8.9" Acer Netbook with Built-in Mobile 3G Internet $99 (Radio Shack)

Telemakhos

CAGiversary!
Sorry if this breaks protocol for not being a game, but I figured many of us are techies, anyways:

Be sure to read the fine print on the radioshack website. And be warned there are early termination fees. Don't think you can move out of AT&T's coverage range. Plus, they'll send you a bill for $300 for the laptop.

That said, if you have an AT&T cell phone and could extend or upgrade your service, it might not be a bad deal.

But yeah, you are locked into a 2-year deal with a $60/month AT&T Internet Mobile plan.

Lots of great reviews on Amazon:

Hope this helps someone out. I might swing by to check one out.

How fast is the 3G network, should I decided to run it to my desktop?

Just checked this out in person, and have to say I'll probably stick with my HP 15.4 AMD laptop. While it's not the lightest thing out there, it did only cost me $225, and I just use available WIFI.

Just to clarify, I spoke to the rep and he said the AT&T 3G Internet service is on the SIM card inserted into the laptop. So, essentially, you could plug the SIM into any laptop, or even a desktop to receive the connection, which he said is just under DSL speed.

I think I'll pass for now to avoid any type of contract. Besides, I prefer TMobile, anyways....

Just a heads up...!

According to the site, the termination fee is only $175. Couldn't one buy it for 99, then terminate the contract before the first bill and pretty much get the netbook for $274 dollars? (That's roughtly 76 dollars off the price of a new one.)

That covers the early termination fee from AT&T. AT&T, from what I was told, then sends you a bill for the difference of the laptop's list price and what you paid for it. So, $499.99 - $99. AT&T essentially are paying for you laptop to promote their 3G service.

They get you both ways.

lol, I friggin hate AT&T. But the Aspire one is a good netbook, not nearly as good as the equally priced MSI Wind though.

I saw that in Wal-Mart for $365, pretty cool little laptop.

I didn't know you needed a contract for the internet though, I didn't look at it that close.

Yeah, Radio Shack it still pushing that deal. I decided to pass it up because I still have my HP dv6605us that I got during Comp USA's liquidation for $225 earlier in the year.

Problem is, my HP is heavy and I've traveled a lot this year and brought it with me all over. It fits fine in my briefcase, but I never forget I'm carry it because of its weight.

It's nice having a CD/DVD drive, though, as opposed to having to plug on in via USB, which is just something else extra to carry.

I'm feel I'm better off just getting cheaper internet at home, through Qwest, and having wireless in the house, and just use WIFI on the road, which has worked out pretty well. Again. Heavy, but at least I can render 3D on it. I'm not sure the Acer can handle Maya or MAX, or any Adobe products.
