Igarashi working on another Castlevania for DS

Well here’s some big news coming out of the GC! Koji Igarashi confirmed during an interview that he will be focusing on a brand new DS Castlevania after the upcoming PSP remake hits store shelves. No details on the title just yet, but hopefully we will hear something soon.

I'm looking forward to the PSP remake as well as this! Good stuff.

Day one purchase for me.

I hope they keep/expand upon the dual character system from PoR. Maybe even have 2 or 3 other characters that you can call upon for help.

*yawn*

no, seriously. castletroid is officially stale, imho. hoping this one is spiced up somehow.

I'll but it eventually, won't be a day 1, but I atleast know it will be worth almost any amount of money I spend on it. I'm more looking forward to the psp remake coming out this fall to be more honest.

Even though I'm a bit stale on the Metroidvania games after playing 5 of them in recent years (3 GBA, 2 DS games) I'll be their day 1.

One of my all time favorite game series. I also hope they keep the multiple character system, and something like the portraits as it was nice having more variety in the levels since painting could go to odd places that wouldn't make sense inside of the castle.

No one cares about your opinion, biotch.

fix'd.

lawl, as if. Silly Apossum ;)

But yeah, Castlevania is one of my favorite series of all time, if not my absolute favorite, yet, I'm getting tired of seeing the same game rehashed over and over. Portrait of Ruin was really good IMO, but definitely the worst Metroidvania yet and it made it clear that the series needs to try something new. Konami isn't going to best SOTN (though DoS came close), so I'd like to see them use a different approach, though I don't know what that approach could be...

Well, either way, I'm buying this. Castlevania games are consistently great, so even if this is another rehash, it'll still be damn fun.

edit: I haven't been able to commit to playing a game in a month now... but I just realized, I wanna play DoS again.

I didn't get why people thought PoR was kind of bad...it just seems like more of the same but with character switching.

anyway, if they add a third guy, that would make me buy it again. a guy named....steve. Charlotte, Jonathan.....and Steve. and every time you choose him it'll take a second and go "....and Steve" in a slow skeptical voice.

YES!!!!

It's too bad I have been stuck on PoR for months now that I gave up on it. I am stuck on the battle with Richter. No matter what I can't beat the fucker.

Two things:

1) When you put "Steve," I heard that name pronounced to me in a slow skeptical voice automatically even before I read that part of your post. It's a little scary, and I'm not sure I like it.

2) The problem with PoR is that the environments weren't anywhere near as interesting as in past outings, the music wasn't even close to as good as what DoS had, and the levels were basically flipped upside down to make the second half of the game... now before you say that SOTN also did that, SOTN also had a much bigger, more interesting castle to explore (at least, I think so.) I also kinda missed the soul system from DoS. And PoR just wasn't very dark... it didn't feel like Castlevania without all the gothic scenery we're used to. The devs were trying to give the game more variety I guess, but I like my dark, gothic castles and transexual heroes.
I will certainly look forward for more info. Good 2D gaming is about the norm every year and everywhere.
fixed. period.

I would rather see a new Castlevania on the big consoles focus on the War of 1999 than another DS Castlevania. But whatever, I always felt like the Soma games were a triology and I hope this finishes that saga.

I agree, except for the music. I thought POR had some of the jamminest tunes yet, thanks to the Yuzo / Yamane combo.
As far as boring stage design, I think DOS was kind of lame as well. Even though the backgrounds looked cool, pretty much every section of the castle was symmetrical.

Glad they took a year off, because this would've been the 'snapping point' for me had they not. And this coming from a guy whose favorite console game ever is Symphony of the Night.

Why they can't make an original 2D entry for one of the consoles, or even the PS2/PSP combo deal, is beyond me.

Go level up more and buy crap.

it's so lame that you beat him with a pie - it's fuckin Richter for christ sakes.

and oh yah, i'm totally burnt out on Castleroid - though i'd prefer a new 2d metroid over a 2d castlevania.

hahahahhahahahaha!

what kind of hip hop name is steve!? ...steve...

I liked Symphony of the Night a lot, and I skipped the rest and played Portrait of Ruin which I also liked very much, but when I went back and tried to play DoS, I just didn't have any fun. The games are sooo identical.

There are definitely things that they can do to spice the series up, but they just aren't doing them. It would be nice to see a game like Simon's Quest, the original Metroidvania, which had expansive outdoor environments, cities, NPCs, and all that. Symphony of the Night was grand, but I think the best thing Castlevania could use is more diversity in terms of setting. Portrait of Ruin, with its different portrait levels, was a step in the right direction. They squandered a brilliant chance at post-modernism, but it's not like this is indie game design and they are free to do that sort of thing.

We could also use more evolution to the overall interaction with the game. Symphony of the Night made Castlevania awesome by adding a status screen with equipment and various special abilities like double-jump, morphing, flying, magic, and various acrobatics, not to mention numerous weapon classes. All of the proceeding games have had the same featureset, though, and we haven't seen the same sort of epic leap in interaction that SotN was over Castlevania X or whatever came before it. Portrait of Ruin really dropped the ball again here, where they neglected to have a lot of awesome two-person puzzles -- they could have made the castle more like Lost Vikings or something!

I would like to be a Castlevania fan, but I can't take so much of the exact same!
