I'm currently on the look for the most convenient means of storing.displaying my collection of DVDs/games which has recently exceeded 500+ titles. I've moved and my new location is somewhat linear and has limited wall space for my old shelves. Currently been looking into a turn-stile type shelf that can hold 500+ items(ie. this on Amazon), while taking up as little space as possible.

Anyone have any recommendations on the storage shelf/rack itself or perhaps a online vendor who specializes in this sort of thing? IKEA and random searches leave me w/ little options that I want and/or am comfortable w/ purchasing. Any help appreciated. =]

I don't have any recommendation, unfortunately, but that swivel tower looks awesome. It's a shame it's so pricey, I might have to buckle and get one anyways as it seems like a perfect way to store things without a large amount of space (from my estimation about 200 of the Universal Game Cases for cartridge titles would fit in that).

Have you looked at www.mediashelving.com? It has more of a merchant slant as far as the displays offered, but maybe it'll give you some ideas of alternatives. It might also be worth your while to build your own tower if you have some handy friends, which is something I've been thinking about trying.

Sorry for the lack of advice, hope someone else can help as I'm clearly interested as well. :p

We actually just recently purchased that black swivel tower for our game room and I have to say its perfect. I takes up very little space compared to a couple of different media towers we looked at. We still haven't filled out the entire thing, but its nice to know we don't have to keep buying stands now that this one has plenty of room.

I'm interested in one as well... My 500+ shelf is getting full and my 250+ shelf is completely full, and wall space is limited. I could probably fit 3 of these in the same room as the 500+ shelf, but that'd be way expensive.

Have you thought about BYO or having someone make you something custom? I know a lot of people don't think this way but to me displaying tons of DVDs, CDs, games etc. just doesn't look good. Hide that shit! I have a piece of furniture in my TV room that was custom built with 6 pull-out drawers that hold about 100 cases each (which I will never ever fill) and everything is nice and neat but when guests come over it doesn't look like a college dorm room or something. It wasn't that expensive to build and it looks great (it also houses my consoles, cable box, controllers, remotes, etc.). Also, why does anyone need to own that many movies? Have you thought about selling some of them to make some room? I don't know...

Any guesstimate on the total # of regular DVD sized cases this could hold? =]

Not wanting to dive right into any sort of do-it-yourself just yet. No telling how long I'll currently be at my current location and if I were to build something I would probably make something that would be beyond a hassle to move. I own this many items because I collect and this should have been known by my initial post. =]

I agree with everything jav said. I'm 23, I've been buying DVDs for a while, I used to feel more like the OP and now I feel more like you. I also have/had ~500 DVDs, I used to just have them all on a huge rack in the living room, I enjoyed the selection, but the older I get the more I regret all those purchases and dislike the clutter. I wish I just rented everything I wanted to watch, purchased the select few that I would watch more than 2 - 4 times (depends on the price)... collecting just doesn't make sense, I guarantee most people with DVD/game "collections" have mostly common stuff that you can find at your local Best Buy right now, at which point the "collection" is really just a display of how much money you've spent on it. If you want to collect something then collect something in which the actual collection is a hobby, like some sort of cards or stamps or etc, things with variable rarity. Some people collect videogames properly -- like, they seek rare games and enjoy the hunt -- but most people use "collector" as a title to mask their shopping addiction, most seemingly do so in denial.

Anyway.. more about me, since that's what this is all about. I'm now in the position where I want to sell the majority of my DVDs and games, keep a select few and store them somewhere out of the way (drawer would be perfect). This is a great thread.

Pics or it didn't happen. But seriously, if you find the time, I'd like a visual.

You can kind of get the idea... This thing sits under my plasma which hangs on the wall above it. The drawers are on the sides and there are doors in the middle - the tinted glass is so IR signals can get through but the glass is really dark so you can't see in (the flash from my camera makes it look transparent). It's not perfect but it does the job.

[removed pics - too large!]

I guess I was asking why you collect - is it all necessary? I have a drawer of games and a drawer of DVDs and it's too much. I usually eBay stuff when it gets out of hand and I really need to get on that...

Now back on topic, anyone have a recommendation of any kind for this size of a collection in limited space? I'll be picking something up w/ some of my tax money and want to buy from a reliable source.

I consider gaming/movie watching as one of my hobbies so I have chosen to collect video games/media. I collect because I am a fan of gaming/media, not because I am out to have a valuable collection of rarities in the end and possibly turn a profit, it's because I enjoy said games/media that I have purchased; I have a fair collection of baseball cards circa 70s-90s that have lost significant value over the past years. A collection is obviously going to mean more to the person collecting than some one who does not feel a collection(even of non-valuable/non rare items) is worth the time and effort of building said collection. Thanks for your opinion. =]

Collecting anything is never necessary, I'm sure every collector has various reasons for their collections. Very rarely will I get a price that I feel is adequate(as goes w/ most used things) and as stated above, I collect games I enjoy and should I ever have the desire to play a game out of my collection down the road I'll have the ability to do so. =]

Have you looked HERE, HERE or HERE?

Go to the IKEA store near you. They had something that had drawers had spots for the dvd's to be on their side and flip through them. Kinda like the do it yourselfer's pic but when you take something out everything else stays in place and doesn't move. I'm also a fan of hiding the movies. Though mine are on a shelf currently.

