360 price drop "imminent"?

Did they really say Elite is a limited run?
Anyway, all that would work better around November, after Falcon has rolled out (maybe?) and the Elite has had a 6 month run.
The whole point of a price drop(if they do one) is to stop people from getting a PS3. Microsoft is in a good position and they can't afford to start to lose their lead over Sony now.

I love the console wars(especially since I am not an late-adopter)!
Did they really say Elite is a limited run?
I wasn't thinking literally limited edition, just limited time. My understanding of the Elite is that it was a stopgap to rake in the cash until MS put HDMI in the other systems. Or maybe it's all lies. Whatever... I said the post was out-there.

Edit:

Rumblings of limited edition

Recant

A pricedrop seems like a bit of a waste, people are going to buy 360s this holiday season because of the games comming out, now an extra $100 off the system price would help sell more units but $50 won't make much of an impact.

Still if true Elite owners are getting royally fucked.

Agreed (if there's more than a $30 drop)
Hope that's not your 360 standing vertical. Lay it down.
It is, indeed. It is just too cool that way though . Plus it seems like it will get way better ventilation this way (it gets hot on both sides). The horizontal thing is for the motherboard warping (and GPU popping out) issue, right? Well, I'll take my chances. I have completely unfounded faith that the extra epoxy in the Elite will keep it together ;).

I always had mine vertical, until I had problems with the disk drive not opening and closing. But once I laid it down everything was all better.

Is the drive noise any quieter with it laying down? I may give it a shot for that reason alone.

I've never had a problem with my drive making noise. It's just when I press the close/eject button it doesn't close or open. I have to just manually push it in now. One time I had to manually pull it out too.

I have to do this little trick where when I press the open button I have to press on the disk drive and for some reason or another it makes it open up.

I thought they all made (an abnormal amount of) noise when the disc spins up (which is constant during play of a disc-based game). If not, then it is a special feature on the Elite I guess .

$249 for a core isn't worth it IMO, but I can't expect Microsoft to drop the price further due to the shellacking they are taking with the new 3 year warranty and the repair costs. Then again, had they engineered the 360 THE RIGHT WAY none of this would be an issue. Oh well. Back to my gaming...

im getting a core.. gonna ebay a 20gb hdd.:)

I have a premium now (3rd one, thanks to repairs... but I'm not bitter about it, believe it or not... I had 3 PS2's also), but if the Elite drops to $400, I may have to upgrade and put my premium down in the basement by the pool table. Is the Elite really quieter than the premium? I also have the HD-DVD drive, which is white... so it might look a little odd sitting next to a black system. I can't decide. Opinions / Suggestions?

I haven't read this whole thread so forgive me if this has been pointed out, but all three of those articles are just quoting Michael Pachter. So it's really still one source saying it's going to happen.

You want to know why nintendo stuff doesn't break? They control their own plants that make their own hardware. This may raise costs and reduce volume but the quality is much higher. Should microsoft have overengineered it to compensate for the riggers of outsourced manufacturing, maybe.
No.
IF by no you mean yes.

In almost products a small percentage are going to have a defects, which the company usually replaces for free. Which is different than say having a high percentage of dres (estimated at up to 24%) and refusing to fix them until they are sued, or having so many failures (estimated at up to 33%) that there is a back up at the repair plants, they run out of shipping boxes and they have to extend the warranty. The psp(at launch) and the zune also have more than there fair share of problems.

I would trust in the quality of a Nintendo luanch product over the best model of any of its competitors.
The only product I can think of by Nintendo with a high failure was there original wiimote wrist strap.
Is the drive noise any quieter with it laying down? I may give it a shot for that reason alone.
Maybe it's because I've had a Sega Dreamcast since 1999 but I've never thought the 360 was that loud. Hell, my fat PS2 makes an annoying clicking sound during some games, that's way worse than the steady drone my 360 produces.

My October of 2001 Gamecube approves of this statement as it flawless runs everything I throw at it.

the launch and early gamecubes had a problem with dying lasers.
they should just get rid of the core. There is no need for that anymore
probably too many out there. i think they probably stopped making them because i dont see ANY cores anywhere including at my BB, CC and Target.

Maybe it's just mine then because that steady drone is WAY louder than any noise any of my other systems make. From where I sit I can only occasionally hear disc-access on the Wii and can't hear any noise from my PS2 or Gamecube. I've never had a Dreamcast - if it's worse than the 360 that is horrible, I would have hated it ;).

looks like no price drop, with the press conference now over and no drop announced. shame, was considering a 360 until finding that out

My December of 03 GC says "hello" from beyond the grave. RIP.
Nintendo's willingness to replace things (defective Wiis, Wii Sports that have been scratched up by the case, stuck Zeldas, and thin remote straps) is certainly commendable, but that is beside the point. It is defects in the first place that I was referring to, and the Wii had them. I have no numbers whatsoever, but based on these boards at least, a fairly significant chunk of launch-day buyers had malfunctioning Wiis. Just do a search of the Wii board for the word "artifacting".
My point is that the number of defects is probably low I don't have any numbers eithere but I would be suprised if it was over 3%. Also wasn't it problem with ATI's cards not the parts manufactured by nintendo?

Back on topic I still think the 360 will have a price drop, even if they didn't say so at E3 (E3 dosn't seem to be as big this year imo) I don't think they would pass on a chance to run sony out of the market for a couple of hundrend million dollars with all the billions they have spent to get there current market share.

so we are not getting a price drop?

I take a ps3 for 500 before buying a xbox 360 for 480

fingers crossed nintendo drops its price or something big

LOL I like this news

Microsoft sued over scratched Xbox 360 discs
10 July 2007 21:21 by DVDBack23

Yesterday, an unhappy Xbox 360 user filed a class action lawsuit against Microsoft over damage done to his discs by the console. What does the gamer want out of the lawsuit? All his games replaced or "equal monetary compensation" for them.

The gamer claims that the laser in the Xbox 360 caused permanent damage to his retail bought games and that the attached documentation that comes with the system does not mention anything or advise against moving the console while it is turned on.

The lawsuit also states that damage can occur while the console is stationery.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of Microsoft's $1 billion USD move to give customers warranty extensions and free repairs if there system experiences general hardware failure.

I can just picture the dude picking up his xbox360 and shaking the hell out of it thinking its a wii LOL

Didn't Microsoft start replacing scratched discs a long time ago? Anyway Microsoft isn't dropping the price 2 months before Halo 3, when all of their systems are still cheaper than the cheapest PS3 offering.
