THE GIST:
87 TRU's are closing
Current sale at (will drop to bigger discounts):

10-30% off all consoles
20-50% off all games
20-50% off all guides
40-50% off all accessories

*All discount amounts YMMV. Check the list below for a possible update on where each store is at.
*All items bought cannot be returned or exchanged anywhere (the barcodes will be crossed out with a marker).
*Further discounts should happen every 1, 2 weeks. It seemed at first it would be a YMMV on when, but it seems all stores are dropping prices at the same time.
*Stores will probably close sometime around Feb. 27th, give or take a couple weeks. Really just depends on how much merch is still moving when that time comes.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the store/sale list!

1/7 3AM EDIT: I am going to my TRU tomorrow to shop, as I bet many of the rest of you will too. Post what deals and stores you find and hopefully we can compile something worthwhile here. ^_^

1/7 1PM EDIT: Trying to compile what stores we have confirmed are closing; also adding what seems to be the current sale. Since each store is bought by local liqudators, your discounts may be different and drop slower/faster, so YMMV on the discounts, for better or for worse.

1/8 11PM EDIT: Looks like we are looking at about two weeks for the next drop, which should be to 20% - 40%. The time of the drop and the amount is up to each liqudator, so YMMV when it comes to it. But two weeks should be about right for all the stores. Store list updated, along with return policy. Forgot to ask about exchanges though, doh. >_<

1/11 2:30PM EDIT: Changed closed store total from 72 to 87, 12 of which are being turned into Babys R Us. Closing store list also updated.

1/13 3:30AM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added a note below about "fixture" sale information (which probably varies per store on how they go about selling the stuff off).

1/13 11:45PM EDIT: Updated the closed store list. Added news on possible console discounts.

1/16 3PM EDIT: Looks like Reality's Fringe was right on a nation-wide clearance increase, so thanks to him for the head's up!

1/16 11PM EDIT: Complete closing store list added!

2/9 7:30PM EDIT: Updated %s

I walked into work today for my paycheck and to price adjust some games, and one of the managers took me aside, gave me some paperwork and told me our TRU (Bellingham, WA) along with 72 others are being closed, effective tomorrow. Well, at least my store tomorrow, but I assume everyone else is in the same boat. The earliest they will actually close their doors is Feburary 27th, so there will be plenty of time to take advantage of the sale.

According to the manager, everything will be clearanced for the closing sale starting tomorrow, and only a few things will not be part of that, being video game hardware. I asked about games and she said she didn't know. I don't know exactly what the clearance is going to start at, but I would say 30% (what the GT sale usually starts at) would be a good guess.

If you bought anything from a closing TRU before today and you want to return, exchange, price adjust, whatever, you can still do so. But: everything bought from here on out CANNOT be returned. If they are like my store, they take a big black marker and cross out the UPC. They do this so you cannot return it to another TRU. I didn't get the whole speech, so exchanges may be okay, but no more returns, no more price adjustments.

Also: all TRU coupons, sales, price drops, whatever are no longer valid at the closing stores, since they are not really TRUs anymore.

If not already, you should be seeing soon some sort of poster, fill-out form, whatever in your TRU about selling the fixtures, etc. This includes video game display posters, standees, the playable game set-ups, etc. At my store, it was a cardboard kisok thing with a form you filled out with your contact info and what you want, and they'll contact you with a price. Don't know what things will go for, but you may or may not be able to score some cool stuff.
no markdowns on sytems like the DS or PSP?
Unfortunately there are no discounts on any game systems.
I haven't actually gone down to my local TRU yet, as I figured it wouldn't be closing since it also has a Babies R Us section. Though I just happened to glance in the direction of the store today and there was a big closing sign. So I guess you can add the Federal Way, WA TRU to the list as well... A pity, it was a pretty decent place.
The one near me has a Babies R Us... I think and it's just becoming a Babies R US.

I met the most lunatic clerk at the niagara falls tru today, oh man, this guy was talking to the cash register in a cutsey sort of way, it was really bad and scary. He was seriously talking to the register like .. "come on baby, come on dont do that to me" then i heard him tell another customer that talking to machines makes them work better and that they behave better for you when you talk to them. I was just glad to get out of there!

Lol stay away from the Niagara Falls store (glad its closing) They dont even have an Rzone. I see you live in teh falls. Better just take the treck to the Amherst one, I promise I dont talk to the machines... ya...

Anyway, anyone in the BUFFALO ny, area, we have a PSP for 199 and a DS for 79. Nothing wrong with either of em, just opened by us and marked down. All sealed parts inside, nothing moved around.

