Just curious if Madden will actually suffer this year.
I know there are many threads about the football wars already, so no need to comment, just vote.

Cheapy, I just have to say this will be the most overwhelming decision in a poll. ESPN NFL 2K5 will win on CAG anyday. However a few people will get both since deals for Madden will come.

ESPN gets my vote.

The marketing ploy of the ESPN games works like a charm. I already have the NFL and will be getting the NHL 2k5's, whereas I usually get Madden and NHL 200X. EA loyalist for hockey since NHLPA Hockey '93, converted by the $20 price point. Go figure.

NFL 2K5 is pretty damn sweet, if you ask me. Totally satisfied, though I'm still adjusting to the *weird* running style. I'm used to following blockers and having the blockers... do... something. Adjustments to follow.

$30 price difference is hard to ignore. Ill be picking up ESPN. Im sure it will outsell Madden; no doubt.

yeah it's no shock the xbox live league filled up so fast. Most CAGs got it for around 15 bucks it's also going to be no shock when 2k5 blows madden out of the water in the poll. I mean more of the people here just won't drop 50 bucks on a new game.

Im not getting either because Im not in to sports, but my brother is getting Madden, dispite the simular ratings and cheaper price of ESPN.

I might get NFL 2k5 because of the price, however my sports game interest has been low this generation of consoles.

the two Football game players in my family who are getting Madden on release date had no idea that the ESPN titles were coming out, price point be damned... Madden will still outsell ESPN ... interesting to see what marketshare they can nab, and if they will do the same thing next year.
i wonder how much sega is actually making per game sold? or are they simply breaking even?
It will take them longer to make money, but after all is said and done, I am sure they will make some money.

Yeah working in EB and selling ESPN I can definetly say Madden will outsell ESPN. There are just too many hardcore Madden people who refuse to try anything else.

Example:

Today at work we had ESPN NFL 2k5 in the PS2 and XBOX. A guy asks me when Madden comes out, I tell him and suggest he try out ESPN since it's right there an no ones playing. He says to me "fuck you, don't try that shit on me, I'm not buying your suckass Madden wannabe for 20 bucks. I'll get Madden when it comes out."

A shame since ESPN NFL 2k5 is incredible and the price point makes it even MORE incredible. Oh well, he's the one spending 30 extra dollars.

I'm so glad I don't work in retail anymore. If someone had talked to me like that on the street I probably would've punched them in the throat.

Madden will outsell NFL2K5 because of the casual gamer...The casual gamer who I may add is the reason that the PS2 is the top selling console by a mile, even though it's specs are well below the Xbox and the Gamecube...Hardcore gamers like us will probably go with NFL2k5 simply because we buy like a game a week...

wasn't ever planning on getting madden...i the price and the reviews weren't right on ESPN i wouldn't have gotten that one either....ESPN is a great title for the price....worth the 16 bucks spent :p

I personally getting ESPN 2K5, but there's still a lot of ballers, shot-callers, that find it hip to play Madden, and that tends to be the same audience that picks up Madden on August XX, 19XX/200X every year. The question really comes down to, how many people who don't buy an American Football game regularly will pick up on the $20 EPSN?

I've been partial to the 2K series since 9/9/99. Madden will never get me back after dumping on the Dreamcast. This gamer will never forget.

The $20 price point for me is a gimme. Unfortunately Madden will outsell ESPN 4-1. This price point only matters to educated gamers that already knew the two series were neck and neck in quality to begin with. The blind legions of casuals still won't touch it.

I can't say this with as much hatred as I used to, now that EA supports Live, oh well. Down with Madden!!! But really, ESPN has a better price and better gameplay, is there any competition? Oh, wait, there is, all the casual gamers who own a PS2 just for the sports games...

while the poll is dominated by espn, just dont forget this is CAG after all. most of us rarely buy games at $50 therefore espn has the upper hand. as for the public, madden is a household name so i will not be surprised if madden has more overall sales. also, madden is on 6 different systems (gba, ps1, ps2, pc, gcn, xbx) while espn is only on ps2 and xbx

Madden will outsell 2K5 but nowhere near as bad as it did last year. Last year they did outsold 2k5 10-1. This year, they will be lucky to get 4-1.

As for the rest of your statement, I couldn't disagree more.

1) Casual gamers WILL pick this up because it is $20. Less of an investment risk.

2) Better hardware doesn't equal better console. It's the games that make the system. THAT is why PS2 is the leader.

lets see
20 bucks for roster updates
50 bucks for roster updates

both games are like a 8/10 to me which one um

20 or 50 for the same thing

I will say we can blame/praise nfl street and others for getting sports games out of the mold of coming out a few weeks before the real sport starts.

that's all i have to say

BTW, I picked up the game and it really is awesome.

Madden will still outsell ESPN this year, but chances are most Madden fans have already picked up ESPN.

Football fans, especially gamers, are notoriously impatient for football to start. They'll get their hands on ANYTHING football related around this time of the year. Now that ESPN is out 2 weeks before Madden and is ONLY $20, chances are even Madden fanboys have already gotten it.

With the price drop, I will buy every sports game new that Sega is putting out this year when normally I only buy football new and the other sports titles used and below $10. I would have bought NFL 2k5 for $50 anyway.

I'm getting both, but not playing $50 for Madden...more like $29.77 thanx to my Target raincheck :) So I will have both for $50, which works for me...

please excuse my ignorance and off topic post but what is the Target raincheck and why/how/what can you get a discount on?

use the search feature, dude.

Just got my 2k5 copy and so far I'm quite impressed. If the entire series has this type of quality, I'll probably buy NHL2k5 also and retire my NHL2001. I only wish they did a college football because I'd get that too.

ESPN, after playing NFL 2K, I can't stand Madden's gameplay. I really hope people give Sega Sports a chance this year because I feel they are much better games than EA's but go ignored because casual gamers only look for the EA logo on the box when buying sports games.

At work there's 6 people I know who get Madden every year and all picked up ESPN this year when they saw the price and heard how great the game is. A couple of them are so blown away that they said they might not even get Madden and may even really mean it.

Great move by Sega on both the price and beating the Madden release date by 3 weeks.

Madden has yet to let me down, and until that happens I don't see a reason to jump ship. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get a decent deal through some trade-in offer or sale somewhere.

Madden has yet to let me down

Madden has let me down every single year by not supporting Xbox Live (until now), only making marginal improvements to their game each year, and not taking advantage of the Xbox's graphical capability (lowest common denominator like so many other multiplatform games).

Plus John Madden is a big fat idiot and I'd rather listen to those voice actors in 2k5 (they're pretty good considering one was the voice of Launchpad McQuack).

CHEAP ASS $20 bargain game

I would not call ESPN NFL 2K5 a "bargain game". Its probably the better game of the two.

And I would argue that cheap ass gamers wouldn't be as biased as a certain fanboy because they would certainly be able to find Madden 2005 for around $30.

new game? that's why it's $20, sega thought, all we do is update and throw more features in, why charge 50 when they can go out and buy Sudeki the same day and get a truly new game. it doesn't hurt them and they've probably made more than they would have for months with it being so cheap.

i love the game along with all my other 2k games. (12-16 games).

i bought NCAA 2004 from ea for 10 bucks and don't really like it.
the controls change too much between offense and defense. that and i just don't like the feel. i, like always, won't touch madden this year as usally, but have gotten 2k5, and when it was a new game, not clearance.
