Hi everyone. I have a shoutout for suggestions, and this is just the right forum.

A quick background: Christmas is coming up. "Officially", my fiance is Christian, and I'm Jewish. The only thing this means is that we get to celebrate (and give gifts for) both holidays in December! Yay. Every year I put together 8 smaller presents for her in addition to her Christmas present.

This year, I want to make them games.

She's a big horror buff, and loves the horror games. So I'm looking to get a hold of 8 cheapass games we can play over the year.

Right now, we already own:
Resident Evil 0, 1, 4, Veronica X, the online one that doesn't work anymore
Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 (for PC only, so it's a possibility on a console)
Fatal Frame 1

So far, I have coming to me:
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Half-Life (inspired by Stephen King's "The Mist", one of her favorites).

That leaves 5 slots open-- and I'm open to suggestions.

I'd love to get a hold of Eternal Darkness (and maybe Goomba can help with that one). Fatal Frame 2 would be great, but is probably out of my price range (if EB's used shelf is any indication).

What do you think? What are some good, scary, cheapass games I should be looking for / keeping an eye out for? We have Master System, NES, Super Nintendo, Genesis, Gamecube, XBox, PS1, PS2, have a PS3 on the way and will be getting a Wii next year. No 360 yet (Dead Rising-- le sigh).

Pre-emptive: If I could find enough for a Trade X, I'd gladly do it for Dead Fall (the space one, right?)

Thanks!

Bioshock! Although since it just came out on PS3 it's a little pricey =( Can your PC run games well? Although might be less cozy. Does she usually play and you watch, you play and she watch, or she play alone?

You can also get The Orange Box which would give you Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 on top of the Half-Life you're getting.

i'm into all things horror. awesome list.

i'd also add the thing for xbox/pc/ps2. it's a pretty awesome game and definitely has a creepy atmosphere. i picked it up used at ebgames for $10 over two years ago so i'm guessing you can find it real cheap now.

if you're looking to get a deal on dead space, it's worth checking out the highdefdigest forums. they've got a pretty good selling section (i've bought a lot of blu-rays there) and i've seen dead space a few times for around $40 shipped. another place to check is the beat goes on. they've got a website and had dead space (amongst a lot of other new games like casino royale) for 39.99. if you have one in your area, they're really good because they'll ship it to your local store. otherwise, they'll ship it to you pretty cheap.

Any budget Wii game, they're so bad it's absolutely ghoooooouuuulish!

Dead Space may be on the expensive side, make it the eight day's gift, you won't regret it.

Or get her a Blockbuster card for unlimited rentals that way she can play Dead Space and other games for whatever system you may have at her own leisure (monthly the service is like $30).

If either of you has ever enjoyed a shooter my vote's to splurge on Left 4 Dead for one of your selections. The game has a ton of replay value, and is pretty much the greatest coop experience I've ever had in a video game.

Wow, amazing suggestions, everyone!

So far, I've added Eternal Darkness, Cold Fear (great suggestion), and Indigo Prophecy (I recall that one being an interesting twist on the serial killer genre). Orange Box would be a great idea (I would love to play Portal)-- but I've been warned by a few gamers that Sony dropped the ball on the PS3 port?

After reading through some reviews (no spoilers, of course), I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for Kuon and Clock Tower 3. I completely forgot that I have a copy of The Thing.

Gameplay-wise: She plays sometimes, but mostly enjoys watching the game play out. So both Kuon and Clock Tower 3 look appealing due to their visuals and story line.

If I can find one more trade-in game, I'll combine it with Madden and pick up Dead Space. I think that's a great idea for a really special 8th day.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I hadn't even heard of some of those games.

A few suggestion maybe be Little Big Planet if you get a PS3. You can make a scary level together :)
Also Castlevania Symphony of the Night is on the PSN for download, I think it's around $10.