Not in the big list in the first post: MI: Battle Creek, Holland, Midland. Funny how everyone on the outside thinks its a great place to work :) Hard to screw up profit in a store kids HAVE to love.
It's being reported on the local news that the Dewitt, NY (near Syracuse) store is closing. As far as I know, the Clay (also near Syracuse) store is NOT closing.
Aw, they both suck and are stuck in time looking mostly as they where since the 1980s. They both have those pull card systems for games. I hate to see the Dewitt one go as it is so much closer to many more interesting stores. Then again, I can understand them closing it as the property there is certainly worth more to them to sell the building off than to keep the store open. I heard that was why Toys R Us was bought out as many of their stores was worth more to sell the property off than to keep the stores running

The Clay one is pretty much in farm land, but the whole area has grown pretty quickly in the last 5 years with expensive new homes and stores popping around the area. I honestly would not be surprised if they sell that TrU as well off to build something better. (And hopefully knock down that dieing 1970s Great Northern Mall as well which is right next to it).

Great news!

One of the guys who works in the R-Zone told me today that our store director said that video game systems will see a 10% clearance discount come this Sunday (probably when everything else will go up in discount, but that's just an assumption on my part). He told me to keep it on the downlow, which means, enjoy the tidbit and spread it on CAG. ^_^

Extremely YMMV at this point just to be safe, but looks good to go, at least at my store.

Well bye bye Toys R us nd hello fagmart, man the one in charlotte was the last one in like over 100 miles nearest charlotte nc, oh well guess i'm back to the bit torrents thanks alot President Bush fixing our economy may all your kids become drunks and druggies.....oops too late!

I tried to scan some guides at TRU yesterday, they were all coming up as "price not found", they were older guides as well. Just to let you all know. I wasnt able to get any guides for cheap. I would assume they would just take the price on the front or back and take the 20% off that for the price so i didnt bother bringing them to the register.

However i know there are 0.01 items still left in the store since i scanned a jigglypuff keychain and it came up 0.01 and the guy gave it to me for that price so that was cool!

You can add Federal Way, WA to the list as well...was driving by the SeaTac Mall today, and lo' and behold out of the corner of my eye, I spot I giant green sign that says this:

Closing : This Location Only!

Pity

For the guides, there are two barcodes on the back and you have to cover up the little one to get the big one, the one in the system, to scan and tell you the real price. ^_^
Ok just looking at this, it realy does look like alot more then 100 stores are closing, what the hell is going on?
TRU has run on hard times with the megaretailers like Walmart and Best Buy becoming bigger and bigger. Based on what I saw this holiday season, it looks like they'll survive, but they just need to downsize. Sorry to anyone involved in this, I hope you're all able to get new work soon.

Ah ok, i will try that with the guides the next time i am in TRU and i will report back, i am sure no one is buying all those old guides our location has sitting on the shelves. The funny thing is though i was able to get the newer guides to scan no problem and come up with a price but no go on the older ones.

The only problem i can see with this is the guides do have stickers on them with the real price, like 14.99 so i dont know if they would take the register price or the sticker price and just mark it 20% off.

UPDATE! Discount increasing tommorow!

Games-20% off
Accessories 40% off
Guides 30% off.

According to who I got this from, it should increase weekly or so until the store closes.

Nice... I think I'll pick some stuff up like Fatal Frame 3 when it's 30 or 40% off.

Any games TRU carries that either won't get a price drop, are kind of unique, or really no other retailer carries?

Most DS and PSP games. I don't see most of those games dropping, and its the only reason I'm keeping an eye on this clearance (and potentially a 360 wired controller for PC).

Video game wise? Not that I know of...which means either no or at the very least, they have some crappy TRU only game. But as for games that won't drop in price, I can't see why one would not be effected by the clearance.

That would go with the system discount I was tipped off on. But, then again, you would think a store would go into tomorrow (er today now, heh) with the posters reflecting the change. I closed tonight and we neither changed or added any signs, so guess we'll see tomorrow.

Just incase though, as I said before based on what info I was given, price drops should be based solely on the liqudator company that owns the merch, not TRU, so universal discount changes seem high unlikely, since it doesn't appear that one giant liquidator copy took all the stores over. But I don't know anything about liquidators, so who knows. Still, YMMV just to be safe. ^_^

Just wanted to add that the Federal Way, WA Toys R US will be closing as I saw people on the corner of streets with signs stating this was so.

Tyson's Corner, VA was at 20% games, and 40% off accessories Sunday. I think they had a sign up saying 10% off Nintendo, Sony, and MS systems as well. They had a pretty healthy selection of Xbox360 games if you want them 20% off - they qualify for sure as they had signs showing what the discount would be ($47.99 for the $59.99 ones).

