20gb Playstation 3 instock a EB/Gamestop

I still can't understand why anyone, at this point, would buy a PS3. At that price, with the present lack of exclusive titles, it just seems wasteful.

Commence fanboyism.

I agree but I will get it eventually. I really only want FFXIII, SOCOM and Warhawk...mabye GT5 too.

At this point the only good thing going for it is the out of the box ability to play all PS2 games but why pay $500 when everyone already has a working PS2 in the house.. This Xmas season will be exciting for the new systems seeing everyone is going to be pulling out the big guns for sales....

I remember buying my PS2 the summer following that winter launch with
The Bouncer as my first game.. by that time there were enough titles along with my PSone stuff to keep me busy until FFX came out .. lol reason for my PS2 purchase..

Pretty much sales will pick up when better games come out and the ones already out will start to drop in price.. there is nothing to justify the $500-600 systems and $60 a pop on games at this time.. People I feel are being more cautious then they were when the 360 came out and they ran out and got it with launch titles that did not come anywhere close to the hype for $60 a pop...

This is a good deal for those who don't care for wireless or flash memory readers, but who would like to purchase a PS3 before the EE gets stripped out of it.

True. Remember the 5 free Blu-ray movie rebate begins 7/1. The 20GB will not be eligible for that.

It's honestly worth it just for the Blu-Ray player, especially since they are coming to our local Blockbusters now. It's just a bonus for me to have Motorstorm and Resistance in addition to 1080p movies....

people mainly buy a gaming system for the games, not to watch movies, the lack of titles right now PS3 probably won't catch up until 2008 or so.

2008 will be awesome, but the Fall/Winter line up is great too!

not to mention the 2.0 update-- it'll be a different system then it is now, interface wise, after the Home update.

Not worth it, considering the tax you have to pay for an expensive item. It's better to go for amazon route and get 60 gig tax free.

Catch up with what? I don't see it ever catching up with 360 or Wii, if that's what you mean. Still will have its share of great games though.

im more and more starting to agree with this...especially since i was reading yesterday how developers are jumping the Sony ship to do Nintendo stuff

Do you have confirmation that the 20GB is ineligible?

Good call. I didn't even think about that.
Enough fanboy crap, on any of the sides.
Um, where's the fanboy crap you're referring to?

IF you interested in the PS3 and don't need the wifi or memory slots, I would get a 20GB. You can easily upgrade it with normal HD's which you can find cheap, and they aren't special ones needed for other systems.

Mostly the internal HD would be for games and such you download. Though you can upload your music and vidoes to the HD, if you run out of space you can use a USB HD or orther USB storage device also to help expand it if you want.

Thanks for the confirmation - hmm...for the time being, if you're really into the free movies offered, a tax-free 60GB at Amazon is a substantially better deal.

Free shipping too. So you're basically paying close to the same price.
Um, where's the fanboy crap you're referring to?

It was probably deleted.
Correct. We don't need any more fanboy posts in deal threads.

So have they "fixed" the 1080i only HD downscaling problem yet? I'm looking at getting a PS3 one of these days but not until I know it will display properly on my set.

It isn't the PS3 that was doing this, it was the games. And mostly the launch games. It was more of an upscaling problem, if your taking about the 720P games not upscaling to 1080i. Depends on what you want to play but most of the current games address this, along with the newer FW to upscale DVD's/PS2/PS1 and so on.

Here is the system update thread where you can find more info on all the FW updates.

Just a tip.

I would actually hold out until July 1st, there is a magazine scan rebate around the internet that gives NEW bluray owners a chance receive a FREE lot of 5 Bluray movies. $500 for a Blu-ray + game system is a bargain with in the addition of free movies.

An okay deal if (and only if), you don't care about the memory space, cards readers, or wi-fi. Otherwise, just pony up a little more cash and get a 60GB at amazon (get it after 7/1 and get 5 BR movies free after rebate, well worth the extra cash you would sink in it).

Or even better, just hold out altogether and wait for a price drop, at which point there will be more games out and lower prices on the older titles. E3 is almost hear and I smell pricecuts on PS3 models, especially the 50GB, along with a probable announcement of a GH lineup (what better way to get people's attention away from the cost of the system, then by having cheap games on said system).

