I need to get a textbook by about mid-late next week and it would be shipped by medial mail from California being delivered to me here in California. Approximately how long would it take to arrive? (man that sounds like some math word problem)

EDIT: How much would the time vary if it wasn't being shipped from California?

Media Mail is a total crap shoot. I've seen it take 2 or 3 days and I've seen it take as long as a month.

Yeah, go with the expedited, I sent out a textbook to somebody on half.com with media mail and from VA to NY it's been almost a month and I got an email saying he hadn't gotten it. I hope it's not lost in the mail...I think the postal employees are trained to not give a shit about media mail packages, which is why they stamp them 300 times with "media mail" so nobody goes out of their way to actually deliver them.

There was a post about this a while back. Apparently anything labeled Media Mail or Parcel Post is fair game for the postal employees to main, break, destroy, or use in the Post Office Games, such as "Chuck the package at bob" and "Backroom Frisbee Challenge."

Okay so I made those two names up, but they do play games with packages. :)
