$30 is a pretty sweet deal for a console... I'm kind of tempted to pick one up since there are quite a few GC games I'm interested in playing. Even if I get a Wii down the road, its only a $30 investment and in teh meantime I can enjoy the games now.
I used to have 2 gamecubes: a broken one and a working one. I replaced the laser in the broken one and it worked like new.
About 3 months before the Wii came out, I traded one of them in to EB for $50 credit (I think there was a deal going on at the time).
I got the Wii at launch and traded the other gamecube in to EB for $25 credit that week (Wife's orders).
Three friends came over a couple of weeks later and we went to play Smash Bros. Melee and that's when I realized I only had three gamecube controllers left because EB makes you give one when you trade-in.
No problem, I'll just get a new one; I'm sure they're cheap; it's a last gen system. $25. Son of a bitch. I should have kept the last gamecube--I'd have 4 controllers and a backup system!
I still only have 3 gamecube controllers; I'm thinking about getting a wavebird when Brawl comes out.
Question - what's the trade in value of the corded controller that comes with the system, anyone know? While I want a second system, I don't particularly need yet another controller (I've got two corded, five wave birds, and, if I really, really need an 8th player, I always have my ASCII keyboard controller...)
I'm going to get the black one I had my eye on yesterday. In my upstairs office I have a black CDX, black Saturn, black sports Dreamcast, Xbox, and a platinum Gamecube that sticks out like a sore thumb. I still use the Gamecube quite frequently for the Gameboy Player, the one thing my Wii can't do.
Yeah, good luck finding a new Gamecube in any stores.
There's at least one at every Gamestop, I've been to. The Sears near me has at least two and the Targets in my area have at least one. Not to mention BestBuy and TRU have one too as well. So yeah, I still have some luck on my side!
I already have a Gamecube and it works perfectly, but for $30 I want another one for no apparent reason.
I thought the exact same thing!

I see new Gamecubes in just about every mass retailer in my area. Are you implying that they are getting rare? They aren't. Now a new Xbox... that's another story.
True that, I've been looking for a new, original Xbox for like a year now. Even the crappiest of crappy K-marts seem to have gotten rid of their backstock by now. Oh well...
I see new GCs all the time. If they drop to $50 new, I'll wind up buying at least one. Finding a new one with the component inputs would be truly epic.
I already have 3. Two were "broken" (Disc Read Errors) but super easy fixes (turn a potentiometer - woohoo!). As for what to do with them... I haven't connected three together yet, but we have connected two together for network play of Mario Kart and Kirby Air Ride (don't have 1080 Avalanche yet). Kirby Air Ride is way better with 4 players on 2 screens than 4 players on one screen. KAR is hard to follow with 4 players on one screen - visuals are too crazy, but 2 players on each screen works great. Mario Kart has some annoying limitations, but still we only did 5 players and it was fun. I'd love to get 8 players going. Oh, and that's it for network play - those three games are it, but come on, you know you want to try it. Oh, and you can't do this on a two Wii's, even if you could afford two.
Oh, and don't forget homebrew. Nintendo will probably keep shutting the door on homebrew on the Wii via firmware "updates", but there's nothing they can do to stop homebrew on the Gamecube.
Not to highjack the thread, but do you need a modem or BBA for each Gamecube if you're linking them together? Or is there another, mystical cord that I don't know about.

You need a BBA, one for each cube. So, yeah, if you want to try network play, don't forget to factor in the BBAs. If you're hooking two cubes together you can just use a ethernet crossover cable to connect them. For 3 or more you have to use a hub.
I'm surprised people are still finding new gamecubes in stores but there won't be any more price drops by nintendo. It will just end up like the original Xbox.

What's a BBA(big brain academy?). But yes, you need a modem, and just use a regular Ethernet cable.
Do networked Gamecube games still function on a Wii? Is there anything a Gamecube can do that a Wii can't?
yeah, a wii can't use the gameboy player, the bba, and thats about it.

For $55 you can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on your TV! That's where the money is at with these GameCubes....since everybody and their grandma now owns a Wii.
are there any cool versions i should keep my eyes peeled for? i.e is there an metroid/zelda themed cube that would be super cheap this time around or is there only purple black and platinum?
this is why you should always clean it with one of thse clorox disinfecting wipes. one time i got a wavebird that had batteries inside that had been leaking.
Pretty much, Hibiwa. If it doesn't work, you can just return it and ask them to test it (they normally do have the cables and miniture screens behind the counters to do so).

I usually use cotton balls and rubbing alcohol, since it also works to clean and/or disinfect the crap I sometimes end up buying. And, leaking batteries? Looks like someone didn't at least check the damned thing before taking it in, huh?
What are the odds of getting a used GC with the port for the component cable at a gamestop? Is there any easy way to pick one out?
I think you have to look for the ones with the special port. though you only have about 10% chance of getting one.
