Does anyone know a site which list disc's which support Dolby Digital EX? I'm planning on getting a 7.1 speaker setup so I'm interested on renting or picking up a few discs to try it out on, hopefully one or two good Martial Arts flicks with it(is hoping "Kung Fu Hustle" but doubts it).

That's a nice list....DTS Discrete discs are great, since each channel was encoded separately. Those are true 6.1 setups. I have a 6.1 setup, the rear center can be active at times....You can also use your setup to have the Rear speakers spread it's sound field to the rear center also.

No 7.1 discs yet

So I havent followed up on this subject

Lets say I have a DTS disc could it also play as dolby digital 5.1? and would it sound the same or is DTS better?

My receiver has DTS but I have the thing on auto detect and I dont believe I have ever really seen it light up the DTS mode (except in its demo)

DTS will not play under DD 5.1. Most DVDs that have both DD and DTS will play DD by default; you have to go into setup and select DTS. Both DDEX and DTSES will play on previous iterations of their respective formats (DDEX will play on a DD 5.1 receiver, and DTSES will play on a DTS receiver).

Thanks for that info. I was worried the Onkyo home theater receiver I want to buy would be screwed when DTS updates but I guess I'm safe then when DTS and Dolby upgrade to TRUE 7.1?!

thanks for the list!!
I recently bought myself a decent home theatre surround and am looking for great DVD's to watch with awesome sound mix.

Yes, DTS will generally sound better. If your receiver can handle it, then select DTS from a DVD menu (usually under Setup or Sound)

Check out the Saving Private Ryan DTS...opening scene is GREAT

Also, my receiver will automatically switch to the correct mode...whether it's DTS-ES or DD5.1. Of course, that is after selecting the right track on the DVD. I usually leave my surround-back speaker on MATRIX though, since I like sound to come out of my center-rear. However, if a TRUE 6.1 disc is out, it will have a discrete channel devoted to it.
