Ya know, if A-Rod ever wanted to prove that he was a decent human being and a "true Yankee", he'd offer to restructure his contract so the team could keep some of their expiring contracts (Swisher) and still have money to go after some decent free agents. I'd say the same for Jeter, but he's at least producing. A-Rod has to be aware that his contract is the worst in baseball, and he's nowhere even close to living up to it. Eric Chavez is no spring chicken either and has injury problems of his own, and they're still getting basically the same production out of him. Unless Jeter shares his miracle cure with Alex, I don't see him turning it around either. I'd like to be wrong, but I seriously doubt it.

Players Union would sadly never approve of A-rod restructuring his contract.
 
Hate to say it but I think the Yankees are toast. The pitching is mediocre and the offense is anemic, and I don't see them getting out of the rut before the end of the year.

If they had he wouldn't even be the Yanks concern. He would be playing in Boston.

Yep. The A-Rod to Boston is one of the most interesting what ifs of baseball. IIRC Texas would acquire Manny and Lester while the Sox would have Alex, Nomar and Magglio in their prime.

Great in theory, but the MLBPA would never let him do it. Remember when he agreed to do it to go to Boston?

Honestly, the best the Yankees can hope for is the Dodgers want him this offseason. They'll take him no questions asked.

Wouldn't be the worst choice, but I'd probably have to go Kershaw, all things being equal. He's having another really good season, and I haven't heard a peep about him all year. And I live in California. If Gio had thrown more innings I think he'd be in the mix too.

Fewer walks makes up for the fewer Ks for Dickey. I'd give it to Kershaw, but it's much closer than "all the way," especially when Dickey's SIERA edges Kershaw's.

In terms of how the actual vote is going to go, unless Dickey falls apart, I've got to think he'll get it.
 
Feeling better about the Braves now. Struggles the past couple weeks had me worrying about another collapse.

But they took 3 out of 4 from the Rockies, and game 1 from the Mets last night. Have a pretty favorable schedule this month two with this series against the Mets, and then the Brewers, Nats, Marlins, Phillies, Marlins, Mets and Pirates to finish out the season.
 
There's a part of me that wants to see the Dodgers do well because it'll put a jolt into the Giants/Dodgers rival, but then there's the other part of me that's enjoying seeing them spend all this money and still scoring no runs.

Yea, it's been brutal on this side of it. And then Billingsley's arm falls off.

Bad bad bad. I'm curious to see what they'll do this offseason. Hyper aggressiveness isn't paying off but these guys seem ready to move heaven and earth. Who knows.

I think Kershaw has been better than Dickey but it's by no means a runaway and I could see Dickey getting it. Guy's been incredible this year.
 
I would be extremely happy to see the Phillies continue to make this playoff push but I'm not holding my breath. Funny that after trading Victorino and Pence they start to win.

I can't wait for someone to come into the sports marketplace and destroy ESPN. They really have gone down the shitter the past 10 or so years. That place is basically just bland tabloid sports journalism at this point. It's Extra or Access Hollywood for sports (as long as those sports are Football and College).

Getting back to the baseball talk., Adrian Beltre is a fucking beast. If he hadn't pulled his hammy and hit like this all season he would be the MVP. He has been unreal since the start of August. If Josh wins MVP, he needs to thank Adrian because he is the reason he is getting pitches to hit.

The worst part is that regardless of what happens, Charlie will probably be back next year. I really want to see the Phillies get that 2nd Wild Card spot (that would be awesome to see the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams in the NL East all make the playoffs) but I've been really annoyed with some of the decisions Charlie has made this year and was hoping we'd be seeing Ryne Sandberg next season. Not having Chipper Jones intentionally walked with 1st base open in that horrible loss a week and a half ago is an example or how he keeps using Michael Martinez at 3rd base when they have Ty Wigginton and Pete Orr when Michael Martinez was batting around .120 up until a few days ago.

The next series with the Astros should be easy but I'm worried about the series with the Mets after that since the Phillies have struggled against them so many times this season.

Yeah, he really seems clueless a lot of the time. I hate seeing Bastardo warming up in the bullpen every 8th inning, he just doesn't have it anymore. And I never liked Martinez, he needs to go.

Yeah, those fucking Mets always give the Phils problems. If they can win that series, I'll have more confidence.
 
Braves followed up their strong stretch by getting swept in Milwaukee. Thankfully the Cards and Dodgers struggled as well, so they're still solid for the first wild card spot. Have the Nats at home this weekend.

Huge scramble for that second wild card in the NL. That will be fun to watch down the stretch.

I'd say that Cabrera is having a better season than Hamilton and Beltre. But than again, Trout should have no problems winning it unless voters go full retard. I think the NL race is much more close.

Wonder if Jeter will get a couple of 1st place votes if Yankees win the division though. Obviously no where close to Trout and Miggy statistically but he pretty much has carried the team in September. With out him, Yankees would be well behind Baltimore.

It's insane the pitching has been good, but Jesus they can only allow one run or were gonna lose. Hope next year is team gets some offense.
 
Medlen continues to be awesome for the Braves. Struck out 13 in 7 innings, gave up 1 run (a solo homer) and five hits, as the Braves beat the Nats 2-1. Walkoff on an error in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Braves bounce back from the sweep by the Brewers by sweeping the Nats. Pretty much have the first wild card spot locked up barring an extreme collapse.
 
What the Orioles have done this season really defies logic. They have a negative run differential...none of their overall team stats blow you away...and they can't lose 1-run games or extra inning affairs. It's amazing...

Those three things have little impact on how the Orioles have been wining games, though. They only impact the fact that the Orioles are in the playoff race.
 
Braves take two out of three in Miami.

Medlen continues to be dominant. Four hits and no runs over 8 innings. Struck out six. Era down to 1.51 on the season--.076 in starts. The Braves have won 21 straight games he's started now, dating back to 2009. Most since the Yankees won 22 straight games Whitey Ford started form 1950-53 (gap with him in Korean War).
 
Matt Kemp came up with a game winning homer in the 9th after the Dodgers blew a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the 8th to Washington. Man I was worried this could've been the season for us. After losing the first of a doubleheader a loss would have put us 3 games back with Stl. Cards for the 2nd wild card and the cards game still isnt final yet.
 
The Rangers *may* have put the final nail in the Angels coffin tonight. However, they are still in the hunt and anything can happen. Beltre coming back from his intestinal problem to hit the go-ahead 2-run blast was awesome.

Rangers have an easy (I hope) series in Seattle over the weekend then it's home for 4 to put away the A's and wrap the division up.
 
Pirates have really collapsed. Looked like they were finally going to have a winning season, but are a game under .500 now after being 10+ games above a month or two ago.
 
I am really excited for the Orioles this season. All of us in Baltimore are glad they are doing so well. Usually Orioles stuff is discounted cheap right now, but it's still at full price.

I'm always ready to BUCKleUp in extra innings.
 
Braves got a walk off homer from Freeman and have clinched a playoff berth.

Magic number to clinch homefield for the 1 game wild card play in is 3. Also 4 back from the Nats in the division, but unlikely they can make that up with games remaining.

Braves have also now won 22 straight games started by Kris Medlen, matching the all time record held by the Yankees/Whitey Ford. Got to like their chances in the wild card play in since he'll likely be on the mound.

That's probably what the league-wide rate was for anabolic steroid use, I don't have much of a reason to doubt it either.

The atmosphere in that stadium is positively crazy. It reminds me quite a bit of the nuttiness in Oakland during the Warriors/Mavs series in 2007. I'm half contemplating making the trek up from the southern half of the state to see a game there while the getting is good.
