I know that the 3DS is available at Amazon to pre-order for $250, but you can also pre-order one at Gamestop for only $50. Just took care of mine. They will call you soon to give you a color option. Good way to go if you don't have the full amount to reserve on e through Amazon. I looked for a similar post and couldn't find one, so hopefully I'm not being too repetitive.

Sorry, good point about Amazon not charging until they ship. Yeah, so I'm a noob that's just trying to help.

News Flash: SOME PEOPLE HAVE GS CREDIT!!! OMFGWTFBBQ!!!

Good post, OP... these idiots would never know a good one if it hit them in their pockmarked faces.

Uh, yeah, unless you have Amazon gift card credit like some of us do (from trading in games there). In that case, they take the full $250. I actually want to preorder at GS not so much because it is only $50 vs $250 but because I'd rather blow through my GS credit first before using my Amazon credit. And on gaming items like this I might as well use GS credit. Plus I can get it day 1 that way (as opposed to waiting for 2-day shipping from Amazon).

And yes, I think GS has been taking preorders for a while. Hopefully there isn't overwhelming demand for these things in the short term because I am out of town and want to preorder at my local GS at home but can't do that till Saturday. I had meant to do it last week, but, well, I just forgot. If both GS and Amazon cut off preorders by then I'll be pissed ;). I don't want to do a backup Amazon preorder because I have promo credit (in addition to the gift card credit) and I'm not 100% convinced I'd get that back if I cancelled.

I was under the impression that Gamestop will happily take your $50 and put your name on the list, and that you wouldn't find out until much later whether or not you made the first shipment...

I don't have any credit right now on amazon sow I can't mess around with it, but I am pretty sure you can make it so that it doesn't apply your credits toward any given order. I think it's some how connected to changing your payment method.

This is correct, you can change payment method to be a credit card instead of Amazon credit.
Toys R Us is taking preorders also and you only have to put down $20.
Can't argue with that one at all!

I actually appreciate this post OP. Didn't realize this launches @ $249, I thought the big, greedy N would figure-out a way to launch it @ $199 in the US. Sure, the initial batch will sell-out @ $249, but the kids that need their Moms to buy this for them and going to be crying in their Captain Crunch. I can see a clueless soccer mom laying-out at the magical $199 price-point on a handheld they don't understand, but not $249.
