Last Thursday, my buddy went out of town. He gave me a last-minute phone call and asked me to watch his dog. He's 18 and lives with his parents...keep that in mind. I agreed to do it for $100 (had to do it through tonight). I just had to go over to his house and let their dog out a few times a day, and make sure he had food.

Everything went smoothly until yesterday. Sunday morning I gave him some food. The 2nd and 3rd trips I made over there during the day, the food still sat in the tray. I thought this was strange. Dogs normally eat away, oblivious to what their stomach tells them.

This morning I went in there, and the food still sat there. I threw it out and gave him a new, fresh bowl of the stuff he eats. He still didn't touch it. On my second trip there today, I was once again greeted with the untouched bowl of food. I was getting to get a bit worried. Perhaps, I thought, this dog was lonesome for his family that he loved so much and all but lost his appetite? Maybe this wasn't the case...I saw the dog make a break for the room of the parents of my buddy. I followed. On the floor lay a box of doggy treats. Milkbone ones. Anyway, the box appeared to be chewed open. It had one of those "pull here to open" tabs, and that was still intact. The box was half-empty.

Now I don't know what to do. I wasn't supposed to let the dog in that room...I'm not sure if I left the door open, or if he pawed his way in. (I was looking around their whole house, as I hadn't been there in a while. Not really snooping, just taking a "tour," I guess you could say.)

Do I:
a) Take the half-empty box of treats with me and never mention it?
- Probably my best bet, but they'd get suspicious, you'd think, if they find it missing; then again, it's not like people keep tabs on boxes of dog treats...

b) Tell them what happened...
- I'm honestly not sure what happened, but I'm afraid my carelessness (of not shutting the door) may be at fault.

c) Buy a new box of treats?
- This is also a good plan, but: 1) I don't know if the treats were originally elevated somewhere, and, 2) what if they did open it themselves, and they come home to a box of treats that magically re-sealed itself?

d) Put the opened box back on the floor where I saw the dog digging?
- It could've just been sitting there...and maybe that's why they didn't want the dog in there...but then, why would you store it there in the first place if you're worried about him getting into it?

I should mention the dog is an old (like 10 years) Beagle, so it's not the most athletic dog in the world. That's why I doubt she knocked anything of a shelf/dresser.

Thanks! Maybe I'm overreacting. Just wondering what you guys would do...

Just tell them what happened. There's no reason for them to get pissed - it happened when you weren't there. They should know though in case there is some medical related issue that you haven't thought of that might come up. It's still odd that the dog wouldn't eat and even odder than he left 1/2 of the treats uneaten. Every dog I know eats everything in sight no matter what it is and doesn't stop until it is gone.

have you read the box of the treats if there are any side effects if a dog eats to many treats? I say you should do B and C

I would buy a new box. You said it was unopened, and maybe if you buy two, you could put the two together on a kitchen counter, kind of like a welcome home gift. That would cover for not knowing where the original boxes went.

Well if your friend is 18 he probably has a cell phone. I'd give him a call and let him know what's going on here. It's possible the dog has done this before... regardless it's best they know what's going on here, ya know in case this causes any problems. I doubt it will, since a few milk bones aren't going to kill most dogs.

Anywho, worst case scenario they just ask you not to watch their dog anymore. They'll trust you a whole lot less if you try to cover it up and they find out themselves.

I'd say you don't know how the dog got in the room, perhaps they didn't shut it all the way themselves, and go from there...

Tell them what happened and use some of your money to buy a new box of treats.

Just be glad it wasn't chocolate that it got into.

Just tell'em what happened and they can probably take the money for more milkbones out of your rediculously high payment of $100. I mean c'mon you were watching a dog for a weekend, unless the thing is some kind of giant rabid beast you should've probably just do it as a favor to your friend anyhow. I don't mean to sound like a jackass on a wild rant but if one of my friends asked for $100 for a simple favor like this I'd laugh in their face, but I guess your buddy has a lot of money to burn.

Hmm do you make up some lie to cover your ass and let the dog possibly suffer through it as long as you dont get caught?

Or do you tell them what happened and/or call a vet and ask if there is anything you should do to alleviate the dog's obvious strangeness toward its food?

Jeez thats a tough one.......

