I just heard from Xbox Live Arcade’s Silver Surfer (Greg Canessa, head of Xbox Live Arcade) and he let me know that his weeks Xbox Live Arcade title ‘Defender’ is just finishing up in the certification department. Why am I telling you this? Because it means that we won’t hit our traditional Wednesday 0800 am GMT release time, but the the team is working as hard as they can to get it into your hands as soon as possible on Wednesday. Thanks for your patience, and I’ll post as soon as it is available for download.

Ugh, hopefully next week we'll get something good like RoboBlitz or Small Arms.

I don't mind a couple of arcade classics but this is getting out of hand. Might as well rename it to XBLA Classics instead.

Way to really pull that money away from two major fucking console releases this week!

Defender can rot in its 20 year old cave, I have better things to buy, Microsoft.

Most of these classic arcade titles have been in the pipe for 9 months; long before most of you were crying about it. So what would you have MS do? Scrap them all half way through development and make us wait even longer for originals?

Or rather pump out a really awesome original release espically on the the eve of PS3 and Wii to really show that XBLA is more than just 20 year old ports of games?

I actually don't mind the ports, I've bought quite a few, but imo this is the one week MS really needed to show some of the strength of its XBLA and release a really stellar original title, like they've been doing on the games front.

Personally, I would be fine with classic releases if they were ones you couldn't easily grab anywhere else (ie: Pac-Man Jr., Super Pac-Man, TMNT Arcade, X-Men Arcade, Mr. Do, Arkanoid).

Failing that, classics would still be interesting if they would release a few at once. Gives a little bit more choice into the mix in case it would otherwise be a "miss" of an update, but that all depends.

But yeah, here's hoping for more unique releases. Then again, considering Namco and Konami hasn't touched most of their back catalogue as of yet, I think we'll be seeing retreads for quite a while yet.

These classics are too fucking old.

I realize they are on a schedule of sorts so that they don't completely blow XBLA's load all at once, but each super-old, outdated classic just makes it more and more sad. Can't wait till we get to the early 90s classic run. Unfortunately, we're still in the early-mid 80s :whistle2:(

This is a great idea, do a few classics at one time.

I hate how the arcade is set up now, where we get one game a week if we're lucky and if you don't like the game, too bad, got to wait another week.

That's one thing I really like about the VC is that it looks like they are going to do games in batches.

I love Defender (and all the classic games) and I'll snag it as soon as it's available, BUT...

I agree with eveything y'all are saying.

There should have been an amazing title available this week (something new or SOTN, perhaps) and the schedule has got to go. Give us a bunch every few weeks.

Check back later for Defender impressions. I'd better be able to use my arcade stick...

According to Major Nelson's podcast last week, there will be 4 or 5 original indie games released before the end of the year. I don't remember which ones, but one of them was Small Arms. The XBLA guy seemed to indicate that there are currently many many originals in development for arcade, and in the future the focus would be on those rather than retro stuff.

Of course, being Major Nelson's podcast, at least half of that info is probably PR bullshit.

I really think we'll have Small Arms next Wednesday at the LATEST. If I had to guess, it would come out before these new consoles drop. Maybe Friday?

While not offended at retro games (I'll be buying Defender as soon as its up), Defender showing up this late in the day makes both Major Nelson and Greg look like asses. They made a big stink about how few times they've missed and how things were now on track and they can't get Defender ready?

Boo.

I don't mind the old games either (although I wish they'd stay post 1990 for a while, this dawn-of-time shit is getting old). What I DO mind is them not staggering their releases to provide a variety of stuff. A retro arcade game, then an original title, then a party/board/puzzle/card game, another retro game, etc. Don't fucking shove 1984 down the pipe week after week.

Bummer. I'd like to see something truly "new" being released.

It would have been sweet as hell if Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released this week. It'd be a good way of sticking it to Sony - one of the best Playstation games ever being released on the 360 during the week of the PS3 launch, even if it wouldn't hurt the PS3 launch (not that any Arcade title would though).
