I read that older model ps2's don't support 480p, and I recently bought some component cables and my ps2 is pretty old and the games don't look that good. Its a clear picture, but the models are really jaggy. Im assuming this is because my ps2 is putting out 480i? I guess my next option is to buy a newer model ps2?

Not all games support progressive scan, and you need to hold X and triangle while the system is turning on to get the option to activate progressive scan. It is true that not all system support 480p, so if you are already doing the above you need to get a new system. If its a fat PS2, the box would have a yellow tab on the corner with a + sign in it.

A PS2 is a PS2. It doesn't matter if you have a new or old model. If a game supports 480p, you can usually turn it on by holding triangle and X when you start the game up and it'll give you the option... keep in mind that very few games support 480p on the PS2 though. And the reason that a lot of PS2 games look jaggy is because well... they are. There's nothing that can be done about that.
It just seems the games are way more jaggy then they used to be, even for ps2.
They will be for the most part, but its still worth the trade imo. This will give you a good example of what Wii games will look like too on your HD set.

The PStwo supports 480p for DVD playback, it won't do anything for your games since the game has to support an HD resolution. There are websites out there that list what games support HD resolutions. I play Soul Calibur 3 in 480p and it looks fantastic on my HDTV.

The box with the yellow + just means that it plays 480p dvd movies. If you dont have the box, all fat ps2 models that dont have firewire port by the usb ports are the ones that support 480p for dvds. All ps2s fat, slim, launch, doesnt matter, support 480p on some games. GT4 has full HDTV 1080i support.

I didnt say they look bad, I said it was worth the trade off if the game does seem to have more jaggies.

I just can't figure out why even my non HD xbox games look good, yet games like devil may cry 3 look like utter shit. Yes, I know the xbox has better hardware, but its rediculous how pixilated the games are. I guess its just my tv then.

All ps2's support 480p for games. It's the newer ones that have progressive scan for dvd playback.

Does 1080i or 1080p work with component cables too or just HDMI cables

To run 480p what cables would i need would the common white red and yellow video cables work ?

1080i works through component cables. If you're talking about gaming, there aren't any ps2 games that support 1080p, but GT4 supports 1080i and is the only ps2 game that does.

Because it has nothing to do with resolution or progressive scan. The Xbox has built-in hardware for antialiasing and the PS2 does not.

I hooked up my PS2 to a DELL 2405FPW LCD Display via component input. It looks fantastic in 480p. The color is a lot smoother but some graphical elements (especially the characters in the games) still get jaggy. I guess that's how the Graphics engine in the PS2 works and you don't get much antialiasing in those areas.

When in 480i, some games look like piece of shit - vertical banding and jaggy graphics. I don't know where the vertical banding is coming from. It looks like vertical stripes of color gradients.

A question about Widescreen support for some games. Does the PS2 actually send out a widescreen signal or something when you set the game up for widescreen output? For games like Tomb Raider Legend, the PS2 simply outputs a squashed 4:3 frame with the perception that the view is wider. I have to use the "FILL" mode of the display to stretch the frame to fill the screen (which is 16:10 - not the correct aspect ratio for widescreen). For Tomb Raider Legend, it doesn't actually 'stretch' all the way to fill the screen. There are blackbars on both left and right side of the screen, making it somewhere in between, in oddly looking aspect ratio. For this game, I say screw it and play it in non-widescreen mode. Any clue?

Jaggies have nothing to do with 480p vs 480i .. just look at all the 720p XBOX360 games w/ jaggies. Jaggies is a matter of AA .

Progressive scan just cleans up the shimmering and artifacts resulting from fast moving images that are interlaced.

Trust me. It's not your TV. I currently run one of the best projectors under $3K in my home theater and the PS2 looks like ass when hooked up through component. The only exception to this rule are games that run in 480P. Tekken 5 looks amazing. Sly cooper looks like shit.
