ALL OF the Xbox 360s in Wal-Mart shops around the US have been switched off due to wireless interference.

Microsoft has admitted that the console is interfering with Wal-Mart's hand held scanners but has also said that the problem is minor and that a software fix is in the works. Wal-Mart's headquarters in Arkansas has instructed all branches to shut down the console until a fix is available.

Microsoft's statement says that their kiosk program has "encountered some minor wireless interference issues that are specific to some retail environments". The Xbox's 2.4 GHz wireless is much like that used in cordless phones and wireless routers. Since the implementation of these signals some retailers have had problems with network based stock systems suffering interference.

Microsoft said it had identified the problem and within 24 hours had deployed a fix to Wal-Mart kiosks. More information here. It is still unclear whether or not the 360 will cause interference with other wireless devices possibly already in use. When questioned a Microsoft spokesman s confident that this would not be the case, stating that: "The issue is specific to the equipment used in a few retail environment". It continued: "Xbox 360, like portable phones, wireless network routers, and Bluetooth devices, emits radio frequency in the 2.4GHz band. It is possible that devices that do not comply with FCC/ETSI rules of operation in this band may not properly handle interference from other 2.4GHz sources. Such devices would be extremely rare in a home environment."

lol. We're really grabbing for Xbox 360 info when this makes news...

It's a pretty big deal. I noticed they were shut off at mine today as well. They should be up and running again by the weekend.. I hope. Shame, I was looking forward to playing it today during my break between classes. Oh well. The lady there didn't know what was wrong, she opened up the case and I got to touch it. Yay. Then she ran and asked someone what was wrong.. I figured it was the wireless network thing.

i played the one in greenfield, WI the other day. Impresed by call of duty and kameo, King Kong was kinda crappy. Button mashing is all I could come up with for that game.. the controller rocks though.

Really? I thought King Kong looked great.. I didn't get to play it though, so I can't comment on the gameplay, but the environment graphics and the textures on the dinosaur were amazing. Kameo.. looked nice, looked boring as hell..

yeah they definetly could have picked some more action filled segments instead of tutorials for kameo, but I played the king kong demo where you are king kong and all i kept doing was pushing A, no other button seemed to do anything. It felt just like an Xbox game to me. Kameo impressed me with its potential, it was a bad choice of gameplay for a demo, though.

Yeah, I'd played the Call of Duty demo before on my computer but it's not the greatest computer so it was real fun to play it on the 360. Very very crisp and nice. What it'll look like on my non-hd tv? no idea.
I wasn't too impressed by King Kong or Kameo though. I usually like platformers in the vein of Kameo quite alot so I'm going to have to give it another shot.

the funny thing is the kiosks use the wired controllers. There should be no interference with home devices though since the xbox 360 has passed all the consumer tests. I guess Walmart just use really propreitary stuff for thier PA system

Nope. If you look at the controller it's the wireless one. I know it's connected, but that's just to keep people from running away. The little connecter thing shows a wireless symbol. In theory there should be no wires hiding in the platic/rubber connector thingy.

Well I got the info from Joystiq who has some insider o_O

Seems legit to me though.

also from a kiosk perspective it makes more sense that they would use the wired controllers, otherwise they'd have to recharge/replace the controller's battery after the juice ran out which would be one more hassle to deal with. Also there is no benifit in using the wireless since it's tethered on the kiosk anyway.

its probably a wireless with a play and charge kit connected. Just so they can advertise the wireless ability. Makes sense.

Played a little today in Michigan, so they're not all off. The Lansing store was, but Jackson was up and running. Played a short bit of Kameo and CoD2. Both look great, run smooth. Kameo not too exciting for the segment available, but CoD was pretty sweet. I've been super stoked for this system, and I even have to admit I was a little dissappointed. There was definately some sweetness there, but didn't really feel much different than playing Xbox... I have the feeling it'll sink in a little more playing at home where I can get a little more immersed in a game.

I would like to walk into my Walmart wearing my xbox hat and shirt and tell them I am here to repair their xbox 360 and I need to get it out of the case. I would then remove the xbox from the case to bring it "out to my truck to make the repair". :) I would bet noone would even think twice ;)

From the Xbox 360 party packs that haven't been mailed out yet. ;) Or Ebay, they gave a ton of them away at system launch and more to retailers and etc since then.

The Microsoft retail site. My friend got me a Halo 2 shirt from that site.

My Walmart has it shut off. I went up there to try to play it and they didn't have it on unfortunatly. I got to hold the controller at least, which seemed nice.

Posted this in the other thread because I'd told the locals that the system was up and running at my walmart. Today, not so much.............

cut and paste from other thread:

DAMN, just went to my Walmart yesterday (Florence KY) and played COD2 for a couple minutes but had to leave. I went back today and they had it turned off! I went to the cashier and asked her if she would turn it on so I could play it and she said no it's broken and she wasn't not allowed to turn it on. I asked if she would open the case and let me look at a game and let ME turn it on while she wasn't looking. LOL she just stared at me blankly..... I saw someone else scanning prices in the department so I tried again and they said that they'd noticed that the system was getting hot and one of the games around the it was warm to the touch so they shut it off and called someone to come take a look at it but untill then it'd be off for a couple days. WTF is going on with all these Walmarts, that's the only reason I went there............ If you let a system run 24/7 in a cramped display case with no air flow they are going to get a little warm. To top it off EB next door wasn't open yet.... Wasted trip and no 360 love for me. :(
