.

YMMV for sure, but I do think they will offer things like that to kepe you on board. My membership expires this month in a few days, but I wonder how I go about trying to get them to offer me things when I don't have auto-renew on?

Do I just say "my membership is expiring soon, is there anything you can offer me to stay on board"?

You can say that, but here's how my conversation went:

"Hi, I'd like to cancel my Xbox Live account please"
"Ok, is there a reason why?"
"I don't own an xbox 360 anymore"

Even though I told the rep I don't own an Xbox he still gave me the offer of 800 MS points, my thought is that this is standard customer retention practice in order to keep customers from canceling. It even sounded like the guy was reading when he went through his whole spiel about offering me 800 points to renew.

Hm, I may have to do that. I don't know if I will renew or not (for real), and some MS points may help. I wonder...could you get the MS points transferred onto your account, but not renew? I only ask because I probably won't be able to renew until sometime after it expires.

Also, I cannot help but wonder if you could milk more then 800 MS points?

"I don't know, 800 points sounds a bit low to renew my whole membership...I think I would if you were able to offer 1600"

Well, probably. If you get the points, then call like a day later and cancel, I don't think there's anything they can do about it. I think that would work.

Also, I can't speak about M$ personally, but when I try to haggle with the Fido customer retention, they usually get the manager on the phone and sometimes I'm able to negotiate something slightly better in order to renew my phone plan...

So who knows, maybe they'll get the manager on if you're persistent enough.

If you do try this and have success, let me know, I'm very curious.

Managers usually like to get rid of people as fast as possible, so I do think I may be able to haggle. I need to check when it expires, but I will probably call a day or two before it is gone and try to get some points.

Then, just let it expire naturally. If they transfer the points onto my account in exchange for renewal, I very much doubt they will yank the points away even if I let the membership die, which I will.

Thanks for the update, and if I call them I will let you know what goes on.

When I canceled my membership (sometime in 2008) They offered me 500 ms points if I wanted to stay.

It's actually a pretty good way to get 500-800+ free points if you plan on renewing anyways.

Do they charge you for the renewal (if you agree to it because of free Microsoft Points), or do they just leave it on auto renew?

I cancelled my auto-renew back in September and the conversation with the rep went almost exactly as it did yours. Even though I told the rep I didn't own an xbox 360 anymore she still tried to get me to keep my xbox live, without any incentives though like the 800 ms points offered to you...
