42 inch HD Plasma....

dell had one for 3500 and I know they occasionally have sales for small precentages off

How much money does he have?

Most plasmas do not have the BEST picture as a lot of the blacks tend to look grayish....it is a known fault of plasma...not true blacks. Although, they are a lot better now than before.

Pioneer is always a GREAT brand...but you pay through the nose and out the ass for it.

I've read bad reviews about Dell and Gateway

Check out www.epinions.com for reviews.

I have the Panasonic HD Plasma TV and I have no buyer's remorse at all. It is the best purchase I've ever made.

Panasonic is a nice setup thats for sure. It gets my bid.

Also make sure the plasma is NOT EDTV....that is just junk. They are like $2000 cheaper, but not TRUE HDTV.

He is probably going to spend over $4000 easy for a decent Plasma.

You can get a 70" LCD from Sony for almost the same price....I would go BIGGER if that was the case ;)

I read an article a few months ago about Plasma Tvs on Consumer Reports. The Cons they mentioned on Plasma Tvs are that they take a lot of power (electric bill will go up), that the monitor tends to get pretty hot and there is a risk of screen burn so it was not recommended for video games or images that are pretty consistent like a Stock Ticker. You could get a 42" for about $2K HDTV ready and about twice as much for HDTV integrated. Consumer Reports recommended LCD TVs instead for a brighter picture, and no burn screen issue. The only drawback so far is that currently they are not going down on price as fast as Plasmas have and that it the lifetime of LCD TV, the lens will have to be replaced which costs about $300 plus depending on the size of the screen. Not sure if Plasma will be the way to go...but I do not have one myself so I am just letting you know about the Consumer Reports report so that your friend can be informed. Good luck!

I thought LCD lasted a LOT longer than Plasma....

Yep, backing life rating:
LCD = 60,000 hours
Plasma - 20,000 hours

Everything is turning to LCD it seems....a lot of the comparisons are saying it is better than Plasma.

I would love the 70" LCD, but I already have a 55" Mitsubishi RPTV that is just GREAT.

Plus, I don't have a money tree growing in my back yard

EDTV is not junk, imo. OP, tell your friend to check out avsforum.com. It's a very informative forum for anything to do with home audio-video stuff.

EDTV is a lot cheaper, and depending on the main uses for your tv, it might even be better. EDTV handles native resolutions of dvds at least as well as, if not better, than HDTV. Also, normal tv signals (non- HDTV feeds) look significantly better on EDTV than HDTV. In addition, if you sit farther than about 6 feet from your television for a 42" set, most people won't be able to see a noticeable difference between EDTV and HDTV even using HDTV signals.

I've been shopping for a Plasma also, and the discussion at avsforum is definitely nudging me towards Panasonics. You can buy a 42" Panasonic EDTV display only (no tuners or speakers) for just over $2000 shipped, a 42" Panasonic EDTV with tuners and speakers for just under $3000. The HDTV versions are about $1000 extra.

I don't even think they make 70" flat panel LCDs, let alone flat-panel LCDs for $4-5000. You're probably thinking of LCD projection TVs, which have the disadvantages of being projection TVs.

I just meant EDTV was not true HDTV and most of the times the average consumer does not realize that. Yes, it may have a nice picture and everything....I guess HDTV is the way to go if you have an HDTV cable provider.

Yes, and the 70" TV was an LCD Rear Projection...which I think is just fine, but that is me.

Hear is a little on EDTV vs HDTV:

I bought a LCD, burned the lamp out and had to pay $400. It got replaced incorrectly burned out again in 3 weeks.

Got pissed off traded it back in had Plasma ever since.

Yes the new DLPs are suppose to be very nice. I think I would buy a DLP or LCD. The LCDs are not going to be as big as the Plasma screens. But the burn in issue with the Plasma screen means no gaming on it. Which means I would not buy a plasma.

What brand of LCD was it? Why wasn't it replaced under warranty?

It was a Sony LCD. I didn't get the Warranty because it was around $400, and I figured that hey it will probably burn out in about 3 years and I will just pay the $400 then to replace the lamp myself.

It didn't even last me 3 months (must have been faulty), so I said ok fine I will pay for the lamp. They botched the job (I don't know how friggin' hard it could be to fix it), so I ended up switching it out because at that point I was pretty ticked off.

Anyways, I feel the Plasma has a clearer picture, so I am happy with the way things turned out.

What TV's are suitable for massive amounts of gaming? They aren't supposed to be front or rear projection yes? And, can LCD's and Plasma's handle long gaming hours?

I've never had any problems on my 55" Mits Rear Projection HDTV...I've had it for over 3 years and played games on it often....no sign of burn in. For something to REALLY show burn in, it has to be on the screen for a LOOOONG time. Pause the game for a second if you are worried.

Plasma is the worst for burn in.....LCD is decent from what I hear, but it might have blurring a bit if something is moving REALLY fast.

Every TV has benefits and downfalls.....I say, if you have the room for a RPTV get it....they are the cheapest and produce GREAT pictures.

I know Plasma, LCD, DLP are all attractive though...I would LOVE to upgrade, but just can't fathom spending $2000-$5000 on a NEW TV....sicne mine works just fine.

This TV has a GREAT picture too.....I would love to get it, but it's 5" smaller and costs money....damn you money

Plasmas are not good for gaming for the high chance of burn in screen (again according to Consumer Reports). For playing Video games, it was not recommended. Plus if you play for long hours, the set tends to get very hot and it consumes lots of electricity.

LCDs were highly recommended if you are going Thin and it has no issue with burn screen. However, you may have to replace the lamp sometime down the line (on the Consumer Reports article I read).

If you got the $ and if you follow Consumer Reports' suggestion, then LCD will be fine for playing video games.

I just got a Panasonic TH37PW5UZ for $1250 at BJ's. It does not have a tuner or speakers, but I am going to use my HT and my cable box. I was planning on buying a plasma any time soon, but for the price.

I know my friend picked up a 50" Plasma from Best Buy for about $2500. Although, he works there and they were selling them to employees CHEAP.

Great deal....although he had a 65" RPTV Pioneer....although, the Plasma will look better in his room (small room)....everyone always says, NEVER GO SMALLER....the TV will shrink on you.

That is my problem.....55" RPTV, although I will keep it for a while

Agreed, I think I may have the same 55" Mitsubishi RPTV. I have had it for 2 years and I play a ton of games on it for long hours and there are no signs of burn in at all, so this should not be an issue with the rear projections.
