What is Extra Life?
Extra Life is a 24 hour Charity Gaming Marathon to help out kids who are in the care of the Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

Why should I join Team CheapAssGamer (CAG)?
Being apart of this wonderful community is one thing, but actually representing it in such a positive manner is worth the effort by itself. One of the perks of our versus others is that we reward our members with a end of charity raffles with all items donated by community members who really want to help out the kids.

Last year I raised just over $1,500 for my local Children's Hospital (Children's Hospital Orange County aka CHOC).

I had donor raffle prizes like games, Steam codes and so on.  This year I plan to have some cooler stuff, too. I've established contact with a few publishers/developers for some game swag and have already received some goods.  Also, thanks to the holidays and Black Friday, I picked up a thing or two for those who donate a larger amount. More details on that as the gaming marathon approaches :)

The plan is to livestream again on Saturday, October 25th (the suggested date for the Extra Life marathon as of this writing).

 
Hi all. A little over a month away from the official "Game Day"! Note that you can receive donations through the end of the year, if I recall correctly.  I started sending out "social media blasts" and will intermittently do so to friends and family through October 25th :)

Who is livestreaming? I plan to Twitch stream the full 24 hours, like I did last year.

I've updated my fundraising page with the initial list of donor raffle prizes!

Less than a month away from Game Day (October 25th), but everyone can be actively raising funds now, ahead of the official day :)  

 
Hi all, I'm sorry I won't be able to participate this year. Been kinda silent on the forums the past few months, but life has tossed a few nasty curve balls my way. I'm really disappointed, but I've been having some health issues-- I'm having my hip replaced second week of November, which will be my second surgery this year (on the same hip :) )

On a positive note, our daughter is due the week before the marathon and that has more to do with me not being able to participate this year. With our son getting older (he'll be 3 next month) and a week old daughter and not being able to sit for extended periods of time, I'm tapped out and skipping this year. I was considering doing it in two hour batches, but what I loved (besides helping others) was the marathon portion of it-- it brought me back to my youth of staying up all night to finish Ys when my brother and I got the TurboGrafx CD attachment, or skipping school to play Metal Gear Solid and being a dick to my roommate for finishing without him (I didn't ruin it, and didn't tell him I bought a separate mem card just so I could blaze through it).

So frosty, Obsidian and everyone who has played the past two years, I'm sorry I won't be able to help this year. You guys are awesome, and I'm such a competitive person that I know those funds will be missed this year. But, [queue Arnold voice]: I'll be back... And if both kids are sleeping and I am awake, I'd love to hop on for an hour or two with anyone. I tend to be on PS4 the most lately, even tho I am always logged in on Steam. Please feel free to add me on any friends lists just put ExtraLife in the title so I know.

So less than two weeks away, how is everyone fairing on fundraising? Also whats everyone playing?

I'll be playing :ps4: Destiny, :ps4: Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes, and :wiiu: Hyrule Warriors. I have a competency exam for my masters program the night before so this will be a great release from test stress.

Here are some tips that I provided to my local Extra Life guild, by the way!

Extra Lifers, some tips I remember from last year, especially for those of you who plan to livestream! 
1. Charge all of your game controllers (recharge your batteries if you have those too) before and during the event.
 
2. Run all the games you plan to play before game day (in the event they need to download patches/updates/etc). Make sure your motion controllers, Kinect, etc. are set up earlier, too.
 
3. Update early, update often, update everywhere (FB, Twitter, Instagram, E-mail, etc).
 
4. Have easy-to-eat foods for Game Day. Snacks that won't grease up your fingers, wraps or something easy to eat for meals. It's like the one day of the year I'll have an energy drink at the late hours 
 
5. Test your A/V setups if they are a bit complex. I've run into issues with my hardware/streaming setup and have backup plans/workarounds to minimize any livestream downtime.

I was planning on doing Wii Fit U, but financial troubles are preventing me from getting my hands on an Elgato or anything similar. The worst part is the bulk of my games are on the 360... It's going to be Xbox One, PC and old-school via Dazzle DVC100 for me.

Just glad your on the team. Are you streaming? So we can throw up the channel.

As time goes on, I think I'll be running MK8 and Hyrule Warriors in the morning till noon, afteroon run some MGS5, and evening run Destiny on PS4. Maybe some 3DS & PC time as well.

Game Day is near! Be sure to e-mail your friends and family about what you are doing and ask for donations. If you're livestreaming, remind folks that they can donate to your fundraising URL and so on...

 
Try as I might, I just can't drum up any more donations.  Email, Facebook, Twitter, forum threads.  Nothing, aside from the $25 donated by one of my friends. Discouraging, for sure...

I have the same problems. Even though I can't rack up much for donations, just streaming/any donations for the event makes you a winner! Sounds cheesy, but yeah aha

edit: ofcourse the time I decide to stream Twitch doesn't work.... always had no problem prior to today.

edit#2: Was something wrong with Chicago servers. I also don't think I can do a full 24 hour stream, so I'll try and milk out whatever time I can...

Sorry guys, I woke up this morning feeling like shit.  My fiance and kids have been sick all week and I managed to avoid it until this morning.  I'm still going to be gaming and live streaming, but I need to get some caffeine and meds into me.  I'll update in a few hours when I go live.

 
Ugh, I just can't win.  My fiance dragged me around all day and now ran out and left the kids with me.  I fuck ing told her I needed one day to myself for this, TWO MONTHS AGO.  And my damn microphone stopped working too.  I will (hopefully) be streaming as soon as she gets home.  Sorry, everyone.

 
My stream actually restarted randomly and you can see past broadcasts in intervals... so like an hour, 3 hours, and an 8 hour past recording. I've only got like $10 within 14 hours though since I barely get viewers in my stream. I don't use social media, so It was all just whoever drops in and was nice enough to donate.

Another year in the books. Hope everyone got some great gaming in. I ended up playing :ps3: Journey, :pSP: Disgaea, :pC: Antichamber, and :pC: Torchlight 2. Journey and Antichamber are officially off the backlog :)

Now, time to sleep!

Great job everyone, granted we did not reach anywhere close to our goal, we did raise just under $4k, so thank you everyone that put forth the effort and try to get people to donate. I'm going to through the list, in the meantime please PM me you name, address, and what systems you have for the raffle.
