360's disc drive stopped working, MS says outside of warranty

Paying for the repairs seems like a terrible idea -- you'll get a refurb unit which will probably croak on you someday as well. Either report it as a RROD, get your replacement and hope for the best, or buy a brand new unit (the new 360s are supposed to be much more reliable) and sell the old one for whatever you can get for it. It's worth the extra $ to get a new, more reliable unit and a decent warranty.

I am thinking whenever mine finally dies to just get a new one, especially since I have more choice as to what I get, my current one doesn't even have HDMI.
I tried the towel trick but only got 2 rings of death, and it started back up. I feel like I'm playing the slots

:D
When my dvd drive died I was out of warranty, so just put a new one in myself (I also put it in a new case with green LEDs).
Will MS ban you for modding a 360?
yes.
But obviously he isn't banned...so maybe if you mod it but dont flash the firmware and buy legit games then they won't ban you...

Modding the case is different than modding the software. They won't ban you for putting a custom case or something onto it. They may give you a hard time about having a different DVD drive, but I doubt it.

Yeah I don't have any intentions to mod the software or pirate games. I just want to put in a new disk drive, new case, tons of LEDs and fans in there. Could they pick up a signal from my 360 on extra hardware in there?

They obviously can't tell that you added LEDs or fans, but opening up the system voids the warranty and you wouldn't be able to get it fixed.

If that's okay with you, cosmetically mod away.

In order to replace the DVD drive, it has to have a specific firmware on the dvd drive.

So you have to find the exact dvd drive make and model used in 360's in the past, then you have to flash it's firmware to 360 firmware, and then it will work. But you also just made your system able to pirate games in the process, thereby making yourself open to any and all defensive action Microsoft tries in the future to brick your box or lock you out of live.

Sorry, but that's just wrong. One most modding sites, they have a link to a page of original firmwares. This for people who just want to replace a DVD drive. You download the firmware, inject your serial number, then flash it. MS will never know. (Unless you don't use the hairdryer trick and you screw up the warranty sticker.)

Hey guys,

I can fix your DVD problems if you decide you want to get it fixed. I have fixed several broken Xbox 360s and a DVD drive is a reasonable thing to fix. I would charge $100. That includes return shipping, although the majority of that cost would be on the replacement drive.
Just shoot me a PM if you have questions or anything.
I really do a lot of work on Xbox 360s and my next project will be to have this:

replacing a DVD drive doesn't require you to mess with firmwares unless you swap out a different type of drive with the original. Normally you just take the chipset board of a DVD drive and take it out of the broken drive and insert it into the new DVD drive. You have to do this because each DVD drive writes a unique code to the 360 and if you were to just replace the DVD drive without swapping the boards the 360 would only be able to play DVDs and not games. I've done this quite a few times so let me know if you have any questions.
