My mini predictions...

Best Picture- The King's Speech
Best Director- David Fincher (The Social Network)
Leading Actor- Colin Firth (the King's Speech)
Leading Actress- Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
Supporting Actor- Christian Bale (The Fighter)
Supporting Actress- Haliee Steinfeld (True Grit)

black swan should do a clean sweep that movie was awesome but more times than not the people who deserve to win dont. like when jamie fox won over don cheadle. the nerd from zombieland will win best actor.

It won't, it wasn't even that good of a movie, and Jesse Eisenberg won't win. Colin Firth is a lock.

Black Swan was an amazing movie but True Grit was my favorite of the year, unfortunately The King's Speech will win almost everything. The only award I'm really looking forward to is Trent Reznor winning for Best Score for The Social Network.

Black Swan is an amazing film, but I doubt I'll buy it. I might see it one more time somewhere down the line. That said if Natalie doesn't get the Oscar, I don't know what to say.
It's a great psychological mindfuck, I was interested the entire time. And it was sexy.
what he said and i also enjoyed the music and getting a view into a world i dont know much about.

or how denzel won for talking about king kong

Black Swan was way too hokey and cliched for me. At times when I was supposed to be horrified, I laughed. But the performances were indeed excellent by pretty much everyone. That saved the movie.
How could people like Black Swan?! There was some great acting in there but the movie itself wasn't very good.
Black Swan was an excellent movie. It was a very unique role for Portman. She played the character very well. I almost lol when this lady and her tween daughter got up and left the theater after the lesbian scene.

This and Inception should be the top runners for the award...but I wouldn't be surprised if the facebook movie one. It was alright , not great but alright.
or how denzel won for talking about king kong
eh i thought he was cool in that movie definelty a big step away from his usual safe roles but not anywhere near as gpood as his performance in glory. who was he up against for that oscar?

i also dont think halle berry deserved the oscar for monsters ball. the movie was shit and in the end she got an oscar for showing her tits and rubbing one out on camera.

the chick who played her mom was amazing in her role as an obsessed mother.

LMAO @ Inception. Another overrated movie.

I would say out of all the movies I saw this year, I'd probably pick The Social Network if it were up to me. But I didn't see too much this year. I didn't see True Grit or The King's Speech. The only ones nominated for Best Picture that I did see were Black Swan, Inception, The Social Network, and Toy Story 3. And the only one that deserves it out of those is The Social Network IMO.

And the award goes to...

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published
The Social Network

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year
Toy Story 3

Best Documentary, Features
Exit Through the Gift Shop

I will only be happy if True Grit wins a few awards. I, too, didn't like Black Swan all that much and thought True Grit and The King's Speech are much better movies.

I'd also like to see Special Effects go to Iron Man 2 because, well, I love Iron Man.

What I really want, however, is for Exit Through the Gift Shop to win best Documentary. Really good stuff there.

IMHO ...the King's Speech was WAY over ratted. I fell asleep 4 freaking times during that movie. DOK you really need to give Inception a few more viewings. That was an incredible movie!

Don't you know that all the awards shows (Oscars, Golden Globes, etc) are only about indie films about character development. King's Speech is just that. Those types of movies win everything.

As for my predictions, what won at the Golden Globes will most likely win the same stuff at the Oscars. Just basing it on history.

And I'd call The Social Network more overrated than any of those movies. It was good at best. I have not seen The King's Speech but The Social Network was my least favorite out of those you listed.

I've seen all the best pics noms except for Toy Story 3 and The Kids Are All Right. I'd probably give it Inception. Black Swan is my favorite movie of the year with some amazing performances, I'd give Aronosfky Best Director without a second thought.

I've seen all of the Best Picture nominees but 127 Hours (really wanted to see it but it was at my theater for a week).

