2013 Thrift Store Thread

SAVERS had that by me and they know that I collect video games stuff (used to be there 2 hours per day 5 days a week minimum) and they priced it at 14.99 used. I just went to SAVERS for the first time in 2 months, they didn't have much. Price are still too high. I did sell a modem that I bought in the glory days for 1.99 on amazon for 69.95.

My school had that Pac Man game in the 3rd grade classroom.  We could only play it on rainy days.

What the heck kind of modem goes for $69.99?

A minor win for me today:

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds $2

also saw a Delta Force expansion pack, Red Baron and the usual bunch of Edutainment titles hidden in the CD section.

1984 $.50

Then what I consider wins:

Logan's Run and West Side Story on DVD for $3 apiece.

Not good for flipping but my DVD collection appreciates me more now.

Not a huge bargain or anything but scored Final Fantasy IX (complete, fair condition on all 4 discs) South Park Chefs Love Shack (N64) and a N64 controller that doesnt have a screwed up joystick for about $20 total (Which is actually great for my town lol)

Savers is weird with their pricing. They'll sometimes put good stuff out at a low price, and it'll sell right away, so the next time they'll put out a combination of crap and good stuff at a stupid high price, and it'll sit on the shelf for a month before getting tossed in the dumpster. Then the next time after that they'll put stuff out for cheap again.

can't believe I actually found something at my local Goodwill. a Nintendo 64 with controller but no power or video cables for $13 but with a stuck reset button which I decided to leave and an FC Twin SNES controller for $3 which I picked up since I needed a cheap 2nd controller for my SNES and the real and knockoffs are always $10-$15 at the swap meet

I recently found a super deal at a Goodwill by me.  Bioshock Infinite for PC!  It had no price tag but I'm 90% certain the girl rang up only $1 or $2 for it.  The Steam key WORKED too!  [/bragging]

I just moved to my new house, which is less than a mile from a Goodwill.  They price the DVD style games $6 flat (unlike the older one I lived closer to that did $3, which is my sweet spot for games), but I did manage to find a few things stashed in the CD / music section.  Picked up :wii: Wii Sports, :wii: Wii Sports Resort and Road Rash for $3 each, which the Wii titles were the cardboard sleeve versions.

I found a Legend Of Zelda Phantom Hourglass softcover guide for $1.49. It's missing the map from the back & has some creases on the front & back covers in the upper corners. Decent for a read copy.

THAT is yesterday's Goodwill haul.

$2.99:
-Phantasy Star Online (Xbox)
-Dark Cloud (PS2)
-Drakan The Ancient Gates (PS2)
-Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
-Ratchet and Clank (PS2)
-Ratchet and Clank Going Commando (PS2)
-Vexx (PS2)
-Tourist Trophy (PS2) (disc is actually Gran Turismo 3, I didn't notice because I was excited that there was a memory card in the box. Going to go back and try to exchange it today.)
-Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
-GTA Vice City (PS2)
-Star Ocean Till The End of Time (PS2)

(the GREAT ones)
-Super Smash Bros. Melee (Gamecube)
-Starfox Adventures (Gamecube)
-Soul Caliber II (Gamecube)
-Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem (Gamecube)

99 Cents:
-Chrono Cross (PS1)
-Civilization V (PC) (Brand new factory sealed!)

$4:
The Sanyo TV for hooking up and playing older consoles

$5:
-Hunted The Demon's Forge (PS3) (Was marked at $10 but it was half price day at another thrift store)

Hands down my best day video game thrifting yet!!!

Trying to sell that Civilization V. I put it on craigslist for $20 late last night and no bites yet. I'm just wondering if everybody who wants to play it has it by now. I think it's been down to around $8 on Steam.

edit: Forgot the N64 Rumble pack for $3. (And the Elton John's Greatest Hits for $2.)

Went to 4 stores today.   One had some original Xbox games but all for $5 and mostly just sports titles...nothing special.

