So a friend of mine switched from a component cable on his PS3 to HDMI. However when we switched we set it to automatic and the HDMI is only producing a 1080i picture while the component cable produced a 1080p picture, or say it says on the screen. What's going on?

We did and it only reverts back to 1080i. His TV only supports 1080i so that's why we're REALLY confused about this whole thing. I didn't think component cables could even support 1080p but I saw it with my own eyes so I have no clue.

if the TV only supports 1080i, there is no way to ouput at 1080p. 1080p has a higher resolution (1920x1080). 1080i mean you are getting 1080 interlaced horizontal lines on the screen, at a lower resolution.

I hope this helps ;)

Well you see that's the weird thing about it all...when you hit "Display" on the remote control it will say what source you're using (Component 1, Component 2, HDMI, etc) and then what resolution you're using (720p for HDTV and normally 1080i for games). Well when we hit the display button it says "HDMI 1080i" and when we switch it back to component cable it says "Component 1920x1080." Is that weird or what? So can his TV actually produce a 1080p picture then even though it says it only supports 1080i?

EDIT: I can try and post pictures if you want proof or a better understanding of what I mean if you all want. It's just so weird and confusing now. Plus the HDMI picture is MUCH brighter than the component cable picture...also weird too.

Component can do 1080p no problem, it just lacks HDCP and a good number of TV's won't actually accept 1080p over component. Having said that though; my old Polaroid TV was like that; it could accept 1080p over component, but it was a 768p set and just gave garbage over HDMI. If it isn't a 1080p set though, you're not gaining anything by running it in 1080p, the TV is just scaling the image down, so you're better off running at 720p or 1080i.

Ah ok then. We'll set it at 1080i and see if there is a change or anything. I thought I knew TVs pretty well but this little issue just blew my mind. Thanks!

Also, just because it says it's running at 1080p doesn't necessarily mean it's actually running at that resolution then? Basically, it doesn't matter if we use 1080p or 1080i on this TV because it will just use 1080i regardless? Am I on the right track?

What about Ghostbusters? I hear they're cheaper lol!

The TV isn't lying, you're just misinterpreting the message. 1080i is 1920x1080 interlaced (where as 1080p is 1920x1080 progressive).
