anybody recommend any good dvds for a good price? most of my movies are about 7 gigabytes. so i do'nt know if i need to compress it or go through some process to fit the movie on the dvd.

thanks guys

Blank dvds are pretty common nowadays. When it comes to quality DVD Rs, you want to steer towards Verbatim branded discs. While they are a bit more expensive, they are also the highest quality available.

As for compression, there are a number of ways to go about it. You could use a program like DVD Shrink or a number of other useful compression programs.

Another option is to go for a dual-layer DVD burner with dual layer blank media and just copy your movies without any compression.

Office Max regularly has 50 pack Verbatim DVD-Rs on sale for $14.99, 100 pack CDs for same brand also $14.99. Dual Layer option is pretty cheap as well but I'd recommend ordering onlin. If your current drive can't do DL, you can get a external burner for around $50.

I love my Memorex. They get the job done real nice and easy, at a real good quality, and they're usually at a great price. I just picked up a 50 pack on sale for $13. Never had a coaster.

as for compression would i lose any quality in the movies? i'm still trying to decide to go with double layer or just compress it to a 4.5 gig blank dvd

If your files are that big I'd say its a retail DVD rip, that around where they run and you would need dual-layer for that. If its a .avi file or something of the sort there are programs to convert it into a format to play on a DVD player, in which case it should run around a 4.1gb ISO. You can't just put a video file on a blank disc and expect it to play, you need to convert it into a proper DVD format of some sort of disc image. If your looking at copying entire retail DVDs *cough pirate...* then you'd need Dual Layer discs, they cost more but get the job done and you wouldn't have to cut anything out then.

Taiyo Yuden Premium > Everything. They're not expensive, either.

Of course, a DVD5 is not comparable to DVD9 film.

I use dvdshrink and fit movies onto single layer disks and they look virtually identical at about 60% quality.

If you're looking for some cheap blank media I do have two 100 packs of Philips DVD-Rs for $20 shipped each I could sell you. I also have a bunch of 3 packs of Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layered disks for sale for $6 each.

i'm trying to see what online retailers have them for cheap because i have a 30 dollar credit for Amazon and i have a 20 credit for J and R. also staples has cheaps dvd/cd'rs

I found some Sony DVD-Rs that were rebranded Taiyo Yuden DVDs awhile back at Staples. If you see an octagonal spacer on top of the spindle, they're probably rebranded Taiyo Yudens!

Taiyo Yuden are the best. Period. The problem with TY are that there are so many places selling knock offs, it's easier just buy Verbatims. I even hear they use re-baged TY.

Here's another vote for TY. I ordered mine from supermediastore.com, they have the 8x premium DVD-Rs for $32.99/100pk w/ free shipping. I've backed up a lot of cartoon seasons so that the wee one doesn't have to touch the originals and I now loan out a backup instead of the original disc because some people just aren't careful. If you don't care about special features you can use DVD Shrink and just burn the main movie with all special features, commentaries, and extra languages removed... a lot of shorter (hour and a halfish) movies will fit on a regular dvd-r with little or no compression. TV seasons on the other hand, will not. DVD Shrink is a great - and free - program... a nice guide here - http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm.