Did end up buying a 5 drawer Sterilite container for $3 just needed a slight cleaning.

and the real kicker....a pair of Vibram TrekSport shoes for $4.  They look brand new.  They retail for $100.

Decent day.  I've never had luck in thrift stores regarding video games but I can find some steals.

Picked up a few cart only genesis games today for $1.99 each

-Vectorman
-Talespin
-Mutant League Football
-Valis III

Also for $2.99 each I picked up a TG-16 coaxial cable and AC adaptor that they had lying around. Makes me wonder if I missed out on a TurboGrafx lot...but hey, since I sold my TG and realized I want it back, now I can just buy one without the cables :)

and the lady threw in a standard black GameCube memory card

Total F*CK moment today. I get there and see a dude holding a Super Gameboy cartridge, hear him say "dang thats it, I think someone got the system". Then his buddy was all like "dude look heres some games" and then eventually finds the system. Another friend walks up and they eventually have like 25 games. They got a mini SNES for $8 and at least Super Mario Kart, a Super Gameboy, Super Mario Allstars, and Donkey Kong Countrys but thats all I found out. Dude sees my NES controller tshirt and says "looking for games?" and I was like "honestly I see youve beaten me to the punch". He tells me about some little bag he left some games in and I check it out after they leave with the goods. I end up with these for $3 apiece.-

Ascii Pad, Super Pad, official controller, Congos Caper, Super Wrestlemania, Jurassic Park, Wheel Of Fortune Deluxe Edition, Bubsy, Tiny Tiny Toons Buster Busts Loose, Mario Paint, Pinball Dreams, Ms Pacman, Pac Attack, Space Invaders, Killer Instinct, and Super Offroad The Baja.

Those ASCIIpads are great controllers. They're officially licensed and I think they use the same PCB and buttons as the official SNES controllers, but with the turbo commands added. I actually prefer them to the official controllers.

That controller on the right is interesting because it was sold with the mini/SNES Jr. and if you look on the back it actually has a super famicom logo. Really strange that they would sell that in the US.

I never noticed that before. I have my mini-SNES sitting here and just checked the controller. Odd.

I think Nintendo at the time was trying to cut costs, and maybe it was a way for them to use the same controller shells for the different SNES/Super Famicom consoles they were selling at the time. They would have to put in whatever color buttons to go with whatever system they go with.

I stopped at 3 Goodwills and picked up:

purple official gamecube controller-$5

Wii U mic-$1.50

PS3 guitar hero guitar-$2.50

Wii guitar hero guitar-$2.00

Wii Rockband drum set-$7.50

PC Ms. Pac-Man-$1.00

PC Pac-Man All Stars-$1.00

Makes sense since that dude did have a mini SNES in his hands.

Picked up another copy of Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess for $3 today. This one did have the booklet. Saw Super Tennis for SNES in a bin, now im paranoid that I missed another SNES LOLz. They also had like 30 PS2 and Xbox games, nuttin but crap!

Picked up a cart only copy of Pokemon Stadium on Saturday for $2.  Also saw a copy of Goldeneye for the same price, but I don't have an N64 and figured I'd let someone who could actually play it pick that one up.  Also had a ton of sports games.

Saw Evil Dead: Hail to the King (PS) at a Goodwill for $3, but I couldn't find anyone to open the case so I just left it.

Last time I saw goldeneye at SAVERS they wanted 14.99 cart only. Luckilly, I had bought 2 copies at the same store 3 months prior for .99 each.

I was actually surprised they only wanted $1.99, considering that they wanted $3.99 for some of the N64 sports games. But I can never figure out the pricing at this store.

Was at goodwill today and saw....

:wii: Call of Duty World at War    $11.97

Wii console with a remote, a nunchuk, and a zapper (remote holder)  in the silent auction case >.>

Xbox Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack(disc and case only)-$2

Xbox Destroy All Humans! 2(complete)-$2

Xbox 360 The Orange Box(complete)-$2

Saw an original 360 (white phat one) console only for 24.99 at savers. just COULDNT bring myself to buy it. It was missing a HDD and I was convinced it had RROD; I had no way of testing it and didnt really wanna bother with trying to fix it if it did turn out to be rrod.