I know this isn't much of a suggestion, but if you can get your hands on Fatal Frame 2 you NEED to. (you suggested this, I did read the post). I bought this new from TRU a long time ago (no longer have it though, sorry) for $15, and it was easily the creepiest game I've ever played in my entire life. I don't get freaked out easily, but it was the only game I couldn't play with the lights off. Those ghosts are just beyond creepy.

Offtopic..

Hmm. This thread was in shopping discussion board, and it should be. Somehow it was moved to "deal" section when no one here is really talking about deals... Weird.

We sorta are talking about where to get good deals for good horror games...
The Fatal Frame II game also interested me because of the Photo aspect. I loved talking photo's in Bioshock then being graded on them to upgrade my damage on the enemies. Amazing gameplay.

OP, I highly recommend Kuon. I picked it up on a whim at EB when it was only like $9 for a new copy, and man is that game is scary at points. I didn't expect much when I first started playing, but boy did it freak me out...

PS-Brace yourself before looking through any holes :cold:

I agree with you 100% on that. The camera gameplay/combat in Fatal Frame 2 was one thing I loved about it, but mostly just how creepy the atmosphere was. I really liked the photo's in Bioshock too, that was really cool. Hell... all of this talk about Bioshock makes me want to play through it again, but I have waaaaaay too many games on the go! (Fable 2, Fallout 3, Gears 2, plus Naruto and Left 4 Dead in the next two weeks... eek).
Indigo Prophecy (I recall that one being an interesting twist on the serial killer genre).
Avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid. The first half of the game is okay, but the last half of the game is some of the worst tripe I've ever experienced. It's bad. Really, really bad.

I'm going to join in on the Fatal Frame II chorus, though. I picked it up about a year ago. I played the first half hour, then promptly put it back on my shelf. Too bloody scary. I have yet to return to it :)

Call of Cthulhu if you can find it for the original xbox or PC.

And to the guy talking smack about Indigo Prophecy, the ending can be pretty lame if you get a bad one, there is more than one though. Overall I loved that game, but I wouldn't classify it as horror.

Some of the games mentioned (like the 2 I just mentioned) you should still be able to find in Walmart bargain bins.

Ooooh I loved Call of Cthulhu! It's next to impossible to find anymore, but if you can get your hands on it you definitely should! I thought I was the only one who actually played that game...

I thought Indigo Prophecy was pretty good, but I do remember the end was rather messed up. There were multiple endings... but all in all it was a good game.

I also agree with Firestorm though, Orange Box would be a great game to get - as it does have 5 games in one... plus it's pretty cheap at some places. It's kind of got a "horror" feel to it too... but it's got a DAMN AWESOME feel more over.

I know I'm not suggesting many new games... but pretty much all of the good horror games have been mentioned.

The twist in Indigo Prophecy may be completely lame, but it doesn't harm the rest of the game that was great IMHO. Not what I'd call a horrorish-game, but certainly worth a playthrough.

If you're going to get Half-Life, also try taking look at some mods for it. They Hunger series is pretty fun, and Natural Selection has a bit of a horrorish feeling to it.

I also recommend The Thing. It was on PC but I think it was on Xbox aswell.
I'm not sure if its out for the systems your looking for but Condemned is a pretty scary game
I second this. Amazing game, and the first one can be had for easily under $20.

Wow, now this makes me want to really, really find a copy of Fatal Frame II. Everyone I know who has ever talked about it has only said good things. And creepy == good.

I'll add Call of Cthulu to the "wildcard" list, since I recall that being one she was interested in when she was browsing through games a while back.

Alright, I found a copy of Watch Tower 3 at a local eb. $13.50 after the edge discount, so I couldn't resist. They also had Call of Cthulu, but it was over $15. I figured I'd wait until I find it cheaper.

I also saw several copies of Obscure and Obscure 2: The Aftermath, but all were priced over the $25 mark. The co-op horror thing looks interesting, so I'll keep my eye on that one.

