Original Story: http://kotaku.com/344490/rumor-2k9-college-hoops-canned-ea-seeks-ncaa-deal

Responding to rumors we broke earlier today that College Hoops 2K9 has been canceled due to a breakdown in negotiations with the license holders for collegiate basketball, 2K Sports parent company Take-Two had this to say to Kotaku:

2K Sports has decided not to continue negotiations with the CLC for the license for its top-rated College Hoops franchise, which would have been released next in November 2008. We are committed to providing fans with high-quality, critically-acclaimed sports games, but given our disciplined approach to the business, we do not believe the current discussions would result in an acceptable outcome.

I followed up with Take-Two to try and get more details and while the declined to talk about any roll EA might have had in the break-down, they did confirm that College Hoops 2K9 has indeed been canceled.

No word still from The Collegiate Licensing Company or Electronic Arts, but we'll keep you posted.
Interesting development so far.

Wow, that sucks. I always thought the CH2K series was much, much better than March Madness, especially for the last couple of years.

Words in.....EA came to a deal and now has exclusive rights to the RPG Genre

FFXIII...Canceled
Mass Effect 2.....Xbox360,PS3,DS,PSP,PS2,PSX,N64,Dreamcast,Wii,Xbox,GBA

I Quite gaming if they mess with my RPG Genre, thats one place EA has no Buisness in :)

i never buy a college basketball game anyways but the 2k ones were always decent/better than ea

maybe their saving up money to fight for nfl rights..

please god!

2K College games were always pretty good and always better than March Madness. Looks like 2k8 will be the last college basketball game I buy for awhile.
Eh. Only sports games I play are Madden and sometimes those street games.
Same.

eh????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I still have another 2 more years on my ban of EA Sports games.

The 2k Series has always been great since the Dreamcast days.
Dang. That sucks if it pans out that way.
I don't think sucks is quite the right word for this. This goes for all genres and pretty much everything in life. Having competition is always good. This is a bit of a disturbing trend that is going on in the sports genre.

March Madness sucks. I've bought every single College Hoops game the day it came out since 2003.

I'm going to start a petition. This is horrible...really horrible. I've spent more time playing College Hoops games than all other games combined. Hell, the reason I picked the 360 over the Wii was because the Wii didn't have Hoops.

Why does everyone blame EA. Blame the NFL, NCAA for opening up exclusive license agreements. EA is just a smart business company. Do NOT blame them for grabing the license...if not, 2K would have them or someone else (shudder). 2K took the best baseball series away (luckily 1st party can still create them).

BLAME THE SPORTS/ORGANIZATIONS, NOT EA.

I have to agree. I played a few of the College Hoops 2k games and felt they were pretty good (since I am into College Basketball). March Madness games are terrible IMO and seeing them as our only choice is quite sad (especially for PS3 owners since I heard EA busted the framerate in the PS3 version, but I don't want to get into a discussion about it).

I'm probably going to pick up College Basketball 2k8 and that will be my last NCAA basketball game.

It's just as much EA's fault. They asked the NBA to go exclusive, the NBA wouldn't. They got an exclusive with the NHLPA, and the NHL told them "no license from us unless you drop the NHLPA exclusive".

Now, the Madden thing, that WAS the NFL saying "we want one game only, show us the money." EA decided it was better to spend money on Madden than MVP Baseball, so they had little to no interest in ANY kind of multiconsole deal to keep the series going.

What I hate EA for the most is their ESPN deal. They've had the ESPN license for several years now and not one of their sports games has presentation as good as NFL 2k5 did.

Why blame EA? Have you seen NBA Live and March Madness? It's not the license. It's the quality of the game. I would be 100% happy if there was 1 NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA game but they were all quality. Unfortunately that isn't the case, and more so with EA.
Anyone else hate EA? I NEED a College Hoops 2K9. I play the Hoops games so much it's not even funny...
Talk to 2K and CLC about there not being a CH 2K9, not EA.

Yep, I remember a article in EGM or Game Informer(don't remember which one it was) on this. Apparently NCAA has been playing EA & 2K against each other for the exclusive license up until 2K gave up because NCAA wasn't getting back to them.

It's been rumored since January that the series is canned and EA will be getting the license since 2K is tired of the NCAA not giving them a chance to give a counter-offer.

Well it definitely sucks balls forever one when there's less competition on the market.

All these companies had the same opportunities EA did...

Everyone had a sports brand game...

Nintendo NCAA Basketball (SNES) they let it go...

Sony Gameday Football (ps) let it go

Sony - Gamebreaker (collegefootbal (PS) let the franchise go

Microsoft - Game Fever [can't remember the name of their football game] - no longer exists.

Tecmo - EGM rumors say they're finally working on one after all these years.

Acclaim - Quarterback's Club - gone

-------------------------my point is that EA stuck with these sports franchises when few bothered to do so. The industry basically gave the sports games market to EA a long time ago.
