Looks like Nintendo is going to use this program to drive 3DS sales.

Missed the deadline for free NES and GBA games? Nintendo adds handy mail in option.
Gizmodo Australia reports you’ll be able to register until September 30, although it’s no longer as simple as merely connecting to the eShop. Now you’ll have to download a PDF application form from Nintendo’s website and mail them a hard copy alongside some proof of purchase.
Although this extension program was initially only announced for Australia, Nintendo of Europe and America have since followed suit with similar plans. Although as of the time of writing, only the European website has any details of the extension, although it does mention a new method of registering not in the original article, involving friend codes.

When Nintendo dropped the 3DS base price to $250, they tried to soothe early adopters with an “Ambassador Program” that gifted 10 NES and 10 Game Boy/Game Boy Advanced titles from the Nintendo eShop. In Australia, the program’s sign-up window ended at midnight last night according to a Nintendo spokesperson, but Gizmodo has learned this will now be extended. Here’s what you need to know if you haven’t already registered.
Importantly, you’ll still need to have purchased the 3DS on or before August 11th. So if you purchased the 3DS today, you’re out of luck. (On the upside, there’s a bunch of 3DS floating around right now).
Instead of being automatically registered for the program by connecting to the Nintendo eShop, 3DS owners will now have to download a PDF from Nintendo Australia’s website, and post in that form along with proof of purchase. You’ll have until September 30 to do so.
The form hasn’t yet been uploaded to Nintendo’s site, but it will appear here: http://gamesites.nintendo.com.au/nintendo3ds-ambassador-program/en_AU/index.php