The King's Speech- Great story, will probably win the most oscars.
Social Network- Overrated. Good film but I just don't see Best Picture material.
Inception- The one film on this list, except for maybe Toy Story 3, that people will still be watching a long time from now.
Toy Story 3- Even after 11 years, Woody and Buzz don't get old.
Black Swan- Great artistic value, excellent acting, I'm probably never going to watch it again
True Grit- Great film, could see this stealing the Best Picture
The Kid's Are All Right- Hated it
The Fighter- Best boxing film since Raging Bull
Winter's Bone- Not a bad film, would like to see it win at least one oscar

I really do not understand why TKS is so highly praised? I fell asleep 4 freaking times!!! It was an okay movie. Sure it didn't have great special effects, action, explosions, Machete (Just kidding :D ) , score and so on.

Inception is a movie that requires multiple viewings. An incredible movie worth a sequel.

Toy Story 3.....was good...but after waiting 11 years..that's just way too long for a highly anticipated movie. I am glad they adjusted the story forward to a few years instead of keeping it around in the past.

BS-Again one of Portman's finest moments.

True Grit- Pretty good film. JB's performance was better than TL...could you imagine if she was a bit taller and built more how many other roles she would be cast for?

The Fighter...although I was not looking forward to this, I actually enjoyed it in the end.

I wonder why Conviction was never mentioned? That was a great story. What about Tangled?

So far out of best picture nominees I've seen:

Inception--great. I'm not big into action movies, but Nolan makes great ones that are good films on top of great action

Black Swan--fantastic. Great performances, atmosphere etc.

True Grit--Good, but not great IMO. Good performances, but drug at times.

Winter's Bone--very good and heart wrenching.

Toy Story 3--It was good, but I liked the first 2 a lot more and still think Up is the best Pixar movie

Will watch the others when I can get them from Netflix. Out of the one's I've seen I'd vote for Black Swan. But it seems pretty likely that The Social Network will win since it's been cleaning up other best picture awards.

I love watching and guessing on the Oscars...I run a movie theater so I outta care. Plus the Oscars are on my birthday again this year...fun times. I try my best to win the Oscar pools too...this year seems pretty tough. ;) So here's my picks:

I agree with pretty much all your picks and predictions except I'm not sure whether I'd want G.Rush to win over Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor.
I agree with pretty much all your picks and predictions except I'm not sure whether I'd want G.Rush to win over Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor.
As much as I appreciate Geoffry Rush, Christian Bale's performence was one of the best I've seen in years. it was great. If Justin Timberlake wins it, I will shut my TV off.

Yea, I agree. I think its a tough one to choose because I really liked both performances. Without Geoffry Rush...King's Speech would not have been as good as it was.

...I also want to say my favorite movies in the best pic category are Toy Story 3, The King's Speech, Inception, Black Swan, and True Grit (pretty much in that order too). The Fighter was good and so was, The Social Network (too hyped up by the time I had time to watch it). I never saw 127 hours because it didn't come to my theater.

The kings speech was alright. My bro in law who is the vp of weinstein is probably happy tks won so much, but I personally wanted inception to win. Most of the movies were remakes or just biographies... Was bluie valentine nominated for best picture? I prefer that over tks.

Weinstein is the company that produced tks, blue valentine and handled foreign release of the fighter.

whoever thought it was a good idea to have kirk douglas come out probably got fired lol. i respect the guys work and his iconic status but he drug down the pace of the show bigtime and his jokes with the ladies came off creepy.

So, I missed the Oscars.

Any upsets? I'm assuming since Google isn't lighting up, that there was at least one upset: Anne Hathaway's dress didn't experience a malfunction.

I was flipping back and forth between the Oscars and a few other things. Most notable was the inability to produce live television. Franco should have been pulled mid-show to let Anne Hathaway really shine. Then again, she should have been told to stop that "whooping" noise anytime someone more famous than her came out (basically everyone). She's very watchable and seems to be naturally excited about what she's doing, just doesn't have the greatest chops quite yet.

Also, who knew that Chuck could sing?!?
I was flipping back and forth between the Oscars and a few other things. Most notable was the inability to produce live television. Franco should have been pulled mid-show to let Anne Hathaway really shine.
Yeah, Franco looked completely high and like he could not give less of a fuck. That made it kinda entertaining though, especially when he got those "I am so high right now" looks on his face.