Was I in the wrong here lol? would you guys have left it or bought it if it were you?

I ran into a similar situation a couple of weeks ago, saw a 360 with no accessories at Goodwill for $25 as well, but I didn't want to even bother with it. Even moreso if you saw it at Savers, at least the ones where I live are very stingy with returns.

I just got beat to a couple of mastersystem games by a man with a woman's body (meaning he is fat in the places a chick would be fat). Apparently his GF works there and tipped him off.

I've bought a couple of 360s at savers. The first one like 2 years ago and was 24.99 and didnt work, so i returned it. The second was 14.99 and it didnt work, so i returned it. The 3rd was 4.99 and had the seal intact (doesnt work though). The most recent was .99 and im sure it doesnt work, but i figured i could part it out or sell it broken.

I got several PS1 games today for $1 each, nothing great
Lion King
Buzz Lightyear
Galaga

As for xboxes, I've bought 3 at different goodwills from $15-20 each over the past year, 2 were rrod and the third worked great and had an early version of the dashboard on it, I ended up flipping it for a decent profit since it had the old dash, the broken ones I took back for store credit

Whenever I go to Goodwill the stickers usually say something like "Sold as is with no guarantee or warranty implied". Does that mean I can return these items?

Picked up a Tiger R Zone(the silly one you put on your head) with battle arena toshiden and Indy 500 for $3.  I cant get it to work tho, the batteries in it from the 90's were all corroded...any ideas?

Try using SImple Green. It works pretty well for me when I have corroded battery terminals. Just be careful, because if those leaky batteries have been in there a long time, the terminal springs may be brittle and snap off with little effort.

Depends on the store. Most of the time you can at least get store credit.
The stores near me only give store credit, if something is marked as-is then its non returnable, I usually stay away from those unless its an nes/snes

My goodwill offers full refunds for electronics items. Anything else gets credit.

Salvation Army on the other hand has a no refund/as-is policy.

I've used baking soda and water on my car batteries, it should work for this application too
Most car batteries are acid based, so using a base to clean up corrosion makes sense.

Alkaline batteries are alkali (base) based (...), so it's better to use an acid to clean up corrosion.

Alright slow it down Mr Wizard...or would Mr. White be a newer reference? Either way, thanks for the vinegar tip. I use 91% alcohol normally.

I'm not sure of it's composition, but simple green dissolves the corrosion. I never would have thought a basic cleaner would work so well but it does.

I was actually just recording a video of it in action and my camera died halfway through...

If it works for you, go with it. :)

I only mentioned that because using an acid would neutralize any potassium hydroxide lingering and reduce the risk of a chemical burn (not that I've ever got one from cleaning alkaline corrosion, probably because the crusty stuff is actually potassium carbonate).  Think Fight Club lye scene.

Anyways, I figure might as well be safe than deal with a burn.

Saw genesis games for the first time ever at goodwill, had to pick them up.

Toe Jam and Earl CIB
Battletoads CIB
Taz-Mania CIB
Sonic 1 NFR , missing manual
Sonic 2 , missing manual

$2.99 each

Stopped by 2 Goodwills today and picked up:

2 wired Official Nintendo Gamecube controllers-$5 each

wired Mad Catz Gamecube controller-$4

Wii Balance Board-$5

xbox 360 rockband drum set-$10

Fat PS2 console with 8mb memory card-$10 (after testing I found Harvest Moon for the PS1 in the console)

PS3 Guitar Hero 3-$2 (needed it to test my guitars)

Brand New PS3 MLB 2K12-$5

My friend picked up a PS2 with everything plus COD2 inside of it for $35. I then picked up a Wired Nintendo Gamecube Controller for $1.99 or something.

Pretty good today.
