Would buying a 3rd party N64 expansion pak be a bad idea compared to the official Nintendo one?

Could it ruin my Nintendo 64 or not work?

Only reason I ask is because you can get a 3rd party for like $10 and the official for $25.

What would you recommend?

I don't know how true it is since I only own the official Expansion Pack (I got it with Donkey Kong 64 back in 1999) but I remember reading that the 3rd party ones can overheat.
You should probably put this in the advice forum. ;)
My bad. I knew I put this in the wrong forum thanks. #-o

Hopefully a mod can move it or i'll lock it and put it in the advice forum.

I was in the same boat just hit up some flea markets, I found an official Nintendo one on Sunday for $10 on ebay they will run you at least $18

^ That.
If you have any type of flea market or resale shops go pay them a visit. Keep an eye on local yard sales too, I use Bookoo to keep track of some around this area. They can be expensive if you pay the convenience fee for getting them online or at a game store, but hey. I found an official Nintendo one this weekend for $5. It can be done!

PROTip: When looking at Yardsales/junk stores/etc. - look for whole N64 units. Check to see if they have the expansion pak already installed in them. :D I've picked up one or two used this way. People sell used N64's for cheap ($5-$10) because they're just not worth that much. Meanwhile, anyone selling an N64 expansion pak probably knows what it is enough to know that it's worth $20-$25ish.

Yeah I have done that before, you can literately buy an N64 for $5 at a yard sale, yank the expansion pack and sell it for like $20. I haven't seen a N64 in recent years that didn't come with the expansion pack pre-installed.

i have two n64s.. one has the expansion pack that came with donkey kong 64 and the other is from like mad catz or something

never had a problem or could tell a difference since i got them in the 90s

Man I just think people around here are a little too savvy about video games, most people want at least $30 for an N64 and if it happens to come with the expansion pack then it's at least $50ish

That is a lot, I have picked them up for $1 with expansion pack at yard sales. I think you can get them for $20-30 on ebay with expansion.

I've never seen expansion pack ones at yardsales or thrift stores. Then again, almost every N64 I see at those places doesn't even come with a controller.
