360 S Arcade, 2 Wireless Controllers, 1 Yr XBL, 4k MS Points - $250 @ MS Store

You all realize that the "old" 360 hard drives are really just SATA laptop hard drives you can buy at any PC store that sells them, they just have that stupid Xbox shroud?

I'm sure there's a way to detect if the hard drive isn't the stock one that came with the particular corresponding model. Especially since the only 2 drive sizes/models that would work are the 250 gig and the 4 gig and neither of those drives are available to purchase separately yet.

So I think it's totally possible to figure out if someone has swapped their hard disk but I don't know if MS would know and if they would be willing to bet a ban on it.

I haven't seen a new 360 model or hard drive in person nor had one in my hands so I can only speculate on the hard ware but if the old SATA hard drives from the old 360s work then that would go to imply that the "new" hard drives are the same SATA laptop hard drives in a different/harder to open shroud.

So I just received my bundle and the Microsoft points said it has to be activated by retailer? Did anyone run into this problem, if so how did you resolve it?

Same problem here. I'll call them later today.

For what it's worth I've had the 4gb since they were released and the first thing I did when I got mine was take the shell off my old Elite's 120gb hard drive and stick it into my 4gb. It plays Halo Reach just fine. I haven't been banned. The drives are plug and play and there is no update or flash required for installing it. I really doubt they check to see if your hard drive is in the console it was bought with, if they banned people for using hard drives that didn't come specifically with their system then why would they give the option to purchase stand alone certified drives in store? The drives, whether purchased separately or taken out of a shell from another system, are still certified Microsoft drives.

If people are still paranoid about something happening then why not just ask Xbox Support? They will probably say something like "yeah, it's possible but not recommended because the shell on the new drives is like it is to hold the drive secure in the console and we can't be held accountable if something messes up because you have your drive just hanging in there without a shell".

Called microsoft and they said they will send out an email to me next week confirming a new card being sent with 2-day shipping. Just call (877) 696-7786 and hit "0" a couple of times and you should get someone. Don't bother listening to the menu options and make sure you have your order number ready.

Instead of sending me a new card, they want me to fax my card front and back. I don't know how they can activate it it like that, but we'll see

When I called they said that they are aware that they shipped out a bad batch and that there should be an email coming later in the week with instructions regarding the problem.
