2010-2011 NHL Regular Season Thread

The Devils have made many smart moves over the years including signing in my opinion the best free agent available this Summer, Anton Volchenkov. I think signing Kovalchuk to anything over 7 million a year is a mistake.
In other news, Kovalchuk reporetdly staying with the Devils:
Yeah Probert had a season where he scored almost 30 goals while having 400 penalty minutes in 1988.
One of the best things about Probert was you knew Yzerman was untouchable while Probert was with the Wings. Anyone who who looked at Stevie the wrong way was risking an ass beating. The star players today take a ton of cheap shots because that intimidation factor isn't present.

For you guys who didn't see while it was happening guys like the "Bruise Brothers" Probert and Kocur were as big of an attraction to the game as the games biggest goal scorers. When teams with heavyweights would play the Wings it was a spectacle. I'm not exaggerating. These guys took boxing lessons at the famous Kronk Gym of Detroit. Hell I remember them running a "tale of the tape" with boxing stats in the newspaper before a game.

You ain't kidding. I seriously doubt he'll ever have a 50-goal season, but I could be surprised.

All of the ex-enforcers are gone now. McSorley, Grimson, Domi. I miss those guys. Sure, you still have tough guys, but the role they play just isn't the same as it was 20 years ago.
The Sharks are putting the squeeze on the Hawks defense. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=327071
interesting, hard to imagine the blackhawks matching it with their cap situation.

on the flipside, the sharks also have a tight cap, and 3.5 mil cap hit cant be taken on without someone leaving. its a crowded blue line right now. boyle, murray, vlasic, huskins, wallin, leach, demers. and they still need to sign 3 forwards including setoguchi with a little over 3 million in cap space if this deal were to go through. someone will have to go. the two names thrown around in sharks circles most often are murray or clowe.

Maybe he signed Leach and wallin to trade them and huskins for one decent D player... :\

makes zero sense to not only sign wallin and huskins, but give the raises (huskins last year) if the intention is to trade them.

The president of my company just told me that he got to meet Jeremy Roenick last week at Gibson's Steakhouse. They were outside at the valet getting their cars, and he walk up to Jeremy and got to shake his hand and chat for a brief moment. That's pretty cool.

Shit the Hawks really need to keep Hjalmarrson(sp lol?). I really hope they can pull some financial strings and match this offer for one of the best young D-men in hockey.

They can't and they won't because they are in cap hell. They already lost Versteeg and Buff, Sharp should be on his out by start of the season too. Hawks fans can keep celebrating this summer, but they won't be winning another cup any time soon I'm afraid.

Actually depending on what deal they sign Niemi to and making one or two more moves they could keep him. We will see what happens I guess, hoping for the best. And it's premature to say the HAwks can't win another title anytime soon. They will still have Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Hossa, Niemi, and a few other good young players. I will take that lineup over 95% of the other lineups in the NHL.

Actually, Hjalmarsson was presented with an offer sheet from the Sharks for 4 years/$14M. The Hawks can't match that with their current cap space.

As far as their roster goes, it's good for what it is right now. Cap hit and actual salary are also totally different. Depending on the contract terms that each player signed, the Hawks are in cap hell now and possibly next season as well. Remember, the younger and more talented they are, the more money and years they will want in the future. Toews and Kane are signed long term, but I don't know about Keith or Seabrook.
Zherdev signed a one-year deal with Philly. I like this kid. Hope he plays with Giroux.
He signed for a bargain basement deal. Unfortunately, that means Gagne will probably be on his way out and Philly still needs a solid goalie.

Bruins development camp (this years picks + guys still in junior hockey + NCAA) was packed the entire time it ran, they were turning people away today.

Seguin is the real deal. Joe Colborne (16th pick in 08) looks like he can step in this year, Jordan Caron (25th pick in 09) is close, Jared Knight (32nd pick this year) needs a little time but he's a sniper, great pickup at 32. Ryan Spooner (45th this year) is drawing comparisons to Krejci.

They haven't had this many high end prospects in a long time. Thanks Toronto!
Do you think they'd trade Gagne before Carter?
Absolutely. Gagne is too expensive and injury prone for them at the moment.

Goods news for Hawks fans. Hjalmarsson is resigned. The bad news is the team has only around $100,000 grand in cap space left and only 15 players under contract.

dafoomie- Are the Bruins trying to force Savard out of town?

disappointed by this. but whatever, itll be interesting to see who gets moved on the hawks for them to match this.

Would love the Penguins to be able to get Patrick Sharp from them for some picks or prospects.

Thanks God they were smart and decided to match the offer. A top 5 NHL defenseman (according to the Sharks anyways) who is still very young is more important than even Niemi at this point.
dafoomie- Are the Bruins trying to force Savard out of town?
Not quite, they have cap problems and they consider him expendable now that they have Seguin, plus they really want another solid defenseman. There isn't really any behind the scenes stuff going on, and he's healthy.

They have other players who they'd rather dump first, Ryder, etc but Savard might be the only one they'd deal that teams actually want. I don't expect him to go anywhere though, they might have to buy out Ryder or send him to the minors, if not now then when Marco Sturm comes back from his surgery in December/January.

It's an odd feeling being an Avs fan in the franchise rebuilding mode during the cap era. Instead of looking forward to a big name defenseman signing I'm trying to figure out what the team will do to reach the cap floor. All with a young talented core that made the playoff last year.

It's sad to see what the hawks are going through. Win the cup and break out the scissors.

I'd love to have Zach Parise or Bobby Ryan on Stastny's left wing. Maybe in my BAGM in September.

a 17 year deal is just ridiculous, it blatant cap cheating and teams just keep getting away with it. The Islanders have gotten bite by it with DiPietro but I really wish the Red Wings would get screwed by those deals. As a Penguin fan I also hope bad things for the Red Wings. Also Kovulchuk is a loser and will never lead NJ anywhere.

these long term deals have to be dealt with during the next CBA. kovys deal takes the cake for sure, but there are plenty of other ones out there that, like you said, are blatant cap cheating.

Honestly who really believes Kovy will be playing when he's 43-44 years old. I would have more respect for a team to sign someone to a 45 year deal and get the cap hit down to about 1 million dollars.

Next contract the Pens should sign Crosby to a 30 year/134 million dollar contract. Have the last 16 years for 1 million and we would only have a cap hit of 4.4. Give Malkin the same deal and we will finally get some quality wingers.

Gagne to Tampa for Matt Walker and a 4th. They pretty much gave him away.

Philly needed to move a defenseman before, now they've got 8 under contract. Tampa just became a serious team, not sold on Ellis though.

If the Bolts can get decent goaltending they'll be a really fun team to watch this season.

Oh, I'm definitely going to a game in February down there now.

DarrenDreger’s twitter

Kovy’s deal was rejected because the NHL doesn’t believe either the player or the Devils expected he would be playing near end of deal

Hossa can play until 42 but Kovy can't play until he's 44?

I think the biggest problem is there are like 5 or 6 years at the end of the deal where he makes $500,000. They just made it too blatant.

From Capgeek:

last 4 years of:
Hossa--$4 million
Luongo--$5 million
Franzen--$7.5 million
Zetterberg--$12.4 million
Lecavalier--$15 million

Kovalchuk--$2.2 million, and he'd be older than all those guys. And his no-movement clause becomes a no-trade clause, which means if he didn't retire they could just send him to the AHL.
Hossa can play until 42 but Kovy can't play until he's 44?
8 people in the history of the NHL have played at 44 or older. 4 of them were backup goalies.

Hossa's deal was very close to being rejected but they let it stand since they had not yet established any guidelines.