They also have a good selection of DS games (just about everything but AC and Phoenix Wright), but the regular console games are pretty thin right now. And not much in the way of $10 clearance games - just stuff like DBZ Sagas, Bloodrayne 2, etc. They do, however, have about 100 copies of that GBA Poker game for $8 :D. I'm sure you can wait until the clearance goes to a much higher percentage and still get that one. They mark the back of the game with a black pen so you can't return - but at least on top of the shrinkwrap, none of this opening up games and marking the cases crap I've heard about.
Also, anyone know what the discounts are like on other types of items in TRU?
It seemed that most everything else was at 20% today. The sign says "Up to 40%" but not much, except for video game accessories, was actually 40%.

And Roufuss - the only game I'm aware of that only TRU carries is the Dora the Explorer game for PS2 and GC. I got one for my 3 year old back during the GT glitch. It's an OK game for very young kids, but I'd say even he is too advanced for it as he regularly plays WarioWare, SSBM, and the Mario Party games. But he has put a few hours into it so it was worth it for what I paid (about $10). It is pretty much like a cheap kids PC game though in terms of graphics and gameplay.

I'm hoping that there's a DQ8 and Shadow of Colossus left when the games hit 40-50% off. Maybe afew wavebirds too.

I highly doubt it. Mine is only at 20% and they have very little left. However i managed to pick up transformers for ps2 and dbz sagas for 8$ each. as crappy as they may be, I couldnt pass them up at that price.

The Duluth, MN Tru is at 20% 40% just went there today and picked up the last copy of FFIV for GBA and Advance Wars DS. Been going there every few days and they actually have gotten more new stock in everytime.

Most if not all of the toys were 10% so now they will be 20% off, the only things that were really discounted more than that were holiday items.

Its gonna have to go A LOT cheaper for them to clean out the stores totally cause there is so much merchandise in our store, we have merchandise piled to the celing here.

any news on the Westport or Norwalk Toys R Us in Connecticut. if anybody has any info on Connecticut stores plz PM or AIM me at td51889.

For those who have purchased games, is it true that the games are being opened and marked out over the UPC?

Permanent marker marked over UPC over the plastic. Can probably use nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol to clean it up. If they open the item, just say NO DEAL.
For those who have purchased games, is it true that the games are being opened and marked out over the UPC?
Not at the Tyson's Corner, VA store - as I said above. They simply used a permanent black marker to cross out the UPC, but on top of the shrinkwrap.

20% still isn't a good deal, since I can get that right now with the $10 Best Buy coupon... sad to see that they probably won't have anything at 40 - 50% off.

You can also use goo gone (alcohol or nail polish remover works better) to get off the permanent market, its kind of stupid that they do that since you can get the marker off most packages anyways.

Oh yeah dont use nail polish remover since it might damage the shrinkwrap on games since its acetone, alcohol would probably be your best bet.

Yeah, I don't really get it either since the receipts indicate no returns anyway. And like you said, you can get it off anyway - so why do they go through the effort...
For those who have purchased games, is it true that the games are being opened and marked out over the UPC?
Yeah, they did that to me...I wasn't very happy about it, but all I got was Geist and Baten Kaitos (w/ soundtrack) for $10 (less 20%), so I figure if I see some very cheap games later on that I would normally pass on (I have standards, even for cheap games), I'll just buy them and use their cases (unfortunately, BK is a 2-disc game, which certainly complicates things). It really doesn't look that bad, though, and I rarely ever sell my games, so I'm not at all concerned with the resale value.

BTW, the TRU in SW Plaza, Denver, CO, is also closing, which sucks a lot...so many good deals on games...

I don't know about you guys, but my store is just being pilaged. The GP is going nuts on 20%. Oh well, at least I scored on 40% off accessories with 5 Wavebirds (3 for myself, 2 for a friend) and one of each Xbox and Xbox 360 12 month Live kits.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing at Tyson's Corner, VA. Never saw so many people buying games in an RZone before. It was a big "meh" for me, being accustomed to getting games so much cheaper than 20% off :D. People were all excited to get Harry Potter games for $16.

Hey first message here on CAG...Thought I'd finally give something back to the community.

For all you Los Angeles area CAGs there is roughly 40-50 copies of Baten Kaitos with soundtrack available at the Signal Hill (Long Beach) location. Each copy is greentagged at $9.99 with the additional 20% off. Nothing else worth getting excited over though.

I've been spending way too much money at TRU the last couple of month $250 on $10 games, big game cube memory card $20 and Xbox Universal remote $20 after 30% off. I went back today and pickup a wavebird for $20 and 12 month of xbox live for $30 does anyone know if you can use the older xbox live card directly on a 360 or will I have to use my old xbox to activate the card. I figure I'll wait a little longer to see if the price drop a bit more before I make anymore purchases.

thanks
