What can the Xbox do wtih this? Is there going to be any real benefit playing through my montior with this resolution verus 480i through my SDTV?
But it's not even 720P
i'm not a videophile, but i play one on the internet. doesn't the 360 upconvert the resolution or something? wouldn't it still look better then what your sdtv can produce?

Well here's some resolutions multiplied out
1024x768 = 778240
480x640 = 307200
1280x720 = 921600

So 1024x768 gives it a lot mroe resolution to work with I guess. Maybe it isn't widescreen?

how big is the sdtv?

Gamespot did a decent feature on what the 360 looks like under different resolution and such. Also while I'm far from an expert in this field IIRC, 1280 x 720 (or maybe it's 1024) VGA resolution is like the same as 720p.

Here's the gamspot article...

Like they mention the big drawback to playing on a monitor or the like would be a drop in the display size.

1024x768 is just regular aspect (4:3 aspect ratio) whereas 1280x720 is widescreen. That said, it will look better on your monitor than on your SDTV on the higher resolution. If you're gonna be doing single player gaming anyway, I'd just hook it up to your monitor instead.

So it's run in a non-widescreen High-Def?

Yes, it would be non-widescreen but better resolution.

High def is dependant on the resolution and your monitor should be able to handle that. WS seems to be dependant on the game as some games will display as widescreen, but letterboxed (Kameo, PDZ), full screen (Madden), or widescreen but stretched vertically (PGR3).

Resolutions don't make that huge of a difference when it comes to computer monitors (especially LCD flat screens). Monitors are dynamic enough to adjust to their resolutions to make the clearest picture possible.

I just got the vga adapter and it looks freaking sweet on my dell pc monitor. Its only a 15.7" monitor so I'm thinking of getting a bigger one. I believe I have been playing in 1024 X 768 and it looks really, really good.

Holy crap, thanks for posting that deal dafoomie. I was thinking about getting a dell 20" monitor but the deal you have posted for a 19" ends up being about $400 cheaper after the rebate so I think losing a inch off the monitor is well worth it for that price. That price is ridiculously good.

It sounds like you have the monitor already, whats your impressions of playing on it. Do you feel it is to small or is it just right? I will also being using this for my 360.

Thanks again man, that is a great deal. I'm off to investigate it a bit.

Its actually being delivered today. I'll let you know.

I've been using my 20' SGI for Xbox/X360 for a few years now, that seems just fine to me.

Dam!! I went to add it to my cart and it says the item has been discontinued.

Do you know of any other sweet deals like this one?

Try again later, it reappears in stock from time to time.

Azatek.com will occasionally have a deal on something, but usually the office supply stores have nice deals on the 19 inch monitors with a rebate, plus you don't have to pay for shipping.

Came in today, looks good. Couple of issues though, 1280x1024@85hz isn't supported, had to go with 75hz. 1280x960@85hz is supported, but it looks stretched out. I'll have to figure out how to fix that, but its fine for now.

Sounds pretty good dafoomie. I currently have a dell 15" flat panel monitor but I'm thinking of getting a 20 or 24" monitor from their online store. Its a little pricey but I know what I'm getting.

Do you have a two screen setup dafoomie and if so how or what are you using to pull it off? Is there an adapter that I have to purchase if I wanted to do this?

For the 360? You just need the MS VGA adapter. Right now I'm using one monitor for the computer, and another monitor for the 360 and HDTV. If the 2nd input on my 2nd monitor worked, I could run a 2 monitor setup on the computer, but it doesn't.

I have the dell credit card so I ended up splurging a bit an ordered the 24" dell lcd screen. I read a ton of great customer reviews over at cnet.com that really sold me on it. It has all kind of hookups to it which is great. I can hook up my xbox, 360, watch tv on it and play multiple tables of poker on the same screen, lol. I should be getting it by Monday.

I turned up the resolution on my existing monitor last night to what would be equivalent of 720p. I popped in madden and went into instant replay mode and the details on the player jerseys and helmets is freaking unbelievable. You can really see the stiching of the numbers on the jerseys and I was really wowed by everything I saw at this resolution on my existing monitor with the vga adapter.

If anyone has a monitor that is capable of displaying high resolutions I HIGHLY recommend getting the vga adapter instead of buying an HDTV. I have tried two HDTV's and I have had by far the best performance on a monitor with the vga adapter.

ok you guys need to stop assuming this resolution is higher than this one especially when you're talking about shifting aspect ratios...........

1024x768 is a 4:3 res that if you count out does have less pixels than 1280x720 which is 16:9. You can't compare the 2.... one is widescreen and one is not. You people are just silly.

You can run 1280x720 through the VGA adapter. You can also run in 1280x768, 1280x1024, and 1360x768.
