You start a mag, You need a way to pay for each issue to be produced. So you let people advertise in it and charge them big bucks for it. Well the people doing the ads says I want at least 100,000 people a month reading your mag for my ad to be worth what I'm paying.
So to make your mag more popular and get bigger advertisers you give away subs. The 95% of the money a mag makes is on ads. When you pay full price for a sub your just putting money in their pocket.
However the free subs they give away ups their subscription numbers. So other advertisers are willing to pay more money to get in your mag now which constantly has an increasing subscription numbers.
