A little backstory, I grew up a PC gamer, when friends had Atari 2600, I had a TI-99/4A, then a Commodore 128 and on into PCs (sorry, not an Apple fan either).
I played games on consoles, in college several friends had SNES, played lots of NHL 94 etc. and then some PS1 (very little actually).
I had never experienced the "wow" factor that was console gaming until NFL2K on the Dreamcast (first console I purchased in the "launch window"). I avoided the PS2 and didn't get my Xbox until June of 2004. (Followed soon after by a GC, mainly for my son)
Thanks to deals on CAG (last year's CC $5 games, and primarily Gamerush since) I have been able to purchase every game that I wanted for Xbox. Do to my limited gaming time, having two kids, most of the games I purchased never saw more than 30 minutes of my time. The turnover has been tremendous, if I don't get hooked immediately, it is traded back to GR before the value drops below the $30 I paid for. I don't have time to waste trying to enjoy a game. Other than sports games, the only game I have spent much time with is Halo 2 (although I have had it for nearly a year, I have yet to play the single player game). I have a group of friends that I play with online a couple times a week.
Most recently I have gotten Shattered Union, Spartan Total Warrior, Battlefield 2, and Battlefront 2. All but Battlefield 2 are going back to GR (feel free to make an offer if you are interested in any of the other three
)
(I will bold the rest as it is really all anyone probably wants to read)
I preorderd and paid for my 360 as soon as my GR allowed, in fact I was first on the list. I have been reading a ton of negativity lately regarding the actual in-game graphics at the kiosks. Most I took with a grain of salt as several excuses were made (being just "demos" or the kiosks were set up incorrectly). I happened to be in my local Wal-Mart today, and low and behold, there it was. For some reason the puzzle game was the one on the screen, which would explain why it wasn't being used. I had my 4 and 1 year olds with me so I new my time was limited.
I played COD2, since I have it preordered, for all of two minutes (that is how long I lasted before I died, I was too busy checking out the graphics) then let some kid play. That was all it took. I got the same rush that I got the first time I saw NFL2K. It erased any doubt I might have had about keeping the 360.
The only game that I have for comparison's sake is Battlefield 2. BF2 is a 3rd/4th generation Xbox game (not sure really what constitutes a generation, but it has been nearly 4 years since Halo arrived). The graphics are typical of what we can expect from a combat heavy FPS, it is not the best on the Xbox, but far from the worst.
COD2 blows it away, hands down. If this is what we can expect from a 1st generation launch title, I can't wait so see what is available in a year, let alone 4 years from now. I'll take "ports" like this any day of the week.
Some of you may have had bad "setups" at the kiosks that you checked out, and others just may be expecting way too much. Here is a little test for you, go drop Ghost Recon in your Xbox (My first Xbox game was Ghost Recon
) Now drop in Far Cry or SC:CT...notice a difference? That is what experience/time does for programmers. (Wasn't Ghost Recon a "port" as well? Imagine what the COD2 developers will be able to do in a few years)