My 2 cents. I collect, but mostly RPGs, which are mostly harder to find. And I actually do want a shelf with a door so it's not easy for visitors to tell how much I have. Do I have a spending problem? Sure, when there are deals for $3 dvd sets and $5 games. And I do consider it a hobby, sort of like hunting treasures with a GPS.

And there are some artboxes and CEs that I really like and take up a lot of room (Haruhi SE 1-4, Mai-Hime/Otome boxes, Last Exile box, Raiho plush, Gantz ball which I actually hate but fits Gantz so well, etc). Some of them are aesthetically pleasing to put on display, like the LotR extended DVDs, which I keep on the TV stand no matter what.

I find the best place to acquire tv cabinets is B&M stores. You simply can't find what you want online simply because you can't get the physical dimensions down. Try IKEA.

Do not buy anything from ikea. I bought two shelves for games there. Worst assembly ever. Plus, the metal is all curvy so the games keep falling down. I need a swivel!

TRU had some nice ones that held wii/360 controllers, but I hadn't seen any ps3 ones.

those links were pretty good. i found

http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-3843...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265177705&sr=8-11

at a circuit city for 40 so...that worked out ok. it holds the majority of my movies, but not enough of my games/blus. when i move aain, i'll probably get

http://www.mediastoragecenter.com/Prepac-CMA-1520-QUAD-WIDTH-WALL-STORAGE.htm

or

http://www.mediastoragecenter.com/Venture-Horizon-2403-Triple-50-inch-Media-Tower.htm

i was thinking about a door, but then i know i'd leave the doors open :p

This touches upon a wish of mine: to have an overhead compartment or roll-cage on the ceiling. Short of this I've built a system out of a hellwork of bookshelves, milk crates, cardboard boxes and rubbermaid containers.

I would recommend finding a Blockbuster Video that is closing and buying one of their fixtures. There should be a bunch of stores closing this year. The wall racks they have can hold about 80 standard size Dvds/Games per shelf easily and if you wait until the last week of the sale, you can get it for like $10. I replaced 4 dvd racks and really made alot of space by getting one of these.

Anyone know of some good CD/DVD shelves that have doors (preferably glass)? Also I'm looking for some suggestions on display cases.

IKEA is the way to go if you have one within 3 hours and a car big enough to bring back some 6' long boxes. You can configure the shelves any way you want. I think the Billy line is the first thing you should think of. Unfortunately, glass doors may double the price of the generally very cheap Billy line. Still, check it out online.

I have probably $1k worth of Ivar shelves for my game collection. With Ivar you can line a room with shelves any way you want, corners, any height up to 7', whatever. Can't beat Ivar for modular shelving.

I have two Leslie Dame revolving media towers and two Venture Horizons ones which I use for my pb books. Between the two I would definitely recommend Leslie Dame - those shelves are great and have lasted me almost six years and three moves whereas the Venture Horizons are poorly designed and broke during the first move.

One of the things that annoyed me most about the VH shelves was that they didn't have holes all down the sides, instead they had clusters of holes every few inches which meant that the shelves weren't fully adjustable. Not only did it waste space, it made my books look horrible because of the varying distance between shelves.

Nice ideas i have been looking for some ideas. I like the blockbuster idea but none near are closing as of yet!! I have around 120 360/ps3/wii games, 120 blu-rays and about 60 HD DVDs.

I have a local IKEA and due to limited wall space and their very customizable options(yet generally wall-space consuming) options I'm looking for other alternatives. Pretty sure I'll be sticking w/ a rotating turn-stile type shelf for the time being. Keep those ideas/recommendations coming. =]

---edit---

The best I've came across that fits my needs and budget is this from www.allmultimediastorage.com. Still contemplating though. Should I place a order in the near future, I'll be sure to post my experience w/ them.

I don't know why anyone would own more than one or two movies but games are fun to collect. And in my case I don't have much else to fill the walls so I display my games instead of hide them. Although it would be nice to have them in one unit rather than a few smaller ones.

Those finds are pretty interesting. I'm in a similar situation where I've outgrown my current storage. I have wallspace, but lots of Games, Movies and CDs, so I need to keep the total cost per media item down. That spinner is $.36/DVD. The larger 2393 model is $280, and works out to $.37/DVD. Has anyone seen any bulk media storage that is less than that? If not, it's really tempting.

I've actually considered switching to sleeves before, as it would make it a lot nicer the next time we move. The problem is that I don't want to throw out the manual and cover, and sleeves that can store those (like DiscSox) are $.75 per DVD. Has anyone else considered switching to sleeves?

I have three of those for my CD collection and will be getting a fourth in the near future. I'm a big fan of those towers.

Any chance you could toss a pic or two up of them? More curious about how well it could hold larger box sets etc. Some of my Anime box sets might as well have been using old school candy tins and am curious how items that are noticeably larger than your standard dvd case would fit into these shelves.

Sure, I can post a couple photos (probably tomorrow), but like I said I'm using it to store my CD collection, and they are pretty uniform in size, so I don't know if it'll help you. But if you think it'll be helpful then I'll post some pictures as soon as I get a chance.