On another note: I had a brain fart and ended up with 2 copies of Cold Fear. I can take one back, but rather than sending it back into "the system", if anyone wants it, PM me and we can work something out.

I know you only listed a couple games for the PC, but if you want a fun horror game try Clive Barker's Undying. It was great and based on the original Unreal Engine -- so it should run on pretty much anything other then a cell phone, these days.

And, to make the deal even more appealing, you can get it on Goozex for free (assuming you do not already have an account) -- http://www.goozex.com/trading/games/512-Clive_Barker_s_Undying-PC_Games

Yup, we've got Undying, quite a while ago. Fun and creepy game.

Yesterday we watched the Dead Space prequel movie. Not bad for an extended cut scene. Though after she goes "omg now I totally have to play that game!". So long story short, I'm going to pick it up for her for her birthday next week. I just need to find one more EB Tradable game from one of the local BBVs to do so, but I have all week for that.

Which means I'll need to find a different Day 8 in December. lol

Hi, everyone. First, thank you to everyone for the help finding the games. It's an awesome haul. I'll let you know how it unfolds-- WITH PRIZES! Keep reading.

Yesterday was the first candle, but due to a family gathering it got delayed. So today will be a two-for.

She's requested a treasure hunt, since the games won't find in the Advent Chalendar I made (I'll post pictures). Based on clues, she has to figure out the game's name first (Internet allowed), and then figure where in the house I hid it.

How can you get a prize?

Here's the list of clues she'll get. See how many you can get. (I'll post the answers later on). For each clue there's two parts, the name of the game, and the location where its hidden.

If you can guess the game name, you get 1 point. If you can guess the location, you get 2 points. (Since the locations are a bit "you need to live here to know", I'll accept vague-but-mostly-right answers).

The winner gets bragging rights, and a copy of a game from my "outgoing" pile: Cold Fear for XBox, or Enter the Matrix (Xbox), or... hmm, I'll see what else is there when I get home. I might even be tempted to hunt down a "cheapass" game of your choice from one of the many, many, many, many ebgames around me. =)

One guess per person per clue, please. Closes on the 30th.

Clues in the next post!

Day 1
If l isn't clue enough,
You should seek out the shelf.
Where you'll find both the inspiration for,
And the game itself.

Day 2:
You can't reach this chilly game,
By land or air; only a boat.
Don't be afraid, look for it,
Behind a common chemical that makes eggs float.

Day 3:
Brains are needed for solving the clue,
And for eating in the game, to wit.
It's like a pickle brand without the "r".
Then take away the s and you'll know where to find it.

Day 4:
Every review contains a spoiler,
So today I'll just give you the name.
"Still-Life" is a work of art,
And is where I keep my supplies for the same

Day 5:
After this slasher-flick turned game,
You'll not want to be at school alone.
Find this high-school game nestled,
Amongst a record of your own.

Day 6:
The director of Battle Royal,
Created today's lot.
A word in its title is where its hidden,
Though tower it is not.

Day 7:
Don't let the game drive you insane!
Ask Andrew if you're stumped because he'll know.
Chase away part of the game's title,
By using (and looking under) our supply of glow.

Day 8:
It isn't a bad Star Trek movie
Nor a sequel to Zork.
The corporation will tell you where its hidden,
As well as the one before.

Damn, I think you must be the Riddler. I know what #2 is, but I'm basically at a blank for the others. I am no good at riddles... but good luck to anyone that takes part in this!

Good guesses so far. People know their games.

Okay, I've decided, for the prize: you can chose any "cheapass" game from EB. I'll hunt it down and ship it to you. Open to anyone in North America. Check out the "Lots of

Note: As we discovered yesterday, there is a typo in Day 3's clue. It should read:

Day 3:
Brains are needed for solving the clue,
And for eating in the game, to wit.
It's like a pickle brand without the "r".
Then take away the s and you'll know where to find it.

Anyone may resubmit their day 3 guess if they desire.