Shhhhhhhhhh don't say that too loud, Fatbeer, before the Attorney Generals of NY n I think NJ try to sue Amazon for not charging their states sales tax on items, like they did to all the online cigarette outlets.

A bunch of my friends were ordering from those sites and got HAMMERED for ALOT of prior orders for their 'unpaid taxes'. So much for free enterprise and the glory of the almost completely tax free internet, huh?

Oh and ummm I thought this site was called CHEAP ass gamer, to me $499.99 isn't CHEAP. Now, if they WERE actually CLEARING these out, like Sears is doing with the Core 360's, I might half consider it.

Oh and definitely for me, the 20 gb would be the way to go, since I really DON'T care for all the extraneous crap they have in the 60 gig(memory card ports for devices I DON'T have, wifi).

Yeah, just wait til July 1st, go to a Sony Styles Stores and get a 60gig.

They are giving away 2 free games ($59 each) and a $50 Gift Card at Sony Styles Stores June 17 - July 8th with the purchase of a 60gig. Plus use the coupon for 5 free movies.

$600 + Tax = Around $660
$660 - [(2x$59 games ) + ($50 Gift Card) + (5x$20 blu ray movies)] =

$390 !!!!
Then again, I can't find myself wanting any ps3 games right now ...

yes

The official US Playstation site just released the changelog for PS3 FW 1.82 and we've posted it below for all of you guys. Note that some of the following general changes and major additions in FW 1.82 have already been incorporated in previous firmware updates:

Way to go for crushing my PS3 dreams. Thanks for clarifying.

EE? As in Emotion Engine? Do you think Sony will stip backwards compatibility in the U.S.?
EE? As in Emotion Engine? Do you think Sony will stip backwards compatibility in the U.S.?
Go check on the Internet, as well as in the PS3 forum about this.

Later models of the 60GB no longer have the EE chip included, so it turns emulation into a SW-only affair. All 20GB's and earlier 60GB's have the EE included, so it's a SW & HW solution.

Wait that is the European and Australian models only correct? The US 60GB still have the EE I believe. Gonna have to do some research now...

Is it possible to use Gamestop/EBGames store credit on the online site?

Is it possible to return to a store if I have problems with it?

Some clarifications-the rebate form on EBGames' site doesn't specify a Playstation 3 model, it just says "PS3", and it's also listed directly under the $500 model, so it appears to qualify for the free movies. Of course the free movies are pretty terrible, but still...

AFAIK the EE has NOT been removed from any U.S. models yet. Also backwards compatibility even without it appears to be much, much better than the X-Box 360's (even though it's only been on the market half a year). I'm guessing the upscaling they do in newer firmware actually bypasses the Emotion Engine, or at least Graphics Synthesizer, though I don't know for sure.

EDIT: Also, tax is still going to be a lot cheaper than the extra $100 you spend on basically nothing on the $600 model. Wifi would be better to do with an Ethernet/Wifi bridge, if you want it. Memory card readers you can just plug in your USB one, if you need it for something.
I dont think so
Thanks. Darn! I'd probably do it for sure if I could, I've got hundreds on there.

As a quick aside, note that the 5 free Blu Ray movie rebate form on Ebgames DOES NOT limit the 5 free movies to the 60 GB model. In fact, it's linked right on the 20GB model page.

Here's a link to their rebate form for the 5 free movies:

http://www.gamestop.com/gs/files/sb_onlineform.pdf

So it looks like at least if you go through Ebgames and get the 20gb drive, you would still qualify for the 5 free Blu Ray movies. Just a thought...

So anyone know if a store return is possible with this? I'd ask about a store swap, except of course they won't have any.

I wonder if this is actually new stock, and Sony's offering it to EBGames since they know it'll sell, as sort of a way to lower the price $100 for hardcore gamers? It's been in and out of stock several times now over the last month or so...
Thanks. Darn! I'd probably do it for sure if I could, I've got hundreds on there.
Just buy a giftcard that's usable online. I've done it plenty of times. Just confirm that it's the type you can use online.

A mom and pop store told me that Sony going to drop their system to $500 somewhere in July and they got the news from whole seller

Good to know :D. Anyway no interesting exclusive game until at least September so I can keep on waiting.

E3's in a week. I see it happening then.

I'd pick one up if they announced a drop. In fact, if EB were still running their $100 credit for a PS2 I would DEFINATELY be on it.