I'd give you an eye roll if i knew how to do it :(

Theres a reason they are treats and not a normal daily food for dogs. Too much of them and it will get sick.

Tell them the truth , but if you must, leave out the part where you went snooping in their room and let them come to the conclusion that the dog managed to open it himself, or put the seed of doubt in their minds that they may not have closed the door completely before they left.

Always fess up with friends. It will make you feel better, and in the long run it will help your friendship. My friends that admit mistakes are my friends for life; I know I can trust and depend on them.

Everyone makes mistakes. Just be apologetic for it. Offer to take $75 instead of a $100...

The truth will set you free...

Erm...yeah, it was a great deal. He called me like an hour before they left, and this is was the basis of our conversation:

Him: Wanna make $100 bucks?
Me: Huh? How?
Him: Let my dog in and out a few times a day while we're gone.
Me: Oh...ok, sure.

That was more of less the jist of our conversation. For what it's worth, his parents were the ones that gave me the money. And for even more what it's worth, his parents have a son who's an NFL quarterback. And for even more what it's worth, they went out of town to go to that son's wedding. Not that I'm hinting at anything...just saying, "for what it's worth."

I'd give up the ass to get some of HIS cash.

(Assuming your a girl, since most guys barely know what a "winnie the poo" is.)

For real, he's a football star... and I'm sure you're no prize if you weekend consists of taking the next door neighbor's dog out. Watch some porn movies, do EVERYTHING you see there.... from "The Anal" to the "Hat Trick"... and make sure you swallow.

Now get to work....

All good advice. I wouldn't worry, if dogs miss their owners then they do have a tendency to stop eating. If your friend is coming back soon there will be no problem. Even if he isn't I don't think the dog is sick and/or will starve to death.

Just tell him the truth. As Zenith mentioned above, don't they have a cell phone/didn't they give you a contact number? I'd just call and let them know the situation and see what they want to do...

Ah I see, I just figured you asked him for the money. But I guess in this case, you should've held out for $200

She did seem more lonesome over anything else. Even when I tried to give her attention (rub her belly and sit over there with her for 10-15 minutes each of the three times I went over there...not a lot, but still, some), she just seemed to miss her owners.

Well, they came back already, anyway. I just took the treats and didn't say anything. If they call and let me know that something is wrong, I'll tell them what happened. My gut instinct tells me she's fine, though. My dog has been through the same thing and was fine. I'm not trying to cover my ass necessarily, it's just that I don't think it's anything to get worked up over...which makes me wonder why I made this topic. @_@

Thanks for the advice, guys! Although I didn't really heed what everyone else suggested, it was nice putting things in prespective. It calmed me down.

Tell them the truth. If they have a head they know that dogs do all sorts of things. When left alone its no ones fault. The reason the dog is not eating is he misses his owners. Dogs fell they are apart of the family when you get a dog you become there new pack they run with. He is not eating because his owners are not there that's all. It's not a big deal dogs just do it. Also offer to buy a new box of treats.

Don't bother with a new box of treats. The dog was going to get to eat them all eventually. And I've never seen a dog get sick from eating too many milkbones, I don't think it's possible. Just clean up the mess and tell them what happened when they get home. No need to bother them while they're on vacation with something this trivial. Seriously, it's trivial. Most dogs are strange when it comes to food. My dog won't eat anything for the first 3 days at the kennel when we're on vacation, but after that he gets hungry enough and starts to eat again. Yeah, he misses his family, but he's a freaking dog and he'll get over it. Just hope he doesn't take a big smeary shit all over the livingroom carpet to spite you for taking away his milkbones.
give them the truth..a dog eating a lot of treats isn't a big deal
Hey ryanbph, is that dog in your avatar a shiba or an akita?

A bunch of dog treats isn't going to hurt... the proper course would have been to just tell them and buy a new box o' treats. I doubt they'd even care- any dog (even an old one) can sneak treats if left alone long enough.

Actually, the worst advice I saw here was to make the dog bacon- most meats we eat are too rich for dogs to digest properly. The occasional treat is fine, but consistent meals of such food will mess up the dog's insides, eventually killing it. My sister got to break that news to a lil' old lady who fed her dog ribmeat. He got sick and had to be put down.

This is a nothing-problem... I've had friends pets die on me while I was taking care of them... and I didn't even have a contact number! Now THAT sucks...