As for the awards... I'm fine with them, except for a couple that I'd change (directing and documentary). I would've been okay with almost any of the ten movies nominated for Best Picture taking home the award, except for Toy Story 3 and True Grit. Both of which are fantastic films, just not really on the same level as the other eight.

I don't really care about this crap because the Oscars are nonsense, but my one real pet category this year was best original score, for John Powell's How To Train Your Dragon score. fuck you, it was by far the best score this year, and for that matter, probably the best film score since Howard Shore's landmark work on The Lord of the Rings. Yes, The King's Speech score was good, but fairly predictable period piece music, and Inception's score was thunderously awesome in the context of that movie and a perfect tailor-made fit, but lacked subtlety (like the rest of the movie, I guess) and was too bombastic to stand on it's own. It's great when accompanying the movie, but unlike most of the greatest movie scores, it isn't terribly listenable as stand-alone music.

Dragon's score was vast, memorable, compelling, full of great themes and leitmotifs and tons of character that are not only great apart but also interact with and complement each other perfectly to create a totally cohesive whole, beautifully and deeply arranged, and pretty much unlike anything I've ever heard in a score for an animated film. Of course, the first time you see the movie, the score is enchanting and sweeps you off your feet throughout the entire adventure, but if you later go listen to the score album on it's own a few times on some good audio equipment and really pay attention and listen actively and explore, you'll discover a wealth of little beneath-the-surface details that you probably missed while hearing it for the first time mixed with the rest of the movie audio (a quiet choir voice here, a little violin section there, et cetera), that reveal a wealth of undiscovered moods and feelings and emotions and depth and subtlety in the music, and if you then go watch the movie again, with all of those new musical details you've picked up and are listening for now feeding back into the world and feel of the film, it makes that world even more rich and whole and full and mesmerizing that it was before. This score just keeps on giving and giving and giving, in and out of the movie, the more you listen to and explore it.

That's the sign of a truly great film score, when you can discover more of it on it's own, and it then adds back to the movie in new ways the next time you watch it. When you listen to the Inception score on it's own, it's still pretty much the same BRWAAAAAAHM sledgehammer-to-the-ear you hear in the movie itself, and that's just about all you'll ever get out of it. Again, a perfectly fitting score to a very good movie, but it just doesn't compare to Powell's work on Dragon, which I also think was something of a creative breakthrough for him in particular, compared to his past work, bigger, braver, more thoughtful, and more free.

Giving the score award to The Social Network was an absolute joke. For crying out loud, it sounds like Reznor just recycled Ghosts I-IV or something. Blah. It's fairly obvious to me that the voters were just wanting to pad out The Social Network's trophy count, after giving everything else to King's Speech and The Fighter.

With my score rant out of the way, I'm not even going to start in on HTTYD the movie itself, and how it grows and flourishes the same way the score does the more you explore it. The first time I saw it, I left the theater thinking "well, that was pretty cute and fun," amused but not totally floored or aware of how special it was, but after watching it again, and then again and again and again, really thinking about the movie, it's art and animation, the direction, the world and characters, all the parts put together, it's utter sincerity and lack of sarcasm or irony, the movie grew and grew until I now consider it to be almost certainly the greatest, most innovative, and most fearlessly directed CGI animated film ever made. As far as I'm concerned, How To Train Your Dragon is flawless, and sorry Pixar, but even the mighty Toy Story 3 caved in to cowardly conventions on a couple of occasions, and the fact that the rest of the movie is so mature and so great only ends up making those couple of missteps that much more painful and jarring to watch in comparison. I can absolutely understand if someone thinks that Toy Story 3 is overall better than HTTYD and that it's flaws don't lower it that much, but I insist that it be recognized that it does have a couple painful mistakes, and in my opinion, HTTYD has none. At any rate, one hell of a year for CGI animated films!
I really do not understand why TKS is so highly praised? I fell asleep 4 freaking times!!! It was an okay movie. Sure it didn't have great special effects, action, explosions, Machete (Just kidding :D ) , score and so on.
Uh yeah, I don't think you're really the intended audience of this sort of film award show.

