I will attempt to get a list when I pick up harvest moon: A wonderful life.)

Brute Force

Meijer (Reduced Prices) {price confirmed at stores in Indiana and Ohio}

F-Zero - Nintendo $2.00

As far as EB goes, it depends on the location. Some of them will leave them out, some will trash them, and some have employees take them. Also, there are some Gamestops and EBs that give them out free with pre-orders. A full list for EB and Gamestop would be great.

A true cheapass would just go to GameFaqs for some guiding strategy. Just goes to show how those guides are becoming obsolete that they'll sell them for a penny =/

I think someone from Wilmington has been lurking hardcore. My cashier tonight told me someone came in and literally cleaned house.

I know for a fact last time I was there,

There were

6 Jedi Academy
6 Manhunt
8 SMB3

and lots of others. I know I am not supposed to bitch, but hell this person takes every penny guide available(proabaly where the FFTA guides went also)

I was looking through the strategy guides at BB a couple of weeks ago, and an employee asked if he could help me find something. I asked if they had any guides on clearance, and he told me they were all full price. I told him that I'd heard there were some on sale, and he insisted that there weren't any. Is there any way of finding out which guides are cheap without pestering an employee relentlessly (I'm kind of a wimp)? Is there anyone in particular I should ask, like a manager or customer service rep, that could verify which guides are a penny with minimal hassel? Or should I just take the guides listed on this thread up to the checkout counter and hope for the best?

hey floormat, got any extras for a fellow fort wayne cheapass? Don't have much to trade but would pay for them. Give me a heads up....
Darn!

Pokemon R/S still $14.99 :(
Where at? I'm actually interested in those and he has those posted in the list.. I don't want to get up to the counter at Best Buy, them ring up $15 and have to flee out of the front doors too fast for anyone to catch me..

So every guide listed in this thread at other Best Buys will definately be .01 at mine? I'd really hate to have to bother a worker to scan them, and even more-so to get to the register and tell them I don't want that $15 guide because I thought it was cheaper. =P

i picked up a manhunt, max payne 2, and prince of persia...when i got the price check the guy was all "um lemme ask my boss" lol i love that look they get on their face when they see its only a cent..then when he comes backs he says that i have to sign up for that music program [rhapsady?] to get the guides what a bastard haha..but in the end i got them for 3 cents at the register..

sure LoganDX

I have only acquired four different guides total since I found out about CAG. Silent Hill 3 (sold) F-zero, Soul Caliber II and Manhunt. The only one that I have extra's of is Manhunt. I have 14 extra copies. I am specifically looking to acquire guides for Mario Party 5, Mario golf, mario Kart Double Dash or Disgaea guides but pretty much anything I don't have as well. I will be taking a trip to the Chicagoland area soon hopefully acquiring some more CAG deals I can't get in Fort Wayne.

If you happen to have some extra's that would be great if not i'll gladly give you a few Manhunts if you would like them. But you better believe I am not gonna take a loss on that one cent guide. I want my penny ! kidding = P Let me know if I can help.

Just went to BB in Glendale, Arizona. Not a single penny guide was there. I've looked on other occassions, and have never been successful. I suspect either there's a cheapass hoarder who buys all of them up, or the store throws them out. Thanks for the tips though, maybe I'll be successful in the future.

I was doing some thinking, and I thought - is it possible that BB marks down all guides that are either several months old or just plain not selling well? Is there anyone willing to check it out and do a price-check on each guide? I'm too wimpy to walk up to an employee and say, "Hey, can you check the prices on all these guides - I just want to buy all the ones that are a penny", but I'm sure there's at least one person here who wouldn't mind.

I just did it the other day. Got 9 copies of Manhunt, 3 copies of Max Payne 2, and 2 copies of Prince of Persia all for 14 cents.

I don;t get it. Are you just an asshole? Why would you buy so many copies? Perhaps 12 other people would like a penny strategy guide. Are you going to sell these on ebay now?

well, perhaps some. It seems to always happen to me so I am just doing it for a change. I am playing on giving a few to my friends who did not know about this deal but I don't see anything wrong with what I did.
