60-page, full-color art book with pre-order of Etrian Odyssey III

Traitorious

CAGiversary!
Supposed limited supplies according to the Atlus Faithful email that went out this afternoon.

Amazon is currently the only retailer that has a blurb about this artbook on the product page so far, but I assume the other retailers listed in the email (GS, Walmart, Buy.com, goHastings, VideoGamesPlus, HMV) will put up something about it eventually.

With Atlus' more recent track record on pre-order bonuses, it may be safe to say that if you pre-order you will probably receive the book.

Awww, yeah...
same here. but strange journey is incredible.
Never got into EO, but I agree about SMT: Strange Journey. Best game of 2010 in my opinion.

Is the picture of the DS game case in scale with the art book? I can't find info of the size... From the look of it, it's not a postcard looking size. 60 pages is really 30 physical pages, so it's fairly thin. What I'm saying is... you can get high resolution scans and print on matte paper yourself (or DIY project to backup your original). Of course, you won't do this to a 100+ pages art book, it's too much work then...
Is this a JRPG or an action RPG? Should I get my niece this game or Dragon Quest 9 for Xmas?
This is a very hardcore, old-school dungeon crawler that requires a lot of patience, dedication and strategy in your party management/development. The series is known for its extreme difficulty and as such, it is not for the feint of heart. I would suggest asking your niece if this sound like a fun challenge for her as well as looking at some gameplay videos to get a better idea of what kind of game this is.

i will go with dragon quest instead. she just beat chrono trigger for the first time even though she had it a year and a half.
Thank you kindly for the write-up, and the recommendations. :)

Truthfully the main pull of the game for me is that you can name and create your own party, choosing which classes everyone has and whatnot. I'm a sucker for that sort of customization, so anywhere that is I'm likely to be interested, regardless of genre. I haven't played a true dungeon crawler before, but I enjoy any challenge I can get!

Though your warning regarding EO1 made me wonder how easy it is to gimp your party. Are there classes that are broke and useless? Hmm.
Not really! All classes are [surprisingly] relatively equal. The toughest bonus boss you basically require 4 members of certain classes and one character of your choice. You can actually do multiple builds for certain classes also (for instance, the landschneckt who is your basic "warrior" can go a path with swords or axes. The medic can be a "battle medic" or healer as well). Some characters can be made just to harvest resources, some can be made as support later on.

I can personally say the only class I never used in EO I was the Ronin. The troubadour appears useless, but later on has a TP (MP) regen spell that's useful for staying in the dungeon long. Plus like I said, you can reset a character for a loss of half your levels - if you do one at a time you can get your characters "caught up" to the rest of your party.

As for Strange Journey/Dark Spire, they have the "party customization" aspect as well - Strange Journey moreso. If you've never played a Shin Megami Tensei game, you basically capture and combine different demons you find and use them to attack. I guarantee if you like RPGs you'll fine one of the games fun - they're just very easy to get bored with and I wouldn't recommend more than 1-2 at a time.

You wont be at all disappointed if you start with EOI, EOII, or EOIII; however I'd assume EOIII has more variety than EOI and EOII

Definitely a better choice. EO has virtually no plot/storyline until you're 10-15 hours in, even then it's horribly basic. I'd truly think FF 1 has more of a plot than EO. DQIX on the other-hand seems to be a beautiful, well-crafted story based RPG with plenty of exploring. EO has a lot of exploring as too, but you're more so exploring maps and not environments. Half the time you're looking at the bottom screen which hosts the map.

Are you talking about EO1 or EO2? In EO1, you pretty much had to have a Medic for the majority of the game, and a Paladin for the dragons. You needed both for the extra 5 floors, iirc.

One class I never used on either was Alchemist myself. In the first one, I had two survivalists, who were more effective on bosses and still held their own on normal mobs. On the second, Hexer was just too uber.

EO3 is supposedly more balanced so you don't have to have something, but we'll see.

EO1. I had a Battle Medic, Protector, Sword-lands (till I retired him at 70 and made him axe), Survivalist, and Troubador/Alchemist (switched between the two). I used the Dark Hunter for a bit, but stopped using him to switch to a protector.

Any Etrian Odyssey game gets an instant preorder from me. The art book is just gravy :)

Got it in my Gold Box at Amazon.

Bumping this to mention that I got an email from Amazon saying that the title qualifies for 99 cent release date delivery. Edit your shipping speeds!

How's that now?

never got that email.. Not really sure 99 cents is worth 1 day sooner

I bought looking at it this way, the last few EO games have held price at $20ish to $30ish, with pre order bonuses they are worth another $10-$15. Chances are fair to good that this is the cheapest you will ever see this game ;)
The guys at my gamestop are giving me the artbook early. :D
I can't fuck'ing wait to pick it up tonight!
I wont bother with the art book until I'm done with the game
I don't like spoiling anything before

This is not EO related, but I'm a little disappointed Atlus is not doing another artbook for their Knights in the Nightmare PSP release like they did for the DS release. The inclusion of a free digital copy of Yggdra Union as a download is very cool, however I'm much more partial to owning a hard copy of all my games.

Can't wait for the EO III w/ artbook release next week, though! Atlus has consistently earned my respect with each new release, and has quickly become one of my most beloved publishers in the industry, hands down.

Isn't the game out on next Tuesday 9/21?

Btw, how's the quality of the artbook?

Possible that since the artbook is bigger than the DS box they sent it separately and earlier than the game.

yea if it was a hard copy i would of got Knights in nightmare even though i own the DS verison.. i have no use for a download veri.

Got back a little late tonight, and couldn't pick it up. :bomb:
They didn't mail me the artbook; I'm friends with some of the managers at my local Gamestop and they give me pre-order bonuses early if they get them early.
I'll pick it up tomorrow and will let you guys know more. I'll post a pic if I get the chance.
Sorry for the hype.

I picked up the artbook today.
My gamestop had just one more left at around 7 PM today. The pages are pretty good quality & feels thick & solid. The book has 3 sections, one each for every EO version.
Definetely not a book you want to miss.