Inception is a movie that requires multiple viewings. An incredible movie worth a sequel.
Yeah, definitely not.

Toy Story 3.....was good...but after waiting 11 years..that's just way too long for a highly anticipated movie. I am glad they adjusted the story forward to a few years instead of keeping it around in the past.
The span of time, and the changes that come with it, are the exact dramatic crux of Toy Story 3, both internally, in the story of the movie, but also externally, in terms of how long it's been since we've seen the characters, and how much we've all grown up since then. Even if it was the exact same movie, frame-for-frame, it wouldn't have had even remotely the same impact as if it had been released in 2002, for instance. Toy Story 3's true triumph was how it took a duology that stood on it's own as a creatively complete work that would have stood the test of time forever, that nobody thought needed anything else added, and then added a final chapter that as soon as we saw it, we suddenly realize was absolutely necessary and essential to truly complete the work, and to grow the whole thing, including it's predecessors, into something bigger, a whole even greater than the sum of it's parts. The span of time since TS1 and TS2 has only served to increase their reputation and solidify the notion that a sequel wasn't necessary, which makes TS3's success as not just a sequel, but a great sequel that really adds something that the series could now never do without, all the more impressive.
whoever thought it was a good idea to have kirk douglas come out probably got fired lol. i respect the guys work and his iconic status but he drug down the pace of the show bigtime and his jokes with the ladies came off creepy.
Don't disrespect Spartacus. That was the only tolerable part of the show, hosting-wise.
The kings speech was alright. My bro in law who is the vp of weinstein is probably happy tks won so much, but I personally wanted inception to win. Most of the movies were remakes or just biographies...
Which of them (I assume you mean the best picture nominees) were remakes or biographies?

Between Kirk saying "you know" over and over and all the digs at Hugh Jackman, I thought it was a pretty good show. Franco definitely looked bored, especially when he said "congratulations, nerds". Funniest moment by far was the Autotune segment. And was it just me, or did Christian Bale forget his wife's name during his acceptance speech?

As far as awards go, I wish Black Swan received more awards than the overrated Inception. But I was very happy to see Natalie Portman win as she truly worked her ass off in that movie. Writing credit for Social Network was well deserved and Sorkin was very classy in his acceptance speech. I was also glad to see Alice in Wonderland get some wins as I'm a big fan of Tim Burton's work.

PS, while we're on the subject, I'd like to point out how stupid it is that they made the Best Animated Feature Film category completely redundant this year. It was a foregone conclusion that Toy Story 3 was going to win it, as soon as they announced the nominees. Notice how TS3 was also nominated for Best Picture, the sole movie to be nominated for both that and Best Animated Film. Now, whether TS3 won Best Picture or not, just the fact that it was nominated for the Best Picture category, giving it even a theoretical (if not practical or likely) chance of winning it, meant that logically, it had to win Best Animated Film, otherwise, it's nomination alone in the general Best Picture category wouldn't have made any sense.

Here's a hypothetical situation: If, for instance, The Illusionist had won Best Animated Picture, meaning it's better than TS3, then how could they possibly have justified TS3 even being in the running for Best Picture category, but not The Illusionist, when it's win in Best Animated Picture would indicate it's superiority? If TS3 even had a chance of being Best Picture, and if it did, then how could you explain a situation where TS3 won Best Picture, but it lost out in a more specific but basically equal category to another movie?

So, yeah, it was a logical guarantee that TS3 had won Best Animated Picture, as soon as they announced the nominees, which is completely fucking stupid and an insult to the Best Animated Film category, and the other movies in it. They did this same shit last year, with Up, putting it in the Best Picture runnings, and again, making the Best Animated Film category a foregone conclusion with no point.

For christ's sake, the Academy just needs to create a "Best Pixar Film Of The Year" category and fucking be done with it, because it's obvious that that's all the Best Animated Film category is ever going to be.
