360 Elites are in stock at amazon (as of 7/19)

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I guess the point that I (and everyone else who like great deals) is trying to make is that if you're going to post opinions on systems you don't even own yet, then you're posting on the wrong thread.

Being an educated consumer is doing their homework, having realistic expectations of what the pros and cons are of each console when they make their purchases. They will vote with their wallets. I'd like to think that most CAG members are fairly educated with their purchases. Would we want to read about "opinions" on which console is "better"? In this forum? In this thread? They've probably read/heard most of it, if not all, already. They know what they want, and they go to forums like this one (and I'm well aware that CAG does have dedicated forums for each platform's fans/faithfuls) to find out the best deals on what they want, unless I'm gravely mistaken.

IMHO, being an educated consumer for a game console is making their purchase decision based on what games they want to play, how well the console runs the games, etc. And not because of, for all intents and purposes, theoretical peak performances, tech specs and what not.

I don't understand how letting others know of your opinion when you haven't even made a purchase decision yet is being an educated consumer. I can tell you right now that I think that the Canon Powershot S5 IS is better than Sony's DSC-H9. I don't have either one. But I do have a Powershot A80. And I've read reviews from Megapixel.Net, CNET, Steve's Digicams, dpreview.com, etc. Does this make me an educated consumer? I guess it does. Do I really need to let people know that the S5 IS is a better deal? I don't see what benefits it will do. Maybe it may irk some Sony faithfuls, but what good does that do? Or perhaps I'm just not that philanthropic, trying to prevent people from making a wrong decision. The question is, would buying a DSC-H9 be a wrong decision? I'm sure people will disagree.

All I have to say is, do your homework, buy what you want based on what you find out, and be happy with what you get. No need to tell others what you think is better when you haven't even had tried either one. IMHO, all you succeed in doing is getting responses like this.

Again, apologies for going off track. I think I'm gonna have to stop. I mean, the Elite is already OOS at Amazon anyway. I can't believe I've spent this much time on this topic already. I wouldn't really want to spend more time on this. Gaming beckons!!!

Well, actually, sleeping beckons at this moment. It's getting too late (or early morning, for that matter) !!!

Off to bed I go...
Goddamn, this is a thread about a deal for the 360 Elite, not a place to complain about people not looking for a PS3. Go to GameFAQs or NeoGAF for that.
QFT

STFU w/ what games you want etc...

not to mention that "elites in stock" is in no way a deal

Looks like Amazon has resumed taking orders for the Elite. Expected ship date looks to be the 25th of this month.

I have an Elite and I love it and definitely think the extra $80 was worth it, even though at this time I'm not even using the HDMI (though I will probably get an HDMI-capable receiver soon). The extra HD space has allowed me to download all kinds of crap and not have to worry about constantly deleting/redownloading stuff. That alone is worth at least some part of the difference.

However, last night I had one of those dreams that seemed so real it took me a while when I woke up to realize it was just a dream. I was playing my Elite and a bunch of black smoke poured out of the top. For whatever reason it kept working and I was able to get my game out (what game I'm not sure but I think it may have been NCAA '08 which I don't even have) and shut it off. Again, this was only a dream - but I hope not a omen of an impending disaster . Anyway, if mine ever goes it will be cool if it goes like that instead of just some boring ol' RRoD.

So now that we find out theirs no price cut for the 360 (ofcourse no point til at least nov.) and the PS3 cut is at best a smoke screen and firesale (to take out the emotion chip in the US, by giving people a 20gb uptick) where are the fanboys now..... ;)
It's not 360 vs ps3... it's more so about whether or not this is a good deal, compared to what you can get for 20$ more (actually about 60-80$ less if you sell the free blurays).
Except for $20 more you get a PS3, which is not an Xbox 360 therefore irrelevant here, right?

EDIT sorry I should have read the whole thread before adding another useless post......!

How's the noise on yours? I've heard (unfortunately) that getting an elite doesn't mean you'll be getting a quieter model...though hopefully they've all been fixed(?)

The Elite was actually the only model 360 I saw in stores when I was looking at games a couple of days ago. Best Buy had a bunch, and not a single of the original two (nor did anywhere else I saw). I wonder if that means a redesign is coming soon? A price drop? Maybe they recalled them? Hope if there is a redesign it both fixes the reliability AND makes it quieter :(

My Elite (bought on 4/29)'s DVD drive basically died. Every other game it would not play (and have this very loud/nasty scratching noise, but thankfully, discs are not damaged). I am returning it for another since it is still within 90 days at Target. But I am very disappointed since my original Xbox is still going strong and I used it just as often.

This is a pretty decent deal, but I just can't get myself to buy it from anywhere other than Costco. (b/c of reliability issues and Costco's super long return policy) :(

 Glad to hear they fixed the reliability problems ;)

IMO Microsoft is responsible for damaged discs (if any had been damaged). I hope that lawsuit is successful. I mean I have NEVER had any optical drive wreck a disc, even if it dies. It should NOT be possible. On a $400-480 console, I think they can afford a decent drive. Especially when a high quality drive is what, $20-30 RETAIL?!? And that's probably with some burning capabilities at that price.

I think disc damage is due to folks moving their XBox when it's spinning, on purpose or accidentally. Cannot sue for own negligence.

I've seen 360's completely destroy discs that have never been moved. Microsoft has even admitted to a defect in the drive.

Even if the drive IS moved, it shouldn't really be able to cause that kind of damage, not that I'd ever intentionally move a drive around much while in motion. But at any rate, I doubt most people are moving their systems around when they're on-and if they were, so would PS2 and PS3 owners (and PSP obviously), and you don't get the same kinds of reports with those.

This is not a good deal, if I had a choice I would buy the PS3 for a little more money. (XBox Premium out for repair, bought PS3 via Amazon, going to receive my PS3 soon, still no word from Repair Center)

I'm not a sony fanboy because this will be the first PS that I own, own both XBox and both I had to send in for repair.
All sides just drop it. The deal is dead, discuss the PS3 vs Elite elsewhere.
Not that I want to bump this thread up in particular ;) but I thought I'd answer this.

I've never been around a regular 360 so I can't compare. I can say that it isn't very noisy when you are playing off the HD (say, an XBLA game) or even an original Xbox game. But put a 360 game in there and the engines rev up - it is entirely the disc that is making all the noise. But I take it from other people that it is often the 360 itself and its fans that are noisy. For example, Cheapy thought the Halo edition 360 was quiet at a demo at E3. Since said demo (Halo 3 I think) was most likely running off the HD (and not disc-based) I wouldn't have expected it to be noisy - but perhaps Cheapy's original model 360 (and thus, most others as well) is noisy when running off the HD. My Elite has only slightly noiser fans than my laptop computer, for what it's worth. And since I'm never that close to it I barely hear it. But, like I said, put a disc in there and you can hear it from upstairs.

So, my answer, is... perhaps?? But they really need to fix the drive noise. It is unbearable at times (it is always the same, it is just more unbearable when I have to play with the sound down or during a quiet, atmospheric game).

That sounds like the fan noise *might* be quieter than the three I've had, but the main problem has always been that disc drive. It's outrageously loud, and for me would wreck certain kinds of games. I wonder how I can even enjoy something like Blue Dragon on that system.

Mine are also pretty loud in terms of the fans. I'd say it's roughly like my desktop PC. Much louder than the Playstation 2, 3, etc., but not unreasonable. (Mine have all sounded the same regardless of whether they're running a demo off the hard drive, playing a movie, etc.)

It's not until you run a 360 game that it gets nuts. I'm with a lot of other people who would pick a Playstation 3 version of a game just to avoid the noise.
