Looks like Nintendo is going to use this program to drive 3DS sales.

Missed the deadline for free NES and GBA games? Nintendo adds handy mail in option.

Gizmodo Australia reports you’ll be able to register until September 30, although it’s no longer as simple as merely connecting to the eShop. Now you’ll have to download a PDF application form from Nintendo’s website and mail them a hard copy alongside some proof of purchase.

Although this extension program was initially only announced for Australia, Nintendo of Europe and America have since followed suit with similar plans. Although as of the time of writing, only the European website has any details of the extension, although it does mention a new method of registering not in the original article, involving friend codes.

A Gizmodo article here:
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/08/nintendo-3ds-ambassador-program-registration-extended/

When Nintendo dropped the 3DS base price to $250, they tried to soothe early adopters with an “Ambassador Program” that gifted 10 NES and 10 Game Boy/Game Boy Advanced titles from the Nintendo eShop. In Australia, the program’s sign-up window ended at midnight last night according to a Nintendo spokesperson, but Gizmodo has learned this will now be extended. Here’s what you need to know if you haven’t already registered.

Importantly, you’ll still need to have purchased the 3DS on or before August 11th. So if you purchased the 3DS today, you’re out of luck. (On the upside, there’s a bunch of 3DS floating around right now).

Instead of being automatically registered for the program by connecting to the Nintendo eShop, 3DS owners will now have to download a PDF from Nintendo Australia’s website, and post in that form along with proof of purchase. You’ll have until September 30 to do so.

The form hasn’t yet been uploaded to Nintendo’s site, but it will appear here: http://gamesites.nintendo.com.au/nintendo3ds-ambassador-program/en_AU/index.php

It isn't going to extend sales any further that it already has. In order to submit the form, you need a proof of purchase (a receipt, or some form of purchase confirmation) that dates on or before August 11th. I would imagine that not everyone has a wireless router, so this is a good method to provide the program to gamers who were unable to connect before the deadline. Also a good extension for people who purchased the system from an Online retailer ahead of time, and didn't receive the system until after the 11th.

Eh, this only benefits those people that bought the system before the original deadline but didn't bother to connect to the shop. I got my hopes up for nothing.

I can't wait until I play metroid fusion again. thanks for the heads up op.

anyways in before the "not a deal" trolls posts and flames on this thread.

Good news for me since I accidentally didn't do the online registration (thought you just had to connect your 3DS online/eShop thing some time between when you bought it and 8/11, didn't realize it was between the announcement and deadline).

Will this also work if I bought at the new price early at walmart on the 11th? My update didn't complete until after midnight so I might have missed out.
